"Puritan Parker" is an historical narrative that traces William Parker's journey from England to Boston in 1635, his role in the founding of Hartford, CT in 1636, and his military adventures in the Pequot Indian War of 1637. The massacre at Fort Mystic (over 600 men, women and children) was justified on religious grounds and illustrates the dangers when Church and State are one. The Puritan colonists failed to understand the Indian's worldview. They applied their own cognitive yardstick to the Native American culture and misinterpreted the Indians' actions.

About the Author
Bernard Parker is a retired college president and professor of philosophy. He is a member of the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford and spent three years researching and writing "Puritan Parker." His last published work was "World War I Sheet Music."

Spectacular characters, a wonderful blending of painstaking research and excellent story telling, Dr. Bernard Parker's most recent book,"Puritan Parker", is a must read. The historical narrative, which traces William Parker's travels, experiences and exasperations from England to his role as founding father of Hartford, Connecticut in 1636, and his challenging adventures in the Pequot Indian War, flows with sharp, witty, and undeniably superb prose that will thoroughly delight you from beginning to end. Literary kudos to Dr. Parker's new publication; I enthusiastically look forward to his next historical narrative.

We have selected "Puritan Parker" as our next choice to read in our monthly book club. It was recently reviewed in the November issue of the Hartford Magazine (Vol.IX, No. 11) on page 31 which reads: "This historical account traces the life of Sergeant William Parker, who became one of the founders of Hartford and subsequently served in the military during the Pequot Indian War, in which some 600 innocent Native Americans were massacred. From the depths of his meticulous research, Bernard Parker, one of the sergeant's descendants, creates an intriguing narrative of life in early colonial New England, and describes the cultural clashes and missteps between the religious leaders and the natives of this land."

"Puritan Parker" is an absolutely engaging book that is delightfully well written. There is no doubt about the amount of historical research that went into this work. I had no idea how much I was learning about the history of New England and the American Indians when I was reading it. I had spent 30 adult years in New England as an educator and scientist and thought I had a better than average understanding of the growth of the colonies and history of the early migration west from Massachusetts to Connecticut and New York. I was very wrong. The religious venue of the settlers and the disenfranchisement of the Pequot Indians and other tribes (with religious purpose of course) is remarkable. Very easy to read, most enjoyable, and a great deal of knowledge gained by this reader. 5 stars!
