A superb book on India's astrology by a contemporary author

I second everything reviewer Barbara Pijan has said about this book. It's a marvelous and accurate introduction to India's astrology. Recent books on India's astrology (now termed Jyotish or "Vedic") have inadvertently let modern western concepts slip into the text. This fault is not present in Valerie Roebuck's text.

Roebuck uses Mikhail Gorbachev as her example chart, which dates the book to the early 90s (first publication date 1992), and she uses the Fagan-Allen ayanamsa which has been superceded by India's Lahiri value. But this is a small imperfection in the book. The astrological principles in the text are stellar. It's very unfortunate that Roebuck's book is out of print. It's the first book I recommend to students who want to lean about India's astrology.

This book won't teach you how to read a horoscope, but it will give you a solid and true foundation in India's ancient form of astrology. An A++ and ACCURATE book in all respects!

Justin Paul is Associate Professor, Nagoya University of Commerce and Business, Japan, and faculty, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi. A PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai, he has taught international business at the Indian Institute of Management Indore, and has been a visiting faculty to several institutions in USA, UAE, China, Oman, and Mauritius. He has authored several books on business management. He is also consultant to several companies and governments.
Rajiv Aserkar is Professor, Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the S P Jain Centre of Management, Dubai. A PhD in Economics from Devi Ahilya University, Indore, he was formerly faculty, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dubai Campus, and International Institute of Foreign Trade and Research, Indore. Dr Aserkar has 20 years of industry experience with reputed companies. He has travelled extensively to Europe, South East Asia and Middle East for business development.

The Power of Gongs

I discovered the powerful, hypnotic and suprisingly varied sounds of the gong recently. I was hooked and bought one myself. Although much of gong playing is intuitive and naturally learned through experimentation, I wanted to learn all I could about this mysterious instrument. Information on how to play the gong and the spiritual aspects of the sound of the gong are difficult to find. This book is a wonderful introduction to all aspects of the gong and the yoga that is associated with it. The interesting history of the gong, its uses in Western and Eastern music, how to play it and the gongs effects on the body's energetic system are all discussed.

Includes information about caring for, transporting, and setting up the Gong. Basic playing strokes are also clearly described and pictured. OK, so I come to this book with a bit of a bias....I adore the gong! I always have and always will.
Still...my God...someone has written a book about all of those things I intuited about the gong but could not find the words for!
Yes, Mehtab's book covers all of the Beauty the gong has to share with us: relaxation, releasing, healing, astral traveling :), transformation and so much more, and is written in the voice of clarity and effortless humor that is so much Mehtab Benton.
I encourage all to read this book, refer to this book for the rest of your gonging journey and, most of all, to actually experience the Gong and its benefits with Mehtab if you are ever visiting the lovely Austin, Texas!
I give this book 5 stars, because it's one of those books that as a yoga teacher I will refer to for the rest of my life. It stands next to my copy of the Bhagavad Gita and Tantra: The Path of Ecstasy
by Georg Feuerstein.

Not enough practical application of knowledge.

It's got a lot of lawyer speak but not a lot of advice or specific case studies. I was hoping to read it and have some ideas how to structurally set up my film's financial setup but I'm not any closer to doing that. This book does a REAL good job of scaring away investors in films and pretty much says that if you're an investor, don't bother because every contract is set up so that the director and producer will always make money and there will never be any for the investors.

Denise Anderson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington, where she teaches a variety of courses including general microbiology, medical bacteriology laboratory, and medical mycology/parasitology laboratory. Equipped with a diverse educational background, including undergraduate work in nutrition and graduate work in food science and in microbiology, she first discovered a passion for teaching when she taught microbiology laboratory courses as part of her graduate training. Her enthusiastic teaching style, fueled by regular doses of Seattle’s famous coffee, receives high reviews by her students. Outside of academic life, Denise relaxes in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle, where she lives with her husband, Richard Moore, and dog, Dudley (neither of whom are well trained). When not planning lectures, grading papers, or writing textbook chapters, she can usually be found chatting with the neighbors, fighting the weeds in her garden, or enjoying a fermented beverage at the local pub.

Although no longer an active member of the author team, Eugene (Gene) Nester wrote the original version of the present text with Evans Roberts and Nancy Pearsall more than 30 years ago. That text, Microbiology: Molecules, Microbes and Man, pioneered the organ system approach to the study of infectious disease, and was developed specifically for allied health sciences. Gene did his undergraduate work at Cornell and received his Ph.D. in microbiology from Case Western University. He then did postdoctoral work in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University with Joshua Lederberg. Following that, he joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington, where he remains active as an emeritus member. His laboratory demonstrated that Agrobacterium transfers DNA into plant cells―the basis for the disease crown gall―a system of gene transfer that has become a cornerstone of plant biotechnology. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Australia Prize and the Cetus Prize in Biotechnology, and was elected to fellowship in the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the National Academy of Sciences in India.

Explains everything very well

Great text!! I am working through Microbiology through the University of New England, and the text has been fantastic at explaining everything I need to know. I purchased this through Lagertha, who was a great seller.

The material in this book is written exceptionally well and makes the subject matter easy to understand

Before taking Micro I was told it's a whole other language and it is a difficult course.The material in this book is written exceptionally well and makes the subject matter easy to understand. The only negative - the book arrived in fair condition. It's week two and some of the pages have already separated from the spine. Not pleased with that, considering I'm reading the book every day.

I rented this book last semester and it contained a lot of good information. It also broke down Microbiology in a way that made it easier to understand. I followed this book first instead of the notes my professor wrote down and usually did pretty good on the test.

Plato, the great philosopher of Athens, was born in 427 BCE. In early manhood an admirer of Socrates, he later founded the famous school of philosophy in the grove Academus. Much else recorded of his life is uncertain; that he left Athens for a time after Socrates' execution is probable; that later he went to Cyrene, Egypt, and Sicily is possible; that he was wealthy is likely; that he was critical of 'advanced' democracy is obvious. He lived to be 80 years old. Linguistic tests including those of computer science still try to establish the order of his extant philosophical dialogues, written in splendid prose and revealing Socrates' mind fused with Plato's thought.

In Laches, Charmides, and Lysis, Socrates and others discuss separate ethical conceptions. Protagoras, Ion, and Meno discuss whether righteousness can be taught. In Gorgias, Socrates is estranged from his city's thought, and his fate is impending. The Apology (not a dialogue), Crito, Euthyphro, and the unforgettable Phaedo relate the trial and death of Socrates and propound the immortality of the soul. In the famous Symposium and Phaedrus, written when Socrates was still alive, we find the origin and meaning of love. Cratylus discusses the nature of language. The great masterpiece in ten books, the Republic, concerns righteousness (and involves education, equality of the sexes, the structure of society, and abolition of slavery). Of the six so-called dialectical dialogues Euthydemus deals with philosophy; metaphysical Parmenides is about general concepts and absolute being; Theaetetus reasons about the theory of knowledge. Of its sequels, Sophist deals with not-being; Politicus with good and bad statesmanship and governments; Philebus with what is good. The Timaeus seeks the origin of the visible universe out of abstract geometrical elements. The unfinished Critias treats of lost Atlantis. Unfinished also is Plato's last work of the twelve books of Laws (Socrates is absent from it), a critical discussion of principles of law which Plato thought the Greeks might accept.

Plato's work Parmenides has been rated by some as a spoof, a less-than-serious work, a work filled with contradictions and errors. This it may well be, but it is also a fascinating account, an experiment in the art of the philosopher and discussion to prove a point.

In essence it attempts to prove the existence of a higher authority, One, which is over and above all else. At the same time it attempts to prove that the One does not exist, that it can neither be inside nor outside of anything else and that the non-existent exists simply because we have thought of it.

According to Marilio Ficino, who wrote many commentaries on Plato in the fifteenth century, the discussion is designed also as a teaching method for Socrates who, through the twists and turns of logic, should learn how to discuss, how to put his ideas across, how to advance in the philosophical arts. For the average reader, however, it is a complicated example of why philosophers can take any subject and twist it, according to their desires, in one direction or another to gain an answer to some problem which could make sense or, with more careful thought, makes no sense at all.

Parmenides manages to prove both the existence of the One, and its non-existence. He shows that what is inside something, what touches something else, is not inside anything and touches nothing else. What is outside and has no connection is closely connected whilst not being outside. In short, it is a play on logic which makes little sense, which throws the thinking mind in all directions, which has contradictory answers to absurd ideas. Which explains, perhaps, why Ficino and others used exactly these arguments, the recounting of the conversation through Plato, to justify the existence of God.

The layout in this edition, whilst following that of the original Greek, forces the reader to work through the arguments quickly. The two protagonists' comments and answers are contained within paragraphs without modern breaks, without any form of attribution to one speaker or the other. The speed of reading, unless one is capable of forcing a slower pace, makes the flawed logic of the whole hard to find, hard to consider. Regardless of this problematic, Parmenides is a discussion worth taking the time to work through, worth deep and considered thought, if only to see how complicated philosophy can be, and how easy it is to get lost in contradictions, falsehood and the entrapment of words.

THE WITCHES BREW !

What reader wouldn't like to visit the past? (with a return ticket of course) With this book, you are made aware of Past - raw isolation, candle light , no plumbing, open-fire cooking - the only communication by word of mouth or a rare letter. And on top of this, fear and dread ! And the undead seen abroad !
I became immersed in the life of 'The House' and of it's characters. Although the Prologue prepares you for fear, dread, revenge, Satanic superstitions - you only THINK you're prepared ! A beautifully written, dangerous, period story, (certainly comparable to Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn.) And all the more remarkable in that the story is based on actual events, and the author's research shines through, in the telling of this spine-chilling story ! Martina Devlin, Journalist and Author, leads us, gently but firmly into Fright-land !!

Surprisingly unputdownable for a story about witches

This is a gem. Not a book I would have ordinarily chosen but was amazed by how unputdownable it was. Martina Devlin just keeps getting better and better as a writer. This to me works as a part thriller, part timeless human story . I end up admiring the main character so much and empathising that I forget partly the witches part and that it's set hundreds of years ago. It's a story about life, hard challenges, the decency of human beings and the opposite. It's timeless. it s just a wonderful story and that's what life is about - this is one of them . Enjoy. Aileen

Very enjoyable

Really enjoyed this book, the story is engaging, all the more so as it's based on a true events. Mob mentality is well portrayed and the reader is carried along with events, all the while worried about what's going to happen next. Would definitely recommend this book to others.
