Friendly, honest advice to help you get what you want out of life

I came across this book at a time in my life when I was feeling discouraged about finding my way back to the person I was and believed myself to be after having two children, quitting my job to become a stay-at-home mom and being diagnosed with a chronic disease. I knew what changes I wanted to make, but where I currently was felt miles away from where I wanted to be. The “Do a Day” philosophy made me realize that the anxiety and doubt I felt was because I was trying to conquer too big of a goal at once. “Do a Day” encouraged me to focus on bite-sized goals and stringing together good decision after good decision and if I have a bad day or make a bad decision, all I have to do is make a good one to start moving forward again towards those goals. The real “ah-ha moment” I had is that reaching a goal is about consistency not about being perfect all the time. All of the author’s honest stories about himself and his own failures and successes really illustrated these takeaways, which gave them more meaning for me than someone just spouting advice. I appreciated the friendly tone of this book and the author’s genuine interest in helping others.

Taking the stress out of reaching your goal

Personal and professional goals often feel so daunting because we set such far off and lofty ambitions for ourselves. As great as it is to reach for the stars, it becomes stressful and demoralizing. For me, that stress takes over and distracts from the original purpose.

Reading Bryan's book is like chatting with an old friend and trusted mentor. He is a friend who is open, honest, and inspirational because he is authentically engaged in reaching the same lofty goals himself. I was blown away by Bryan's candor and willingness to share such challenging experiences in his life. It made me more willing and able to talk with myself and with those I love about my own personal and professional goals: I would like to healthily lose another 20lbs, I would like to improve my impact at work, I would like to limit myself to two drinks a week, and I would like to strive to be an even better loving husband.

Will I do all of these things perfectly tomorrow? Probably not. But thanks to Bryan's story, his honesty, and most importantly his Do a Day method, I feel equipped to Do the Day tomorrow successfully with his steps as my guide. And I will do it with a lot less stress knowing that if I don't do everything perfectly I can return to Bryan's book and his stories to find the inspiration and methods to Do a Day again the next day. An adaptable, inspiring approach to living a better life

This book is centered around a simple and powerful idea: a lifetime of success can't be achieved in a day, so don't approach it that way. Rather, focus on making each day a success. Likewise, a day's failure doesn't ruin the successful life you've been leading, so don't let it throw you off course. This is easier said than done, of course, but Falchuk guides the reader through techniques for implementing Do a Day for better fitness, better work performance, and better relationships. More importantly, he explores the various sources of motivation in our lives and offers guidance on finding the specific motivation we each need to continue working toward our goals. He's a warm and personable writer and has kept this book concise and easy to digest. I recommend it to anyone who's ever worried about being able to maintain exercise, healthy eating, or a demanding career over the course of a lifetime.

Not well written, but a lot of fun

The author has great ideas and the premise behind this book has so much potential as a Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA). (I do not want to give away many of the endings, but a roommate from hell reading bad poetry is just one potential outcome.) However, it is not well drafted and the illustrations are unnecessary and distracting. I wish the author of this book would do a piece with the authors of Whatever you want - now that would be a fantastic CYOA ride.

Pure fun!

While not being anything close to a literary accomplishment, Miranda Clarke's "Date With Destiny Adventure" book is one of the most fun I've read! Styled like those Choose Your Own Adventure books you've probably read as a child (although not affiliated with them in any way), Night of a Thousand Boyfriends will provide readers with the chance to decide what they want to do. To date or not to date...that is the question!
The book starts off with you as the main character and your best friend, Marcy, planning a lonely Friday night together. The guy you met a few days before at the bookstore hasn't called you like he said he would (typical!), so you've readied yourself for another boring evening. But then the phone rings -- and the adventure begins!
I read this book in one sitting. It really was a lot of fun choosing what would happen next, and I ended up with 24 different endings that left me boggled as to how I got there. I would definitely read another one of these books simply because they are so fun, the writing is so simple it's practically elementary, and I can't think of a better way to pass a couple of hours -- well, reading-wise anyway!

I usually hate cleanses, mostly because of the lack of tacos

I usually hate cleanses, mostly because of the lack of tacos. I mean, how am I supposed to change my life without eating tacos? That's rubbish. That's why this book is so revolutionary- my life is so much better now AND I'm eating delicious tacos all the damn time! It's great! Thank you, Taco Cleanse!

Avocado Yoga and Black Bean Tranquility

I normally hate cleanses. They make you sound like you're dirty inside. That's pretty depressing. And you do them in January, when the weather is cold and you want to be eating warming stews of fatty beef, mashed potatoes and anything with cheese. And why a taco cleanse? Just travel to any dodgy street food stand in Guadalajara and order one with "verduras, todos frescas" and you'll have a cleanse to remember. So why this book? You get to eat tacos, admittedly vegan, but tacos. Once you hide something in a taco, it might as well be tempeh as mystery meat, you'll never be able to tell. Some of the ingredients are not found at regular groceries So you'll have to go to some specialty store to find jackfruit and yeah, tempeh. For those of you not in a rural backwater such as myself, you'll be good with Wegmans or Whole Foods. Alas, here, the CRINKLY kind of cabbage is in the exotic fruits and veg aisle.

There are also exercise tips. When you remove an avocado pit and it inevitably squirts across the counter onto the floor, under the baseboards, don't swear. That's bad for your chi. Instead EMBRACE this karmic event and stoop down and do Avocado Yoga as you retrieve it from under the fridge.

Highly recommended. This is one cleanse book that will make you smile as you toss it onto the "been there, NOT doing that" pile.

Taco-rrefic!

Many people don't know that pictures of tacos can also be detoxifying to your body. From the moment I got this book I could instantly feel the leftover organic dinosaur kale in my body start to be pushed out to make room for tacos. The taco cleanse isn't just a diet, it's a way of life. If you have a dream board, put a picture of a taco on it, order this book, make a taco, and revel in a fulfilled dream.

Chipotle is great (minus the current food poisoning problem they have that is endangering lives), but there's a problem. They're burrito pushers, or even worse, they try to get you to forgo the tortilla replacing it with.... paper? Sure they have tacos, but they treat them like the black sheep of the family. The taco cleanse will help to reshape America's view of what's really important in life: Tacos.

Start with some Mighty Migas, it's a great way to acclimate your body to eating tacos. Before you know it your body will start to be able to eat what it craves: More tacos.

Who are you? Who, who, who, who?

I bought this book several months ago after reading about Cindy Sherman and her boyfriend's adventures in various European cities where her retrospective was being exhibited in art galleries. Her boyfriend, by the way, has one of the most kicka*s online journals (he doesn't like you to call it a 'blog') on the planet.

It's taken me several months to digest her works. This is heavy stuff, folks, make no mistake about it. What I struggled most with was trying to find a theme among the successive phases represented in Sherman's art.

In the end, I think I figured it out. Her art is really about the exploration of identity. In the process, she comments about feminism, overt and hidden sexuality, pornography, advertising, contemporary and classic art, but in the end, how all this onslaught of imagery affects many people's self image.

Sherman is probably best known for her "Film Stills" series from the 70s, in which she pioneered the technique of being a photographer and subject at the same time. She could have stopped there, and probably been a successful artist. In that series, she made up sets that looked like 50s and 60s movie stills. Of course, none of these movies existed.

In the 80s, her photographs became more macabre, exploring death, the despair of lost innocence, and the ominous aspects of sex and the subconscious.

Shortly after this timeframe, she did the "Fashion" series, which really mocks fashion, showing how fashion can be debasing to women, much like pornography; probably even exploring the relationship between fashion and pornography. Many people are accepting and slaves of fashion, yet abhor porn, yet Sherman shows how the two are inextricably related.

In her next phase, Sherman explores the symbolism that old master paintings exerts on modern art, news photography, and advertising, often apparently unintentionally, which raises the point that we're all connected to the collective consciousness as Jung pointed out.

By the mid 90s, Sherman's photography had included grotesque, ripped apart dolls, humans mixed with dolls, gaping pornographic dolls, composite dolls put together from different dolls, mannequins. This phase segued into surrealism, Daliesque imagery made from contorted body parts and more mannequins. This was followed by the "masks" phase, which in turn morphed into the "Hollywood Hamptons" series. Here, one can probably see best what Cindy Sherman is trying to say. While each of the characters she embodies in this series looks bizarre, we've all seen people like this every day. They remind me of Tammy Fay Baker....grotesque and exaggerated makeup. Who are you Tammy Fay? Who are you Cindy Sherman?

Sherman's most recent series is the clowns, which, in hindsight, even though drastically different from each previous phase, makes perfect sense. After all, nobody knows who's really under the clown mask. Many times, not even the clown herself.

Not to be missed if you're into art that explores the nature of consciousness.

"Well... I know what I like....

First, a few disclaimers, and depending on your perspective, they could be considered boasts. I'm not of the "art world," and therefore would not have the faintest idea if Sherman's work is from the post-avant garde period, or the post, post-avant garde period. I am blissfully unaware of the various factions in the art world, who slighted who, who promoted who, et al. I don't know the jargon. In the best philistine mode, I only "...know what I like." And I like Cindy Sherman.

As Amazon will tell you, people who buy Sherman will most likely also buy Diane Arbus. Both are "edgy," and very original. They are compelling. Literally. Instead of the quick glance, their photographs can be hypnotic. Arbus made a point of befriending, and photographing "the weird people," those at the margins, who are so often ignored and neglected by others. Sherman "burst on the art world scene" to borrow a little lingo, a decade or so after Arbus. She dispensed with the other people entirely, and the laborious efforts to befriend and pose them. She only photographed herself! And that is the first "hook." You can look at photograph after photograph, examine it carefully, and be amazed that this is the same person. Yes. She truly does have an incredible range of costumes, venues, and facial expressions. It is not all humanity, but the range covers so much that is both female and Western society. Can she compose a given picture in an hour or two... or does the entire process take a couple of weeks? I'd love to know. She certainly is an artist who masters the details in each picture.

I prefer the black and white photographs at the beginning of the book. In #12 she wears a black evening dress, with the "mandatory" accoutrement of a single strand of pearls, and an expression of leery concern. In #16 she is obviously late, quickly leaving a substantial house, with her headscarf on. And in #22 she wears an apron, utility heels and stockings, with a priceless backdrop of an old filthy, scuffed up door. #30 has been reprinted on postcards, the young woman, in a plaid shirt, with a suitcase on the berm, standing on the side of the open road. The color photographs, particularly those inspired by horror films or decay and death, I found less compelling, though the one on the cover remains riveting.

I first saw her work displayed when I was in NYC, believe it was 1987, and almost certainly it was in the Whitney, though it could have been the MOMA. And that is where I purchased this book. The book contains brief, three page bios by Peter Schjeldahl and Lisa Phillips, and a suitable index. The viewer is left to his / her own devices on what to make of each picture, no doubt, much as Sherman intended. And I suspect it is also a "movable feast" of interpretations, thanks to contrasting ambiguities. Arbus is no longer with us, leaving by her own hand. Sherman still is, and I say bravo for her vision, which will hopefully be able to continue to transcend the darker images. This is a good 5-star introduction to an amazingly creative and unique mind.

A Harvard Law School faculty member since 1964, Dershowitz is noted for representing controversial and unpopular clients. In addition to tomes on the law and two novels, he wrote a 1987 book prescribing a remedy to save American Jews (The Vanishing American Jew). In this further demonstration of his versatility, he turns to 10 stories from Genesis to demonstrate how the Bible provides a basis for contemporary ideas about justice and injustice. The narratives deal with Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham, Lot, Jacob, Dina, Tamar and Joseph. Dershowitz includes a translation of each story, recounts some theological commentaries and offers his own interpretations. He acknowledges the failings of the biblical characters, pointing out that they were guilty of deception, lust, crime, incest, revenge and murder. Their problematic actions highlighted the need for the laws that appear later in the Torah, starting with Exodus and the Ten Commandments. The book concludes with four chapters on "The Genesis of Justice in the Injustice of Genesis." Dershowitz argues that the "bad actions" depicted in Genesis gave rise to the "common law of justice." He addresses the question of theodicy, claiming that the belief in the hereafter solves the problem of why evil exists on earth. Finally, he asserts that the stories he has examined explain the need for judicial codes. The book makes an important contribution by clearly validating this claim, although Dershowitz disregards the stories' significance as a basis for moral and ethical development. (Mar.)

Harvard law professor Dershowitz has written a dazzling and stimulating commentary on ten Old Testament stories and how they provide the origins for today's laws. In a familiar style that evokes being in a small seminar with the professor, Dershowitz takes ten biblical stories, including those of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and Lot, and offers multiple views on their application today. His view is that the Book of Genesis reveals the origins of justice in society. Ranging over such topics as the insanity defense, police corruption, federal sentencing guidelines, and the defense of the guilty, the book provokes the reader to consider God's fairness as well as that of our current justice system. In the best Socratic tradition, Dershowitz (Reversal of Fortune) asks many questions and provides multiple scholarly and commonsense views of the lessons to be learned from the biblical tales. He ends the book with a discussion of the Ten Commandments and shows how they can be traced to the stories of Genesis. For believers of all faiths, as well as nonbelievers, this is an outstanding work.

In his new book, the author of, most famously, Chutzpah (1991) argues that the quest for justice is the main theme of the Bible's first book. The subsequent books of the Pentateuch are much fuller of actual rules and regulations, beginning with the Ten Commandments, but the process that culminated in them is the gist of Genesis. Dershowitz re-presents 10 stories, from the fall of Adam and Eve to the saga of Joseph and his brothers, and discusses the crucial midrashim, or rabbinic interpretations, made about their import relative to justice. Dershowitz does not merely summarize old opinions and arguments; he adds evidence and lessons from his own law practice to point up the stories' continuing relevance to the practice of justice today. Overall, he shows that there are two distinct developments. First, God grows in understanding of humanity and changes his mind about how to deal with his creation, nowhere more strikingly or with greater implications for justice than when he lets Abraham convince him to spare the few righteous in Sodom and Gomorrah from his destruction of those cities. Second, justice increasingly, though never unequivocally and completely, becomes concerned with individual persons' guilt and innocence rather than collective guilt. And what quality of the Jews enabled them to drive those developments? Why, that tireless assertiveness known as chutzpah--of course. Ray Olson

Great questions but...

In "The Genesis of Justice" the brilliant teacher/lawyer Alan Dershowitz examines the first book of the bible as the foundation of Western legal tradition. His amazing insights into what these ancient biblical stories have to say about injustice are something that everyone who is concerned about justice should read. This book is full of questions I have never thought to ask. Dershowitz's Jewish background leads him to approach the text from a direction that most Americans would never even conceive of. The world of rabbincal theology was opened to me for the first time and I found I want to know more.

Having said all that, this is not a theology textbook. It is a book about the law, so don't come to this book looking for good theology; either Jewish or Christian. Dershowitz's conclusions about God's justice, ominiscience, and perfection stretch the bounds of orthodoxy of both faiths. He reads Genesis and takes his theology straight from it without using the entire Old Testament to inform his views on the above characteristics of the Lord. I found this a bit frustrating, but don't let that stop you from reading this well done and thought provoking book by a brilliant mind.

reread it after a decade

I searched this book out, not for religious reasons, but for Dershowitz's view of lawlessness into lawfulness. There is perhaps no older documentation of crime and punishment tails written, and perhaps no other grander discection of the book of genesis. Foregoing the obvious applause to the author, this book allows one to think without bias, to reason without emotion, and to question the origins of the law. A must for anyone that will ever be in a position to parent, mentor or judge.

commentaries, the Hasidic commentaries of Rabbi Levi Isaac of
Berditchev, and the legal insight of a yeshiva educated Harvard law
professor, the reader follows the development of the concept of
justice. Consider the flawed personalities in the Book of
Genesis... it's like watching 5 seasons of Law & Order: Adam and
Eve (expulsion); Cain and Abel (murder and favoritism); Noah, Abraham
and Isaac (attempted murder, the akedah), Hagar and Sarah; Abraham,
Sodom and ten good people (collective punishment?); Esau and Jacob
(bait & switch, verbal contracts and trickery); Jacob and Laban;
Hamor, circumcision, and Jacob's sons; Joseph and his
brothers. Dershowitz provides an enlightening read and ready access to
commentaries that remove the rose-colored glasses from the stories you
heard as a child.
