The collapse of the Argentine economy in 2001, involving the extraordinary default on $150 billion in debt, has been blamed variously on the failure of neoliberal policies or on the failure of the Argentine government to pursue those policies vigorously enough during the 1990s. But this is too myopic a view, Klaus Veigel contends, to provide a fully satisfactory explanation of how a country enjoying one of the highest standards of living at the end of the nineteenth century became a virtual economic basket case by the end of the twentieth. Veigel asks us to take the long view of Argentina’s efforts to re-create the conditions for stability and consensus that had brought such great success during the country’s first experience with globalization a century ago.

The experience of war and depression in the late 1930s and early 1940s had discredited the earlier reliance on economic liberalism. In its place came a turn toward a corporatist system of interest representation and state-led, inward-oriented economic policies. But as major changes in the world economy heralded a new era of globalization in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the corporatist system broke down, and no social class or economic interest group was strong enough to create a new social consensus with respect to Argentina’s economic order and role in the world economy. The result was political paralysis leading to economic stagnation as both civilian and military governments oscillated between protectionism and liberalization in their economic policies, which finally brought the country to its nadir in 2001.

“Veigel’s book addresses an issue that has been at the center of much research in the past. What does explain the steady economic decay of Argentina, particularly from the 1970s onward? Many scholars ascribe the recurring economic crises of that country to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank’s imposition of misguided policies. Veigel’s thesis challenges this view, as it contends that the seeds of the Argentine decline rest in the socioeconomic disintegration that began to affect that country from the 1940s on as vested interest groups engaged in a zero-sum-game struggle. If things went terribly wrong in Argentina in the twentieth century, it is not because that country was the victim of an international conspiracy. Instead, much of the blame is to be placed squarely on the Argentine political and economic elites. Through the use of new archival data and personal interviews, Veigel traces the historical evolution of Argentine policymaking as resulting primarily from endogenous rather than external factors. Veigel’s work is an excellent contribution to the scholarship on the political economy of Argentina and will make an important point of reference for future works on this controversial subject.”

This is an excellent book on a timely topic

I highly recommend Klaus Veigel's "Dictatorship, Democracy, and Globalization." In addition to providing fresh new insights regarding the disintegration of the Argentine economy in the late 20th century, Veigel's book is an important cautionary tale regarding the bankrupting of a country by its short-sighted political elite. The book is highly relevant to all students of economic crises, and to anyone following the present fiscal predicament of the United States.

Indispensible for understanding economic crisis and Latin American politics

Students of Latin American history and of economic crisis management both would benefit strongly from reading of this excellent book. Veigel's close dissection of the multiple economic crises in Argentina provides a cautionary tale of bad economics and bad politics. Broader lessons can be also drawn today for how bad management can turn economic troubles into full blown crisis. The inability to "learn lessons" from crisis to crisis, and the (ongoing) failure of Argentina's leadership are also on full display. Veigel's first rate research sees him interview all of the key (living) players in this crisis, and very few come out with their reputations intact.

Verda Foster has worked in and around the art and crafts industry for twenty years, and you can often find her judging at one of the many ceramic and craft shows held throughout Southern California.

She has been teaching the art of painting statuary for thirteen or fourteen years, and enjoys seeing a student's eyes light up when they see a piece of white-ware come to life in their hands.

She wrote her first story in 1999 and was hooked. Her first book, The Chosen, was published in September of 2000.

She has collaborated with B. L. Miller on several stories, and loves working with this wonderful writer.

Verda Foster has a new forthcoming novel, 'These Dreams' which will be published later this year by BookEnds Press and distributed by SCP.



B. L. Miller

B. L. Miller claims to be a hermit by nature, loving to stay at home and partake in her favorite pastimes of reading, writing, and painting garden gnomes.

She was born in Massachusetts during a blizzard in 1967 and was raised in and around Albany, New York. Now a resident of Maine, she still gets teased about drinking "caw-fee." She was a wild child, spent her teenage years giving her mother gray hair and self-destructing. Now she spends her days working for a large telecommunication company and her nights sitting in front of the computer happily writing away and answering email. She loves writing and hopes to continue to do so for a very long time.

B. L.'s other works include an 'Accidental Love', 'Josie and Rebecca: The Western Chronicles,' published in 1999 by B. L. Miller and Vada Foster.

B. L. also has a novel 'Court of Love' that was only published in German.

Fast-paced, Fun to Read, and Highly Recommended

Grace Waters is a troubled, smart-aleck, 17-year-old juvenile delinquent apparently intent on harming others and herself. She's gotten so out of hand that neither her mother nor her step-father knows what to do with her. After assaulting a teacher, the juvenile court judge incarcerates Grace until her 18th birthday, which is six months away. Grace is too angry to care. She arrives at Sapling Hill, a kind of boot camp for juveniles, and it doesn't take long for her to realize that the camp instructors don't play by the same rules as the world outside the institution. By yelling, shaming, intimidation, and withholding of privileges, the instructors compel the teen girls to behave, and they suffer consequences when they do not. Surprisingly, Grace responds-in particular, she responds to the tough and relentless Instructor Carey, who sees something in Grace that the kid doesn't even know is there. But Grace's journey isn't going to be an easy one. She is hiding secrets that first must be lanced and healed, and the young woman is in no way prepared to share, not even with Carey for whom she gradually gains a caring and respect.
From the first pages, I was hooked. The narrative is fast-paced, the secondary characters are colorful, and the dialogue sparkles. Some of the events at Sapling Hill are quite amusing, and there is plenty of conflict between the teens. It reads like a cross between "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "The Breakfast Club," in other words, immensely accessible, seemingly light-but dealing with harsh realities under the surface. Grace's journey is compelling, and Carey's role in it is honorable. The relationships that Grace develops once she drops her guard enough to look around and open up feel truthful and real.
Miller and Foster have done an excellent job showing Grace's growth curve from age 17 to 19 or so as she learns to deal with the abuses she has suffered. The romance that eventually grows for her is a fitting end to her struggle. A book that is a lot of fun to read, this one is highly recommended. ~Lori L. Graceful Water...a MUST READ!

Graceful. Such an ironic name for the violent teenage delinquent that throws a chair at her teacher, cusses a judge, and spits on a prison guard. But ironic in the sense that there is so much more to this character than her first appearance.
From the moment she steps out of the prison van and into Sapling Hill, a boot camp for girls, the reader is drawn in to this character, wanting to know everything there is to know about her and her past.
But Grace is hiding that past behind an iron wall. A wall that only one woman will be able to break down. Joanna Carey is the senior instructor at Sapling Hill and it's her tough as nails approach that will either break down that wall, or send Grace directly to prison. The choice of which happens is ultimately up to Grace.
It's this journey that keeps the reader turning the pages, watching Grace try to go from an angry juvenile delinquent to the intelligent and talented young woman that Instructor Carey sees her for.
Once you start reading about this journey, you won't stop until the very last page.

Dynamic! Outstanding!

Graceful "Grace" Waters is an angry and beligerent 17-year-old. Chock full of attitude and bucking authority at every opportunity, she soon finds her smart-mouth landing her in front of the same judge for the umpteenth time. Patience worn thin, the judge sentences Grace to Sapling Hill - a place specifically designed for Grace's brand of attitude.

There she gets off to a very rocky start with Joanna Carey, the senior instructor of Sapling Hill. The instructor cuts Grace no slack whatsoever. Every time Grace's sarcastic attitude comes out, she finds herself having to "drop and give ten" for the instructor. Saying Grace did alot of pushups is an understatement!

Unexpected and difficult circumstances soon force Joanna and Grace to share quarters, where Joanna begins to suspect there is more to Grace's attitude than meets the eye. Whatever the reason, it was something severe enough to have made the young woman become extremely bitter and uncaring about life in general. As she spends more and more time with Grace, Joanna begins to believe that the young woman is worth saving and embarks on the task of getting Grace to face the reason behind her turmoil and anger. And maybe, just maybe, getting Grace to believe in herself once again.

When someone from Joanna's past suddently surfaces, Grace "discovers" something about Joanna that intrigues her greatly. Joanna is a lesbian. Having just begun to sort out her own identity, this fact greatly interests Grace. As Grace nears the end of her time at Sapling Hill, she finds her feelings for the erstwhile instructor changing - feelings that cannot be allowed by the instructor to be acted on. However, Grace has decided that Joanna is the "one" for her and sets out to do whatever it takes to get the reluctant older woman to believe this.

VH Foster, who also writes under the name of Verda Foster, and BL Miller, co-authors of the terrifically dynamic book Crystal's Heart, once again deliver a solid, quality tale. Graceful Waters is a book that grabs your attention and your heartstrings in the first few pages and doesn't let go - even at the very end. It's a book that very definitely defines for the reader, both young and old, that having just one person believe in you can carry you along way in believing in yourself.

This is an excellent book. It discusses not only what cloud computing is, but the best method of how you can move your applications into the cloud. The content is well organized and written. I liked the fact that it described the history of the technology and a detailed description of how it actually works. Describing how cloud computing actually works sets it apart from other cloud computing books that I read which only scratched the surface.

You can tell the author has a lot of experience in cloud computing and IT in general. This was evident not only by the content of the book but by all the certifications listed after his name. I also liked the fact that he was not afraid to talk about past projects that were unsuccessful. He explained why things failed and how to avoid the same bumps in the road that he experienced. It is always good to learn about not only what works, but what does not work (and why!).

The book also discusses the business side of cloud computing. I liked the 4 D's methodology for migrating to the cloud. It was easy for me to understand the basic premise and the logical flow made sense to me.

I see the book as being a good reference for me in the future. I will definitely refer back to it when I need to revisit business and technical concepts of cloud computing. Surprisingly, the book also had a little humor sprinkled throughout which was very refreshing to me. I highly recommend the book.

Comprehensive Guide to Cloud Computing

The hybrid enterprise is upon us and whether you are looking for an introduction to cloud computing or a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to migrate your applications to the cloud, this book is for you. “Cloud Computing, From Beginning to End” is a fast read and you can tell that Mr. Rafaels has real world experience in this field.

I found the in-depth discussions about the underlying technologies that enable cloud computing easy to understand and very helpful. There is also detailed discussion on the security issues related to cloud technology, and a very insightful 4-step methodology with instructions and examples that federal agencies and commercial enterprises can rapidly put to practical use.

I also appreciated the section on analyzing the return on investment of migrating enterprise applications to the cloud and linking KPIs to business/mission outcomes. I plan to keep this book on my desk as a quick reference guide.

I enjoyed reading the book. It was concise and had great tables to illustrate the similarities and differences of architectures. Of more importance, Ray clearly understands the importance of software and systems engineering disciplines in an ever growing complex information system.

Finally, a use for cat hair.

With the help of tis book, my wife has made all of the Christmas gifts for our friends and family. She has made 4 pairs of socks, 2 scarves, 3 hats, a toaster cozy, slippers, a winter jacket and carpeted the family room. I highly recommend tis book to anyone who, like my wife, has 14 shedding cats in their house.

Cute felted finger puppets

It really only teaches you how to felt cat hair and make finger puppets or little fingers out of it. However, if you do, they're really cute. I made one for my friend for his birthday out of his own cat's hair. I did a little extra embroidery on mine to give it more defined claws, eyes, and face.
