About the Author
Dr. Roberta Alexander is Professor Emeritus at San Diego City College. She has taught Reading, Composition, Literature, Chicano Studies, and Black Studies as well as English as a Second Language courses for the San Diego Community College District since 1974. Formerly the Department Chair of English, Chair of Chairs, and Academic Senate President, she now focuses on teaching and writing. She is the author of a series of college reading textbooks. Dr. Alexander earned her BA in Spanish Literature from University of California, Berkeley and her PhD in Comparative Literature from University of California, San Diego.

Jan Jarrell is the ESOL coordinator at San Diego City College. She has taught English as a Second Language, Reading, and Composition courses in both the credit and noncredit divisions of the San Diego City College District since 1989. She has held a number of leadership positions including Department Chair and Interim Associate Dean in the noncredit division, and Basic Skills Coordinator.

Wrong text book

I ordered this text book for my daughter and received the instructors edition which contains all the answers.....she can not bring this book to class fearing that her professor will think she is cheating.....I've emailed the seller and asked for the student edition to be sent to me. I am waiting for a reply

Excellent Text For College

A Community of Readers - A Thematic Approach To Reading by
Roberta Alexander and Jan Jarrell is an excellent book which
covers the dynamics of critical reading for college. The authors
describe reading as a process which consists of reflection, the
need to know or discriminate, the use of a dictionary, main ideas,
evidence, inferences and plenty of exercises demonstrating critical
thinking.

The authors provide a very extensive tool kit which includes visual
aids, how to take class notes, test taking, writing tips, navigating
websites, reading circles of students and sample book projects.
This section is extremely valuable because it deals with facilitating
learning transfer for college students. This version does not have an
answer key although there is an instructor's manual available from
the publisher as there is with most texts.

The authors present a very extensive section on how to use a
dictionary. In addition, the text points out the necessity of
utilizing the glossary for texts frequently. There is an area
which is not emphasized by the authors. That is, English literature
often contains advanced vocabulary not listed in the back of the
book. In those instances, students must refer back and forth to a
standard dictionary.

The easy way around this is to peruse the book, extract the advanced
vocabulary and research meanings in the dictionary prior to actually
reading the book. These steps will assist in enhancing your vocabulary.
Too often, students just gloss over unknown words and lose the meaning
intended by the author. In addition, students should research all unfamiliar
vocabulary as preparation for exams like the SAT, GRE and entrance exams
in professions like law or medicine.

The authors provide at least six pages of suggested readings, as well
as illustrative websites . The suggested readings are aimed at developing
skills for potential student projects and other advanced work in college.
In addition, the authors provide a considerable section on applying what
you read in small group discussions and forums.

A Community of Readers - A Thematic Approach To Reading by Roberta
Alexander and Jan Jarrell is an important work for developing reading
skills with a view toward college applications in a variety of
important settings.This work can be helpful because department
chairpeople are getting away from course grades based solely on
examinations. Currently, there is a move toward having students develop
work products which reflect critical analysis, class participation,
field work, small group participation and extensive data analysis
for subjects like econometrics.

Generally, publishers do not sell instructor manuals to students. An
instructor's manual has the words "Instructor's Manual" in bold print
on the face. If a book does not have this insignia on the face, it's
intended for students. In addition, teachers provide the ISBN number
which is the governing disclosure on the book they intend to use.
Lastly, the publisher has just come out with the 6th Edition. Very
often, publishers do make minor changes to books even within the same
addition to take into consideration comments by buyers.

Beyond Pathology

I have a veritable library of books on the Enneagram. I have many books by Don Richard Riso and Helen Palmer. If you wish to have an overview of the Enneagram types and their attributes, or if you want to try typing your friends, family and work mates so that you can understand how to get along with them, their books are really good. But there is one glaring difficulty when it comes to typing yourself: their books seem to focus mainly on what is wrong or unhealthy in each type. I am at what Don Richard Riso calls "Level 1" of my type, basically the healthiest edge of the spectrum, and I could not figure out what type I was until I read this book. Instead of just going for the negative fixations, What's My Type? describes nuances, such as how the different types focus their energy into activities, things that frustrate or upset them and other relatively neutral traits. Attributes are stated in terms that you can identify with without seeming unhealthy or defective. And when it comes to the types outside of your own, each is written about in a descriptive way that helps you understand what it's like to look at the world through their lenses, both facilitating compassion and broadening your own perspective to include each type's unique value system. It does a beautiful job of exploring what can really take each personality to its highest spiritual level, rather than merely attaining psychological health. I highly recommend going on to read "My Best Self" by the same authors after you read this. It builds brilliantly and insightfully on the foundation laid by this book.

Nine Personalities Categorized by Their Basic Flaw

Kathleen V. Hurley & Theodore E. Dobson's book, "What's My Type?" offers the clearest method for understanding which of the nine of the Enneagram's personality types you actually have.

Each of the nine points on the Enneagram correspond to a numbered personality type.

Each of these nine personality types is characterized by its own unique major personality flaw. These personality types are:

1.) anger
2.) pride
3.) deceit
4.) jealousy
5.) greed
6.) fear
7.) gluttony
8.) lust
9.) sloth

Whether we care to admit it or not, we know ourselves very well. It's very hard to deny the obvious in our failings.

But don't despair that this way of viewing personality is too "negative"! It's actually a great first step toward getting to know yourself better. The clarity of Kathleen V. Hurley's & Theodore E. Dobson's method gives you a very solid, very practical understanding what you need to do to improve yourself.

Essentially, the underlying differences in the characteristics of the nine enneagram personality types are a matter of how the personality types use instinct, emotion, and thought to arrive at the sort of decisions that are typical for each of the nine personality types. ("Instinct" is knowing without knowing how you know. The authors provide this very useful description of instinct in their book.)

Of their two books on the enneagram I've read, "What's My Type?" (the first book) is better than "My Best Self." But both are useful.

For example, the second book provides a description of the 3rd personality type (whose major character flaw is deceit) that seeks to offer improvements upon the one of the first book. But at the same time their second book adds unnecessary theoretical complexity to the authors' evolving overview of what causes each personality type to have a different set of characteristics.

The 3rd personality type can be highly, intensely emotional but may forfeit emotion, including love, in pursuit of "success." In their second book, though, the authors argue that the 3rd personality type feels all emotions strongly except love (in my reading of their book). They complicate the enneagram chart by describing the 3rd personality as being sub-dividable into two groups: one sub-group that leans toward the intellect as a secondary mental faculty & the other that leans toward intuition. Their first book, "What's My Type?," avoids such theoretical entanglements.

Wonderful Book for Learning the Enneagram

This was the first Enneagram book I read. It was the most excellant in terms of describing the way the system works. The authors use layman words and spiritual references in ways that make you truly come to understand the sometimes wonderful and sometimes lacking personalities that make us who we are.

A must for any fan of the Zero

This is a very informative and helpful book for the beginning modeler and especially the advanced modeler,who wants to take their skills up a notch or two. I enjoyed seeing some actual photos of real Zeros that are being refurbished as empirical reference. With each model, Mr. Criner provides a recipe of exactly what paints (color codes), and after market accessories were used. It was fun seeing him review kits of the Zero in all the available scales from the big 1/32 down to the tiny 1/144. His steps and clear techniques take a lot of the mystery out of getting a beautiful accurate model. As a bonus, Mr. Criner provides a glossy page of colored swatches used for all his builds. You can cut this out and keep it on your workbench as a quick reference. My only complaint would be the rather small size pictures as many of them are "scaled photos". I wish all or most were blown up to around 4x6 for those of us who need reading glasses. Otherwise, I can highly recommend this book if you are interested in modeling the Zero.

Phillipa a lil 12 yr old girl goes to heaven again (this is her second book) where she is given many end time revelations. Jesus comes to this child and takes her to heaven he shows her mansion and things he has prepared for the saints, things such as are favorite foods, anything we desire like different colors or having your house painted gold. Her mansion and the way she describes it is a dream you would have to get the book and see for urself. There are special gifts waiting and he lavious this little girl because of her dedication to him and sharing the gospel and spreading the divine end time revelations. There are many surprises, fine things beyond ure imagination and the way she describes the joy and love and peace and her enthusium. Most of all she expresses how much Jesus loves us.

You guys Jesus is handsome she says he is beyond compare I always wonder how he looked which was conforting altho if he wasnt handsome it wouldnt mean I wouldnt love him because, he died for us but it was just something interesting to know. He is so loving and really delicate and sweet towards her I see why the mysterious are hidden from un child like people. There are animals up there and they talk and that heaven is so wonderful that even the animals said to do the best you can to make it up there and Phillipa said even the floor in heaven is better to be on than on the earth! I was like wow it is making me wish to be just even on the ground in heaven let alone just being with Jesus. The way she goes to heaven in chariots, by angles and how the angles are always surrounded by her and the love Jesus has.. The food is prepared for us the way we want it in our heavenly refridgator shows how close it is for the coming rapture. Also you get a laptop up there and will be able to chat, it just makes me wonder what else all is up there and how gracious God is. Its a must read

Great ideas

I teach 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade science. I had the opportunity to see Rick Smith at a workshop, and I was aboslutely blown away by the amount of ready-to-use ideas he provided. Although the workshop was mainly focused on his material in Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (also an awesome book), Smith brought up ideas from Picture This!.

Picture This! provides ideas for implementing the use of "visual rubrics" in your class. Examples of ideas I borrowed- I let kids keep their textbooks in my classroom, and I was irritated that I had to fix the piles at least once a week. So, I followed Rick's advice and took a picture of books in messy piles; I photoshopeed the word "NO!" on it. I also took a picture of the textbooks stacked the way I wanted and photoshopped "YES!" on the photo. I hung the two pictures up side-by-side near the textbooks; within a day, all the books were stacked in neat piles because the kids easily understood what I wanted.

I also used a "Readiness to Learn" rubric. My 7th graders are loud and obnoxious- more so than any class of 7th grade I had before- and it was pointless to try and yell over them to be quiet. I had kids volunteer for pictures; the first picture was of chaos in the room, which I labeled as "5." I worked down the scale to "1," where everyone in the picture was ready to learn. This system was SO SLICK. If it got too loud in my room, I'd simply hold up the number on my figers that the kids were at. Once I was able to get down to a 1, I was able to continue.

There are SO many rubrics in this book that can be used. I think it would be the most useful to elementary teachers, but I found many uses (beyond those two things listd above) for my middle and high school kids.

There are many great examples of rubrics throughout the book, including a password to an online collection of rubrics & videos that you can use as desired. This is an amazing book that is incredibly useful- a picture is definitely worth a thousand words!!!

Very nice!

I started out my year with my Learning Strategies class with these pictures and something to discuss every day about them for the first week or two. They then added these pics to their folders after writing a description of each. I found this book very helpful with my ESE students and I can see where most teachers, esp. in ESE classes and the lower or middle grades, would find this book invaluable as well.
