About the Author
A nationally known and widely sought-for commentator, Eduard Qualls was born in 1954 in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas. Having been raised in a religious household in which the only things to read were the newspaper, the Bible, a hymnal and a 1956 set of encyclopedias, he found refuge within that multi-volume set. An early learner, before starting the second grade he had already read through the encyclopedias once, and was starting again to go through his “favorite letters”: ‘C’ for California and China (and Chinese), ‘G’ for Greece (and Greek), ‘U’ for United Kingdom and United States, and ‘W’ for both World & World War II. This early start in education, augmented by a remarkable set of public school teachers, culminated in his testing out of an entire year of college. He had started speaking French at age 11, followed by Latin, Spanish, and more French in high school. At the same time he had started studying German and Chinese on his own, and pursued Modern Greek with tutoring by the mother of the local Greek Orthodox priest. A college degree in German and Music was followed by graduate work in German, Latin, and Musicology, culminating in a switch to Graduate Business. A shock to someone whose life had been totally immersed in Humanities, he adapted to this move into business studies by understanding accounting as the ‘language’ on which business is based, and by realizing that all business activities are rooted in humans, their communities and human endeavor. A Master of Science degree in Business Administration was followed by almost thirty years of successful productivity within the software industry, specializing in programming and software development from low-level device drivers and operating systems work to high-level applications: computer graphics, internationalization, and text processing and localized formatting. These activities were greatly enhanced by studies in Mathematics, Chinese, Japanese, Sanskrit, Hebrew and Arabic. The late economic downturn has given him the opportunity to put into writing a culmination and aggregation of the insights derived from his academic training, his long-term studies in the Humanities and his observations of the human condition and its development throughout history. Mr. Qualls is the author of several books, including a reference book detailing the rules whereby he had achieved a mastery of English and its usage, “The Qualls Concise English Grammar”.

I have no background in business or economics (history major). Some of this was a little dense for me, but it was an enjoyable read, probably because I agree with the author's view that capitalism is a great economic engine that must be regulated by goverment to reduce exploitation and abuse.

But Kirk Varnedoe and Pepe Karmel, the chief curator and adjunct assistant curator, respectively, of the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Painting and Sculpture, also go deeply into Pollock's art in eye-opening ways. This book is the catalog for the retrospective of Pollock's art-shattering oeuvre at the Museum of Modern Art in the fall of 1998 and includes many biographical pictures as well as color plates of Pollock's paintings, from the awkward but earnest early works to the late, great, famous canvasses. Varnedoe's essay, aptly titled "Comet: Jackson Pollock's Life and Work," deftly invites the reader into Pollock's world, starting with his country studio: "The structure, often called a barn, is in fact more like a glorified tool shed." Karmel's essay, "Pollock at Work: The Films and Photographs of Hans Namuth," is a truly groundbreaking exploration of Pollock's technique. Karmel has scrutinized every frame of every piece of film, still or moving, ever taken of Pollock painting. He arrives at absolutely original conclusions: Pollock's all-over swirls of dripped and flung paint often began as figurative works and clearly relate to such all-American stalwarts as Thomas Hart Benton. Karmel makes countless other sharp observations, noting the difference, for example, between fast-looking marks and the slow, deliberate movements with which they were made (and vice versa). Pollock Without the Boring Mythologizing

Excellent companion piece to the MOMA show (which traveled to London's Tate) goes beyond all other Pollock explorations. A "must" for students of modern American art as well as those just wanting to get a better understanding of what Pollock was REALLY DOING.
Large format features fold-out reproductions of breathtakingly high quality. Among these, incredibly, are paintings not found in any other published sources. (The incomparable Lucifer (1947) is one such work).
The text is scholarly but readable, and although there is a considerable amount of it, each open page of writing offers at least a couple relevant and highly interesting photos or other illustrations. The many large color plates would certainly make a gorgeous and impressive coffee table book for anyone who doesn't choose to read it.
Kirk Varnedoe writes definitively about Pollock's mercurial life & career. Varnedoe's nearly 75 pages of biographical analysis are a welcome alternative to the kind of misguided mythologizing about Pollock that has for a long time colored the artist as an overrated art "star."
Pepe Karmel's contribution to this book is an amazing analysis of Pollock's painting process through an exhaustive examination of the famous films and photographs of Pollock at work. This was a fascinating, ground-breaking part of the exhibition, and is equally wonderful in the book.
Well worth the price.

simply the best

Update, November 2015. Looks like amazon or some third-party seller is now linking the cover image of an amazing book (kirk varnedoe's and pepe karmel's big and profusely bw and color-illustrated exhibition catalogue from 1998) to the disappointing purchase of a thin and badly illustrated little Pollock overview. My review and many of the others here are about a richly produced book published by the MOMA.

This breathtaking catalogue is simply the best single volume available on Jackson Pollock, and this is primarily--but not only--because of the number and quality of the reproductions it offers. Almost every one of the dozen or so Pollock books in my library contains a painting not available in the others, but this book collects and beautifully photographs the greatest number and variety of his canvases--outside of a catalogue raisonee.
As the other reviewers state, there are many generously-sized fold-out pages here, and the crispness and resolution of these big reprints and of the more modest pages are simply amazing. To take two essential examples, this book's reprints of "One: Number 31, 1950" and "Blue Poles: Number 11, 1952" are astoundingly clear, better than any of the many other versions I've seen in art books, even in Ellen Landau's large-format survey, a book which also includes gatefolds.
(Another reviewer, by the by, states that "Lucifer" is not available in any other book, which is not true. Among other places, it appears in Landau, in Elizabeth's Frank's concise volume, and as the sole color reproduction in the book for the 1965 MOMA retrospective. Anyway, it gets terrific treatment here.)
Another invaluable inclusion in this book is a great number of full-sized detail photos of the canvases. For example, on a page adjacent to "Lucifer" and "Autumn Rhythm" and "Full Fathom Five," we see another photo of just one small section of that same painting but in 1-to-1 scale; these details reveal much of the dynamic, kinetic, urgent quality of these works, their encrustations of sand, glass, pennies, paint caps--traits which even this book could otherwise never offer a livingroom Pollock-viewer.
Further, having seen the exhibit in January of 1999, I can attest to the generally excellent fidelity of the color-balance. (Curiously, no one seems to be able to capture "Autumn Rhythm"'s grey-teal passages in a book, but if you were at this show or have viewed the painting at the Met you've seen them.)
The accompanying articles are excellent. Kirk Varnedoe overviews of Pollock's life, artistic aims, his accomplishments, all illustrated with family and archival photographs and drawing on Pollock quotations. Pepe Karmel uses the extensive photographic and film record of Pollock painting to analyze Pollock's physical movements. Most wonderful are Karmel's computer reconstructions of early states of the painting "Autumn Rythm," based on Hans Namuth's photos of Pollock at work.
In sum, this book gives the finest, fullest offering of both Pollock's life and art.

Best Reproductions and Most Complete

I picked this book up at the MOMA Pollock retrospective a couple years ago and have used it extensively. Having seen many of the paintings in this book firsthand, I can say that these are some of the best reproductions offerred in book form on Pollock's work. Another plus is that several paintings are printed on fold-out pages, so that the work doesn't cross the book's seam. So many of his paintings are extremely wide that this makes a lot of sense (otherwise, there would be hardly any resolution in the height dimension).
If you're interested in Pollock and need to refer to the reproductions, I absolutely recommend this book above all others out there.

the first work on Capone and still a classic.

this book writen in 1971 was the first major work to adress capone and the mob world of organized crime. smooth reading and the author either doesn't have the sources available to writers today or just doesn't take the liberties and resultant credibility strain that can happen as a result.in the Bergreen book Capone for instance there seem to be alot more ties between city counsel,the police,government agents and the mob.As if the mob has penetrated so deep into government,that only a handful of honest police and officials are left to confront Capone. In the Kobler book,however,the lines are more cleanly drawn between Capone and the "forces of law and order" while the author does admit to some indiscretions on the part of alot of government people by actually being on Capones payroll.It seems in the Kobler book that the government can't figure out how to get at Capone entrenched as he is behind his organization. Another instance of the Bergreen book differing substantially from Kobler is in regard to Capones charity giving. In the Bergreen book Capones charities are represented as being alot more generous which can make the reader somewhat empathetic with Al as he literally gives away at least tens of thousands away to people hard hit by the depression. Kobler presents his charity giving as an attempt more at PR and to make the "man in the streets" empathetic hence more willing to buy Capone beer and patronize his gambling and cat house businesses.Also Bergreen, while admitting to the debilitating effects of Capones syphillus,points out that he was still able to maintain his status as "crime boss" and was capable of decision making even up to the last. Kobler however shows a Capone after Alcatraz as an invalid with a miniscule amount of decision making and influence. These two books go together and are both important to understanding the era.At times you have to admit that with the family ties and the organization of these crime syndicates,it's understandable how hard it would be to break them up.Capone comes off as just a figurehead for a steamroller force known by various names like the "Mob",the "Organization" etc. An excellent work by Kobler on the Depression Era.

Delivers with the Punch of a Machine Gun!

The definitive biography of "Scarface Al" Capone, who ruled the Chicago underworld with an iron fist during Prohibition. John Kobler is a fine writer whose flair with words will keep his readers glued to the pages, regardless of the subject matter. In "Capone," he masterfully recounts the rise and fall of the Windy City's overlord of vice and crime as only he can, presented in an honest, objective, and straightforward (but never dull) manner. This is a highly entertaining effort which any crime historian is sure to enjoy. My only regret is that Mr. Kobler didn't tackle the biographies of other gangland luminaries as well (although he did an excellent job narrating the history of Prohibition in "Ardent Spirits"). If you must read just one book about Big Al, then this is the one. As far as I'm concerned, you can skip all the others.

This book was absolutely mindblowing. I am doing a school report and I really didnt want to read it, but after I started, I was pulled in by all of the interesting facts this book contains about Big Al. Was he really all that bad? Read the book and find out for yourself.

Telling a Slanted History

Ian Talbot will mislead a lay reader into a terrible morass of distortions about India's Partition with this book. His flagrantly biased view obscures the benefit of the information he offers those interested in modern Indian history. Talbot exonerates Muslims and repeatedly blames Hindus for the violence of Partition by giving few examples of Muslim violence and offering endless examples of Hindu and Sikh attacks on Muslims--that's called a lie by omission, Mr. Talbot. Thus,instead of describing the truth of Muslim aggression to drive Hindus out of West Punjab and Hindu retaliation against that, he describes its reverse: untruth as history. His former student Yasmin Khan's much acclaimed "The Great Partition" offers a very similar style of dissembling. I wonder if they will spawn an entire western school of rewriting Partition history through Muslim-apologist eyes.It's not that Talbot doesn't know his history; he just chooses to tell one side of it. It's the Sikhs and Hindus mainly who are the villains of his Partition. How often he singles out the Sikh leader Tara Singh for making inflammatory statements, and says little about Jinnah, as if the Muslim League head, vigorously lobbying to create Pakistan, and allowing his henchmen to unleash a torrent of violence across Punjab to drive Hindus out, were some timid little mouse making no noise at all. It's the Hindus and Sikhs out hurting Muslims in his misrepresentation of history, and the British police, who so openly sided with their largely Muslim forces, allowing Hindus to be slaughtered, who are let off the hook. As a mere 'transitional' force, says Talbot, how could British authorities possibly do anything to stop the carnage? Dereliction of duty, and abdication of responsibility never had a better excuse-maker. But Talbot isn't done with just that lie; he then reprehensibly compares the inaction of British authorities to a host of incidents where police in independent India have failed to act. Remember, in his view: India, bad. Pakistan, good. Thus no incidents of Pakistan police turning a blind eye to crime come to his mind. Talbot is a dangerous and scurrilous breed of historian - one who takes the facts, picks a few to put on the table, hides the rest in his pocket and claims he's giving us the true story. Claims it's history. What an ignoble scholar. Don't the editors at Oxford University Press know anything about the subject they're publishing? Or do they simply share Talbot's prejudices?

Proof, maybe?

I bought this book hoping to get a scientific perspective on the Law of Attraction. I know the importance of a positive attitude. Take my husband, for example. He's a pretty even person. No major lows, but he's quite confident and tends to be "lucky". Interestingly enough, he doesn't buy into the law of attraction. He thinks having a positive attitude and accepting things you cannot change just makes sense in a practical sort of way. If he's not bogged down worried about stuff then he'll be more open to opportunities when they present themselves. Conversely, if a person is negative, they will bring out the worst in other people if they don't send them running first. I agree with him. But, there's the "lucky" factor that doesn't play into that equation. There are countless examples of things happening to him that just leave me shaking my head in disbelief. Like, the time he was joking with me about buying a '59 Cadillac to restore. I explained to him how nuts he was and twenty minutes later we passed a '59 Cadillac on the freeway. This is a bit of a silly example, but there are many more, both big and small.

For the last few years I have been growing increasingly negative. This was largely due to having our second child and being extremely exhausted all the time. Coincidentally, I thought, things started to do a downward spiral for us (specifically financially). After reading Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" I decided to see if there was a bit more to the power of thought. Again, I was looking for some clinical studies when I bought this book. Unfortunately, I didn't find the solid research results I was looking for. Apparently studies were done and books were read and from that the author came up with a formula that seemed to be the most successful at producing results.

Rather than write the book off as a total loss I decided to follow the formula for 2 weeks. I "canceled" any negative thoughts that arose (and there were many). I didn't worry about how something would "manifest". I would just visualize having it, believe that I'd get it (hard to do) and release (harder to do). The first visualization was that I'd log into my bank account and see that the balance had doubled. Usually the opposite would happen. I couldn't fathom how this would happen, but I pushed that thought out of my head and released it. A few days later I logged into our bank account to do our regular banking. The account balance had doubled. We had gotten a rebate we were due. It was a large one. We had been due this money for a year but we were unsure how to go about claiming it; we were waiting to hear back from our accountant. Somehow our accountant did it without getting us involved. Also, my husband started a new job; we were expecting his first check the following month, but they pay 2 weeks in advance. All of this happened within a couple of days of my completing the formula.

My husband's response was, well, this stuff was all going to happen anyway. Again, he's right, but it's not like if this manifestation stuff works money is just going to start falling out of the sky. There has to be a logical way for it to come about. While I didn't run around screaming, "It works! It works!", I couldn't say it didn't work.

Within a couple of days our washing machine broke and we also needed to buy a new refrigerator. I found the ones I wanted and ordered them. I was told it would be 1-2 weeks for the washer to be delivered and a month for the refrigerator. It took a day or two before it occurred to me to try to manifest their early arrival. I kind of didn't want to even try because it would be an easy way to be proven wrong. I decided to be a big girl. I ordered the appliances on a Wednesday, I did the "formula" on that Friday. On Monday, I got a message from the delivery guy asking if he could deliver the washer and fridge later that day. They were delivered in 3 business instead of 1-2 weeks and a month!

I told my husband. He said, "I don't believe it, but don't stop doing it."

So, I didn't. I lost my cell phone at the airport. I tracked it using my husband's phone--we watched it leaving the airport. I was bummed that someone had stolen it. I was also bummed because it would be expensive to replace since I had had it less than 2 years. I decided to turn my attitude around. I did the formula and decided that I would be better off for having lost my phone. The next day I got a new/better phone. My contract had been for a year rather than 2 so I was able to get the new phone at a discount. The cell phone provider had introduced a new calling plan that would save me $20 a month. I was $12 better off per month. Not a big deal, but far better than what I initially expected. Then, when I got home.. I had an email (don't ask me how) from a man who said his grandson had picked up my phone at the airport. He asked for my address and mailed my old phone. So, I was slightly financially better off and my faith in humanity was restored! ;)

I read another book that suggested picking a bill that you need to pay and try to manifest the money to pay it. Since we had the extra cash come in earlier in the month I had been hoarding away money into our savings account. When I do this I tend to leave us with not enough money in our checking account to cover our expenses. Our savings account is at a different bank so it's a bit of a hassle to transfer the money back. So, I quickly did the formula for $500. I thought that would be enough to get us through the month. I honestly didn't think I did the formula effectively enough.. Two days later we went to a party for the Melbourne Cup (horse races). Long story short, they had multiple betting games and a raffle. My husband and I ended up winning 3 out of 5 of the games totaling $533.

I cannot state emphatically enough how up until I logged into the bank account and saw the doubled balance--all things financial felt like a kick in the gut (for the last several years). Always negative, never positive. It's been 2 months since that happened. With all that, I have to say I'm still skeptical--I was raised to be logical and clearly that stuck! But, I will continue to follow the "formula" as authentically as I can to see where it takes me. Maybe I'll convince my husband to give it a go as well. I've joked with him that he should use his "powers" for good, not an evil Cadillac.

Anyway, that's what happened to me! Would love to know if anyone has had anything similar happen.

Life changing and unique

As someone with a huge library of self help books, I can't begin to tell you how different this one is. This book is based on actual research, unlike almost all the others - and it is clear from page one. This book is an incredibly honest and fun read. As I turned the pages I could see why some of the things I tried in the past worked and others didn't, which alone was well worth the price of the book..

There is a very important concept in this book that is completely common sense, but I've never before seen it so plainly expressed:

1.) Methods only work when they are matched to where you are at, right now. Mismatched methods produce lousy results.
2.) When you find a method that works, it produces growth.
3.) As you grow, you get out of sync with the method that worked to produce your growth up to that point.
4.) When this happens it is time to celebrate, and then buckle down to find the next method that will work for you.
5.) Cling to the old method, will only mean that things won't work out very well!

This book walks you through the process of finding what works for you right now, and avoiding the pitfalls of what doesn't. I completely agree with the author that when you find the method that is working for you, amazing things happen right away. There's no guessing. When you have it right, you know it!

Unlike so many other self help authors, this one doesn't play the blame game. I've read so many books that said something like "This technique works for everyone. If it's not working, you are doing something wrong/subconsciously blocking it/a bad person/."

Baloney. This author ran a research project that actually tested (what a novel concept) many of these 'one size fits all' methods and didn’t find a single one that was good for more than a small number of people at any given time. So it turns out the problem isn't with us, it's with who we're trusting to help us!

Rather than preaching the 'one true way' Dr. Martin provides a list of techniques that work, and helps you figure out which combination of them will work in your life right now.

Amazing book. Highly recommended. I've never seen anything like it in my decades of self-help and personal growth reading, workshops, etc. Get it now and read it right away.

The Right Stuff

Remember the saying: "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"? Well, "The God Formula" doesn't give you a fish, it teaches you how to catch your own. It, quite literally, takes the magic out of the "magic formula" and brings it down to earth. Adapting or combining the components to suit your own personal situation is key. It puts you in the driver's seat so you can manage your own life. The tips and methods you are given along the way are both easy to read and understand. The relaxation method alone is worth the cost of a book, or two, or three!

Its comforting to know "The God Formula" is based on actual scientific evidence thoroughly tested on "real" people with "real" results. This is not a fairy tale. Its something you can take home, test out and apply throughout the whole of your life to bring to you what you both need and desire. As you grow and learn, and your circumstances change, you, yourself, adapt and recombine the components (chucking those that no longer work, and picking up others that do now work). Its like fine tuning a radio or television station, getting clearer and clearer sights and sounds. You don't have to wait for permission or direction, you just start recombining until you get the combination that works for you!

If you follow Jeffery Martin's steps and instructions, you will not only learn what, why and how to draw to you what you need, but you'll also learn a lot about yourself and your natural abilities to govern your own life. "The God Formula" is definitely worth the read!
