Marvel Studios approach to its Cinematic Universe--beginning with the release of Iron Man (2008)--has become the template for successful management of blockbuster film properties. Yet films featuring Marvel characters can be traced back to the 1940s, when the Captain America serial first appeared on the screen.
This collection of new essays is the first to explore the historical, textual and cultural context of the larger cinematic Marvel universe, including serials, animated films, television movies, non-U.S. versions of Marvel characters, films that feature characters licensed by Marvel, and the contemporary Cinematic Universe as conceived by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. Films analyzed include Transformers (1986), Howard the Duck (1986), Blade (1998), Planet Hulk (2010), Iron Man: Rise of Technovore (2013), Elektra (2005), the Conan the Barbarian franchise (1982-1990), Ultimate Avengers (2006) and Ghost Rider (2007).

Roadside Geology of Oregon, by Marli B. Miller

When the first edition of Roadside Geology of Oregon was published in 1978, it was revolutionary—the first book in a series designed to educate, inspire, and wow nongeologists. Back then, the implications of plate tectonic theory were only beginning to shape geologic research and discussion. Geologists hadn’t yet learned that Oregon’s Klamath and Blue Mountains were pieces of far-traveled island arcs and ocean basins that had been piled against the growing North American continent. Steaming volcanoes, ghost forests, recent landslides, and towns heated with geothermal energy attest to Oregon’s still-prominent position at the edge of an active tectonic plate.

Author, photographer, and geologist Marli Miller has written a completely new second edition based on the most up-to-date understanding of Oregon’s geology. Spectacular photographs showcase the state’s splendor while also helping readers understand geologic processes at work. Maps generated with the latest technology show you just how far the science of geology—and Mountain Press—has come since 1978, a time when today’s takenfor-granted computers were as new as plate tectonic theory. Roadside Geology of Oregon, Second Edition, is a must-have for every Oregon resident, student, and rockhound.

Review
Oregon has some spectacular geology and for all the rockhounds out there, UO geologist Marli B. Miller's newly updated Roadside Geology of Oregon provides everything you need to know about pulling over on road trips to gawk at feldspar and fossils. The first version of this guide came out in 1978, and a whole lot of awesome geology has taken place since then.
The book is easy to follow, including a plethora of maps and details descriptions of how Oregon's iconic landscapes came into being. For example: Oregon's oldest exposed rocks are 400 million years old, found in central Oregon. And how cool is it that Mount Pisgah is made of "altered 30-million-year-old basaltic lavas"? If you agree, then bring this book along on your next road trip so you can enthrall (or annoy, if they're spoilsports) your family with the age in millions of years of each passing rock formation. --Amy Schneider, Eugene Weekly

"The geology information is breathtaking, but the easy format appeals to the humble traveler looking for a new destination as well. The photography is stunning and provides a current view of the state...Discover Oregon on a whole new level."--Wendy Stevens --Portland Book Review

One of the very best Roadside Geology books
By Daniel
I just finished reading Miller's 2nd edition yesterday and am very pleased with it. I live in Oregon, am not a geologist or scientist, and have taken the 1st edition on many trips, and I expect to take the new edition on many more. It is superior in many ways to the 1978 1st edition (with no disrespect intended to Alt's and Hydmann's first venture into the roadside geology business). I also think it is one of the best written of the 15 or so Roadside Geology books I own.

She has used more modern names for the state regions and has slightly rearranged the order of presentation for the better. She has paid close attention to details, thousands of them. (I wonder what her notebooks look like.) Evidently, she has personally driven most if not all of the roads described in the book, and she seems to have taken most of the photographs herself. (She likes polarizers and deep blue skies!)

What does Miller do that makes her book so good? She seems to have tried to reach a broad range of readers, both those who already are familiar with geological concepts, explanations, and vocabulary, and those who are approaching a geology book for the first time. For example, geologists think of rock formations and accreted terranes the way that novelists and biographers think of people as characters: you've got to give them names and ages and a certain "personality". Then the writer has to refer to dozens of them, but not lose the reader, who may be picking up the book months after reading it the last time. In the 1st edition Alt & Hyndman solved the problem by avoiding formation names and just using descriptions of the rock types in them. Miller bravely uses the actual names of formations and adds succinct reminders most of the time of what the formation contains. It worked for me, and now terms like Siletzia, Columbia River Basalt Group, Tyee, and Clarno all make music for me. Her other science writing skills are very good.

She succeeds in making it much easier to actually locate a site while being a passenger and reading aloud the relevant passage to the driver. She often gives the mileage marker, a great benefit from the Oregon Dept. of Transportation. She often thinks to tell you where the point happens where you pass from one terrane and/or formation to another. She posts actual color photos of interesting sites and points out what to look for in the picture. The books are printed on heavy-weight glossy paper that reproduces color photos very richly and with a lot of detail.

The famous strip maps of the Roadside Geology series are enhanced in her hands. The glossy paper, use of color, and modern printing techniques permit her and the publisher to put much detail into the maps. They are very rich. The material is referenced both by the labels and pointers as well as text descriptions of what is on the roads. As other authors have done, she sometimes refers to a small town that is not on the map, but not too often.

She has included coverage of some minor roads that were not described in the first edition. Two examples are Oregon Rte. 205 branching from US 26 near Portland to Tillamook and OR 205 in the southeast Oregon basin and range region near Steens Mountain.

She includes the big geological stories of Oregon: examples are subduction earthquakes, the clockwise rotation of the coast mountains around a center in southern Washington, the effect of the Missoula ice-age floods on the Columbia River region, and the Basin and Range faulting. Little tidbits are included, too: the folding of the Oregon coast with low center (near Newport, if I recall correctly) and the making of the weird Oxbow on the Snake River and many more.

I think even readers from other states and countries may find this book well worth reading because Oregon has such complexity and Miller has described it so well.

The Roadside Geology Series just keeps getting better and better!
By Theresa Holmes
I have been reading the Roadside Geology books (and Geology Underfoot) for at least 20 years, and have copies of all that have been published. I’ve studied the original version of RG Oregon numerous times, and have been waiting for at least the last decade for an updated edition. This has especially been the case since I read Roadside Geology of Idaho, by David Alt, which included his theory that the Columbia Plateau flood basalts and the succession of calderas forming the Snake River plain (of which the Yellowstone volcano is the latest) were both the result of an asteroid strike in southeastern Oregon about 17 million years ago. No mention of that was made in the original version of RG Oregon.

Unfortunately, no mention of that idea was made in this version either, at least not directly. That’s okay, because in all other ways, the 2nd Edition is well worth the money, as well as the time it takes to read it carefully.

Although the theory of an asteroid strike isn’t even mentioned, there is a set of drawings on page 215 that shows the distribution of the major units of the flood basalts, beginning with the Steens Mountain series in southeastern Oregon between 16.8 and 16.6 million years ago. This matches up beautifully with the location of the initial impact crater, especially since it is circular, more or less. It is followed by the Imnaha series, which began in the same area and flowed northeast into Idaho and around the Wallowa mountains to flow west. Above that lie the massive Grand Ronde series, which overlie the Imnaha series and cover the southeastern third of Washington. Not only that, they flowed west all the way to the Pacific and caused some interesting land forms and features there. Not once, but many times. At the same time, the less extensive Prineville and Picture Gorge series added to the volume of flood basalt in north central Oregon. As if that weren’t bad enough, the Wanapum series (also referred to as the Yakima basalts in the original versions of RG Oregon and Washington) flowed over much of the Grand Ronde basalts in Washington and northern Oregon, again all the way to the Pacific. Finally, as a kind of sputtering last gasp, the Saddle Mountains series covered areas of the Wanapum series in southeastern Washington and northern Oregon as well.

In all, we’re talking a total volume of around 52,800 cubic miles, covering an area of more than 77,220 square miles. Some single flows had volumes greater than 480 cubic miles. Clearly the Columbia Plateau Basalts are the North American equivalent of the Siberian Traps that may have contributed to the Permian-Triassic extinction (also known as The Great Dying), and the Deccan Traps in India that may have contributed to the Cretaceous Extinction (along with whatever hit Chixulub).

The other interesting fact mentioned in this edition that didn’t get mentioned in the first is the existence of McDermitt Caldera (pg. 234 map) as the oldest of the Yellowstone Hot Spot calderas. It is within the Steens Mountain area. For more on the theory, read Roadside Geology of Idaho.

Why am I so interested in the Columbia Plateau basalts? I grew up in Richland, Washington, and traveled around that part of Washington and Oregon. In some sense, my fascination with geology rises out of my childhood curiosity about what might cause flood basalts.

But there is much more to like about the 2nd Edition of RG Oregon, including all the color photos, the carefully drawn geological maps, the updated application of plate tectonics theory to how Oregon grew through the addition of terranes accreted from elsewhere as the North American Continent has expanded westward since the North Atlantic began to open back during the Triassic Period, and the fact that Oregon appears to have been rotated clockwise about 70 degrees since the first terranes were accreted probably beginning around 100 million years ago or more. Also of value is the discussion of the Missoula Floods during the last Ice Age. These caused the Channeled Scablands in Eastern Washington, left huge sandbars in places you’d never expect them up and down the Columbia River, and large rocks in the Willamette Valley that could only have come from Montana or Alberta Canada. You can read all about them in “Glacial Lake Missoula and Its Humongous Floods,” also by David Alt.

For anyone with an interest in the geology underlying the scenery you see out your car windows when you drive around this great nation of ours, I highly recommend the Roadside Geology series, as well as the Geology Underfoot series by Mountain Press. And I encourage the editors at Mountain Press to update more of their books, especially Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas (and any of the others that haven’t been upgraded to full color).

I can hardly wait till there’s a Roadside Geology book for every state in the union because reading them is almost as good as visiting those states for those as can’t, and greatly increases the enjoyment of visiting by providing an understanding of how the land forms beyond your car windows came to be the way they are.

Worthy and much needed successor
By abcd
For years I have been hoping for an updated Roadside Geology guide to Oregon. This book lives up to my expectations and is worth purchasing even if you already have the old version. That first edition, by Alt & Hyndman, is nearly 40 years old now. It was the very first Roadside book, I think, and they deserve plenty of credit for kicking off the genre. Since then, however, the science has advanced a lot, as has book printing technology, and so has the Roadside series. Alt and Hyndman went pretty easy and light on details, but experience has shown the publishers that people actually do want more. The recent guide to Massachusetts, for example, is much longer than the Oregon book, despite MA being a tiny state and less rich in geological wonders.

The new guide by Miller lives up to the current standard for the series. It probably has twice the word count of the A&H book (more pages, and less white space), covers several roads they left out (e.g., OR218 through the interesting Clarno/John Day region) lots of detailed, color geological maps using standard formation names, as well as helpful color photos, including a bunch of aerial shots that give context to what you'll see from the road. Reflects the state of the science today. In some areas that just means details have been fleshed out. The big story, though, is the understanding we now have of terrane accretion -- how much of Oregon was assembled over the last 200M years from chunks of land that plate tectonics brought in from faraway places.

A very minor gripe is that I wish Miller had given a nod to Alt and Hyndman somewhere, such as the acknowledgements section. True, her book not an 'update', she clearly wrote from a clean slate, but it still would have been gracious to do so.

Another great series addition
By Shelbie Knight
This book takes on a new slant in the Supernatural Bonds' series in that this one introduces a demon who happens to have the ability (and need) to change between the sexes.

Since I do not like writing reviews that give away the story, I will simply say that the human male in this story, the other part of the equation, happens to be 100% alpha male himself. From there, that gives you a good clue as to where this story possibly goes. Of course there is always the villains that are written in her stories as well, the agonist to the antagonist well balanced, leaving you with a desire to keep reading to see who will succeed and who will succumb.

I have, thus far, enjoyed this entire series (this is Book 7) and I am starting Book 8, Dragon Games next. I usually recommend that people start at the beginning of a series, but in this series I would highly recommend that you do. The characters are linked from story to story, reappearing in the books as you go, so to get a true picture of this universe that Jory Strong has created start at Book 1. If that is not an option for yo this can certainly be read as a stand-alone.

I enjoy the fact that Jory has an actual story as the foundation of her books in this series, rather than reading from one sex scene to the next. The combination allows for a good story experience that is, at times, extremely visual and stimulating at the same time.

Enjoy the story! :)

The Duality of Succubi and Incubi
By TeraS
The story is, at least to me, a fascinating one. It is the duality of what Succubi and Incubi are in one interpretation, that being a single being that can take both female and male forms and switch between the two of them at will... That's something that hasn't been written about very much and is a refreshing change of story ideas to me.

Miguel is a police detective in a world where supernatural beings exist side by side with humanity. They look like humans, they have jobs and lives much like humans, but they also have to deal with their supernatural abilities which can make things interesting at the least and troublesome in the extreme. His friends are supernatural or supernatural/human mixes, though he is not fully aware of all that goes on around him until he becomes involved with Ianthe.

Ianthe is a Succubus. She has been in this world before and forced into doing some evil things by her master at that time, but she has broken free and Miguel accidentally summons her. It turns out that only he could have because of the needs he has within him and what Ianthe is.

Ianthe is both male and female. Incubus and Succubus. And she is exactly what Miguel needs in order to find happiness in his life. Tat realization takes some time and Ianthe and her male form Ian make things more complicated. Miguel's friends also doubt Ianthe's promise that she does not want to hurt him and that makes things more complicated still, though eventually she does find friends and defenders that if not support her, at least understand her.

There are male/male and male/female sexual situations of course, but they are not the point of the story. Of course they are hot and need to be there to move the story along, but the story is not one sex scene after the next.

It is a thoughtful exploration of what it means to know oneself. Who you are, what you are, and why you are.

That's cryptic, but needs to be as the story is so focused on that theme that revealing more of it would be doing a disservice to the work...

I give it four and a half pitchforks out of five.

The one thing that I miss in the work is that Ianthe in both forms has no horns or tail. That's not much to be disappointed in, and really other than that the work is enthralling, well written and I think well worth reading for anyone that wants to see another view of Succubi and Incubi that isn't what you would expect...

Fascinating read
By Jennifer Kiziah
The idea of an incubus and succubus as the same being is not one I'd read about before, so that was new and intriguing. Demon Familiar is part of the Supernatural Bonds series and I was glad Miguel finally got his story. It's erotica, so there's a lot of sex, and there is some m/m sex, so if that's not your thing, then you probably wouldn't like this story. That said, Ianthe and Miguel together are explosive and I really enjoyed their story.

Okay at best
By Charles Gonnello
As a biomechanics and Injury prevention specialist, I specialize in corrective exercise and have made a successful career out of it. I am always looking for new information and books to expand my knowledge of the human body. I was looking for a bit more than what this book provided. I was originally drawn in by the amazing reviews (even before the book was released). Which is awfully suspicious. Regardless, I'd figure I'd see what all of the hype is about. As a practitioner, I am more interested in causation and correction, less in just what looks( or doesn't look) right. This book provided very little of what I was looking for and I'd recommend several other, more detailed books before this one, if you are interested in injury prevention. The book was filled with errors, that was easy for someone like myself to pick out quickly.

Pros: Solid info on 'smashing', picked up some new stuff.

Cons: Lack of detailed explanations
Errors in simple understandings of human mechanics
Heavily influenced by Crossfit propaganda
Little info on causation

Recommendations: NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist
Movement-Gray Cook
Pain-Free Program-Anthony Carey
Advances in Functional Training-Mike Boyle

On Balance OK
By Michael Weinstein
I was initially surprised that on the day of publication +200 five star reviews hit Amazon for this book and it strikes a little more balance is required.

While I subscribe to much of what the author puts forth and on balance this is a worthwhile resource there are some real pros and cons...

Among the pros is the philosophy, comprehensiveness and generally easy to read style that is at times conversational in a positive manner.

There are some major cons. Starting with the fact that there is no index -- are you kidding me. This matters as for many I suspect this will serve more as a resource than read it once and absorb everything. Second issue is that it is very dense in material. This makes synthesizing things a challenge at times as we are left to figure them out on your own. I suspect many more lay or casual athletes will give up due to this. I could only read a chapter, or so, at a time. Pictures are okay but a tie to all the videos on his site would be much better. When dealing with movement still pictures aren't the same. I also would have liked to have seen a chapter relating sporting activities to the motions and mobility they require and the issues they tend to raise.

One other important point. Prior to publication of the book mobilitywod.com, the author's web site, was a free blog. It is pushed heavily in the reviews and in the book. It is now a for pay site. Fair enough, it doesn't need to be free but it is a material turnoff to link the two in the way it has been done.

So, I recommend this more for a trainer, serious athlete, and less for the casual athlete who arguably this should be most useful for.

Decent, but not the be-all end-all
By Rik
Before we start, yes, this is freaking long. I know. I originally wrote this for people at Reddit, and only made a few minor edits for Amazon.

First off, a squabble with how the book was published: I ended up paying 50 euros to purchase the book and get it shipped over here, at Amazon.com, which is a US-based website. This is odd because I live in the Netherlands, so it would've made much more sense to order at Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de, but then I would've paid 50 euros for just the book sans the shipping. This is odd and in dire need of correction.

On Amazon, all you read are rave reviews of how the book will change your life and will instantly make you the healthiest human being on the planet and all that... well, I don't believe in magic bullets, and neither should you. Don't take this as me saying the book isn't good; it is and there are definitely a lot of things I've learnt from it. However, I don't think it's the be-all-end-all of fitness books.

Overall, the book is well-written; very digestible writing. However, I can see that if you're new to this, you'll probably have a hard time on some parts, and will be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. Because there is a lot of information: there are 32 individual movements described, ranging from a basic air squat to a muscle-up and there are over a 150 pages describing specific mobility techniques.

The book starts of with an introduction, which, as expected, is Kelly banging his own drum loudly for a couple pages; there is no real info there. From there on out, the book is divided up into roughly three parts:

* Introduction to/Explanation of the movement and mobility system: this explains Kelly's general rules for movement, mainly concerning spinal organisation and bracing.
* Movement system details: this discusses how to execute specific movements, as well as spotting mobility restrictions.
* Mobility system details: this discusses how to alleviate mobility restrictions.

The idea is that you can skip to either the second or the third part and start working on becoming a Supple Leopard right away, but that reading the second part provides you with a picture of how to integrate the two systems. That's the idea, at least. Skipping to the second or third part more feels like visiting the old mobilityWOD site: you have a bunch of movements and mobilizations, and you know kind of which mobilization is supposed to improve which movement, but it's not really a system; or at least, it doesn't feel that way. I'd say it's pretty good, but to get the whole picture you really need to read the whole book.

The main problems I had with this book popped up in the first section. It's fine throughout the introduction, but then it comes to a 4-step diagram on how to assume neutral-braced-spinal position, which is the very first thing the book teaches you other than "the gym is your lab". The first step is okay, but then the second step tells you to align your pelvis and ribcage by pulling the lower ribs down. Now, I know pretty well what that last thing feels like, but I had and still have no clue whether I was overdoing it or not. There is a thing called the two-hand rule a bit later on, but that was no help either as it doesn't work if your starting position isn't correct.
Despite these pitfalls, I spent a couple of days as a posture nazi; just hoping my ribcage was aligned well, and it definitely feels pretty good: when I had a symposium on friday and ended up with lower back pain from sitting all days, organizing myself into a neutral-braced position helped significantly. However, I did get a bit sore the first two days from having to brace your abs all the time, and I don't think it's entirely necessary to stay braced every nanosecond of your existence despite the book telling you to. Moreover, I felt like some of my shoulder issues were aggravated during those couple of days, but maybe that was a result of my complete lack of regard for ribcage positioning because I did not know what to do with it.

After the whole spinal organization management ordeal, the book goes on to explain the "laws of torque". In my mind, torque is something to do with forces and lever-arms, so I was expecting something to do with forces and lever-arms, but instead the first rule is: "externally rotate your shoulders/hips to generate torque!" That is, if your legs or arms are in flexion. In extension, you simply "Internally rotate your shoulders/hips to generate torque!"
Now I kind of understand where this came from: force generation at a joint is actually torque generation, in the sense that the muscle attaches to somewhere on the bone beyond the joint, creating a lever, and putting your joints in the right position so that the lever-arms are optimized and torque at the joint is at a maximum and so force at the object you're trying to move is at a maximum. However, no explanation of the sort is present and it starts getting ridiculous when the book starts saying things like "improper movement patterns bleeds torque", and "this is a huge torque dump". Torque this, torque that. It's a buzzword that serves no use whatsoever, you can shove it up your ass for all I care.
Speaking of buzzwords, there's more. Like "mobilizing". "We shouldn't stretch, we should mobilize!" Sounds like something really revolutionary, until you learn that "mobilize" means "stretch and foam roll". Why can't you just call it "stretching and foam rolling"? Because it puts people in the wrong state of mind? If it's truly as effective as you claim it is, it'll be seen by people regardless.
Again, despite the flaws I gave it a shot, and I must say, it works really well. My shoulders feel a lot more stable if I externally rotate at the top of a pushup or at the bottom of a row. However, I also feel it puts the long head of my biceps under stretch if I overdo it (which I tend to do with mobility elements), which is a bad thing because I have been dealing with tendonitis of the head for a bit.

Next it goes into detailing specific movements, like squatting, pushups and pullups. These are meant as a "movement template". There isn't a description of ring rows anywhere since it's producing force while your body is horizontal, so the rules for the pushup apply. Normally I'd say this is a bad thing, but it actually works pretty well and it cuts down on the content a lot.
The movements are divided into three categories, each one a bit more complex than the previous. The system is pretty intuitive, but I wouldn't have had any complaints if the movements were just put on one big heap.
One qualm I have with this section pertains to a specific movement: the handstand pushup. Most notably, the freestanding handstand pushup. First off, the thing demonstrated is called a "headstand pushup" which isn't a huge complaint because laypeople call it a handstand pushup anyway, but I think the distinction is important. Second, most of the movements have some sort of progression via movements detailed earlier, but this thing doesn't. There's not a word on proper handstands and the only tip the book gives on achieving the freestanding HSPU is to do wall-supported HSPU with your back to the wall, which promotes flaring your elbows and arching your back, which is exactly what you don't want to do. Didn't like this part much. The rest of the section is pretty decent, though.
Only thing I'm not so sure about it shoving the knees out when squatting. It does help me personally because I tend to let my knees cave inwards during a squat, but it looks like the extreme amount of knees-out demonstrated in the book will just hurt your knees, so I don't know what to think about that yet.

It finishes up with the mobility elements. This is about half the book and it's basically a bunch of stretches and ways to foam roll various parts of the body, mostly using a couple of lacrosse balls, but most hard round objects work: I did most of the work using a tennis ball instead of a lacrosse ball and old inner tubing for a bike as resistance band. It's all very decent and yields results quickly, but I have yet to see permanent change that lasted more than a couple of hours. This was also my experience with the stuff I picked up from the mobilityWOD website. When I was having elbow issues ("hot elbow" as mr Starrett calls it) I tried out "elbow voodoo" (just look it up on YouTube) and all my pain went away... for a couple of hours, that is.
It may just take some more time, and I do feel that digging into my posterior shoulder with a tennis ball really helps improve pain, but overall I think the whole magic bullet-image that BASL's mobility elements have is way overblown. Yes, they work for a bit, but after the first couple hours it's back to regular, or at least it feels that way.
Also, I think they understated the rule "if it feels sketchy, it is probably sketchy and you shouldn't do it". The mobility techniques can be somewhat painful at times, and while working on my general knee area, I started getting a weird sensation at the shin while moving my foot around, and after that a weird sensation around the patellar tendon. Instead of backing off, I explored those sensations and ended up with a painful knee, as if the meniscus was displaced for a bit. My knee is okay now, but since then I'm a bit more careful with mobilizing things. It's something I should've kept in mind from the get-go, though.

All in all, I already said it in the beginning: it's decent, but it's not the book written by god because Jesus had low back-pain from not producing enough torque at the hips.

TL;DR: Here's the short version:

* If you live in Europe, it's probably cheaper to order from Amazon.com rather than Amazon.de or Amazon.co.uk. This is weird.
* Easy reading, but there is a lot of info.
* If you don't read the book as a whole, it's kind of disorganized.
* I still don't know what a proper ribcage position looks like and the rule further in the book doesn't help much either, despite this being one of the very first things you're supposed to learn.
* The ideal posture described in the book feels pretty good, but I'm not sure it's as paramount during daily life as the book says.
* The use of the word "torque" is annoying, as is saying "mobilize" rather than "stretch and foam roll" as if it's an entirely different thing.
* Actually doing what the book says about the laws of torque is very effective, though.
* Handstand pushup section sucks, but the rest of the movements are described effectively.
* It looks like the mobility elements are more temporary fixes rather than permanent fixes
* Don't go too hard on the mobility stuff

TAKE HOME MESSAGE: It's decent, but it's not the be-all-end-all like everyone would have you believe.

***This is book two in the series. It is novella length. This book is naughty so you've been warned.***

Edith Merriweather has done deplorable things in her past, including breaking her younger sister’s heart by betraying her in the most unforgiveable way. Edith is ready to come clean and beg for forgiveness when a handsome stranger enters her life.

He offers her an escape from reality, where she is destined to be a poor, single woman for the rest of her years. This man entices her with a contract she simply cannot refuse.

The great Earl of Havering, Alexander Dumont, has chosen to wed Edith.

But not because the playboy loves her. No, Alexander needs a wife in order to convince his father that he’s settled down and capable of inheriting their exorbitant amount of wealth. He promises to lavish Edith with his riches and indulge her in any desire she could ever want, including allowing her to have as many lovers as she so pleases. And the most appealing part of it all is she’ll also become a countess.

Together, Alexander and Edith conspire to pull off one of the greatest deceptive acts of their time.

Somewhere along the way, though, the lines of their faux marriage become blurred and something altogether foreign enters the picture.

Love.

Will becoming Countess Dumont weaken Edith’s heart, which she’s always kept protected under a hard, callous outer shell? And if Alexander breaks her vulnerable heart, will she be able to continue the sham of their marriage or reveal the falsehood to his father?

My God what passes for a historic romance!!!
By Amazon Customer
Maybe this book does not deserve such low rating-others seem to have loved it, so maybe this book simply isn’t my cup of tea.
I gave it such low rating because it is the first historic novel I didn’t bother finishing and I have read thousands- some very poorly written.
The writing isn’t bad- the author is clearly talented, articulate and eloquent.
I hated it cause it was a historic romance novel that was neither historic nor romance, nor a novel (it kind of reads like a series or excerpts from H and h’s diaries, in which they relive their sexual encounters and occasionally analyze their developing feelings).
Our heroine is at odds with her younger sister, because she screwed her sister’s ex-boyfriend repeatedly, while they attended a university together- give me a break, a university.
And she screwed him where- in her dorm room- My God!!!! (ok the author never mentioned the dorm room, I just assumed- cause where else would a lady in a corset be alone with a gentlemen, while attending the same university-whatever).
Then she marries our H (in a business transaction) and after that for 6 months they each proceed to screw other people day in and day out, until one merry morning, having just arrived to his parent’s estate, they discover that they prefer to screw each other instead, and they continue to do so, day in and day out-for the rest of the book.
The elderly mother faints a few times- so I presume that someone gets ill, or some other twist of faith happens- but I will never know, cause I abandoned the book, and removed it from my Kindle.

K. Webster has done it again!!!
By Tiffany Williams
"I slide a palm up her cheek and stroke her gently. This shouldn't feel so comfortable. However, I find myself relaxing and losing consciousness as I hold this woman. My wife.
When did things change?"

Holy WOW!!
After I read Becoming Lady Thomas, I was hooked! I had to know what happened to Edith and Alexander. Their story was just what I'd hoped it would be! Even if they started out as just an agreement, it didn't take long to see more in each other's eyes. Maybe it was something they saw all along, but didn't want to believe it.

When reading the first book, I thought Edith was very spoiled and didn't seem to truly care about her sister's feelings. This book showed that Edith is much more fragile than she led on. She was actually broken, but was strong enough to push through it all. I found myself loving her!

"A woman like myself really could fall for a man like him. She wouldn't even have to try that hard."

Alexander. Whoa, buddy! That man is mysterious, sexy, sweet, and he loves his mama! That's a plus! Ha!
Did I mention sexy? Because Lawd!!
The best thing I liked about him was that he also was fighting an internal battle -- a battle of acceptance from his family. He was now ready to prove his worth and Edith was his perfect partner.

"It will have to be us against them."

The more time Edith and Alexander spent together, the more they realized the attraction couldn't be denied. Trust me. The heat was melting off the pages. I found myself fanning my face quite a few times! I swear, I think that words sound even more sexy when the story is set back in time!
K. Webster knows how to write a historical romance!!

"This man makes no sense to me. I hate him, yet...I don't. I simply don't. In fact, I crave more of him. I crave the urge to slap him and then let him screw me senseless."

"Edith infuriates me yet turns me on. She is crazier than any loon at an asylum, yet I want to keep her as mine."

I'm telling you!!! This book was just great! I loved getting to know Edith and Alexander more, meeting his family, and getting to see Elizabeth and Jasper again. These characters have settled in my brain and I NEED MORE!!

I will sit by and *patiently* wait for the next book. I'm counting down the days! Keep these historical romances coming Mrs. Webster! You truly have a gift for them:)

"He thinks he'll have to pleasure me to get me to crave him. Well, he's incorrect in that thinking.
I'm already hopelessly addicted to him."

"It baffles me how this woman was just as lonely and lost as I was six months ago. And now? Now, we're each other's everything."

A stunning continuation of the Becoming Her series.
By EscapeNBooks
"I'll love you until I'm ashes in the dirt beneath the Earth. Then, I'll love you even more."

How do you go into a book despising a character and come out giddy and loving them? It JUST happened! K. Webster always writes multi-dimensional and appealing characters in all of her stories, but this one packed a surprise punch that I did not expect. In Becoming Lady Thomas, I set my mind to detest Edith. That thought quickly evaporated in Becoming Countess Dumont and was replaced with empathy. As has been said in other famous literature, "The game is afoot." But, in the game there are winners and losers, and Edith is afraid of which she will become.
"I feel as if I'm drawn to you like a fly to honey. Your magnetism allures me in a way that confuses me. But I crave it nonetheless."

The trials of new marriage are hard enough without adding more weight from the past and present. We are originally introduced to Alexander and Edith in Becoming Lady Thomas, Book 1 of the Becoming Her series. Edith is Elizabeth’s older sister. Alexander is Jasper’s friend and confidante. Edith is jaded. To her, love is a facade. Nothing more than words. And she is none too innocent in proving this outcome. She has had her own fair share of mischievousness, and our eyes become enlightened to exactly what depth her deceit has travelled. Alexander doesn't quite know what to do with a woman like Edith. But he won't tolerate others treating her in an ill manner. He has a mixed state of emotions with her, causing us to wonder how this couple can possibly make this crazy scheme work. Together they are fire and ice. Both fierce elements, seemingly working against one another, but both from the same thread in life. We are taken from one extreme of emotions to the other in this read, coming to the conclusion that love saves, awakens, and renews.
"This is the most delicious thing I have ever tasted, Alexander.I could lick up every morsel and never be satisfied for I would always crave more."

Becoming Countess Dumont was crafted in typical K. Webster fashion. It was hot, sexy, snarky, and full of love; everything in a book that makes my heart happy . Edith and Alexander's story was another beautiful addition to her historical romance collection. Outside of their relationship, Edith also developed a fondness for another character in the story, which, in my opinion was one of the most beautiful developments. I felt like it solidified her path with definitive direction. There were so many moments that just made me stop and smile with a goofy grin on my face. The fast pace of the story and moments of retrospect made me fall further in love with every word on each page.

"You filled a part of me that was incomplete. Without you, I'm nothing."

More Traditional Romance Than Others In The Series
By Sheila M
HER PRODIGAL PASSION is the fourth book in the Mayhem in Mayfair series. It is the story of Paul Fines, the brother of Percy from HER WANTON WAGER. Paul almost destroyed himself with gambling and alcohol after losing the woman that he loved. He is now beginning to rebuild his life. Charity Sparkler has known Paul for years. He is her best friend's brother. Charity has loved Paul for years but he has barely noticed her. At a house party, Paul begins to notice Charity as both are searching for meaning in their lives. Caught in a compromising situation, the two end up married but have to work out their life together.

I liked this book. It was more traditional than the other books in the series. The other books were very, very hot. This book was more subdued. Paul and Charity are both people who have been damaged by the expectations of others. Both are dismissed by others and have internalized a negative self image. As a result, their marriage is very difficult because they each expect to be disappointed. There are many misunderstandings that harm their marriage. At times, I became frustrated by the inability of these characters to trust one another but I also understood that this was a part of their characters and journey. They each needed to realize that they were worthy of their relationship.

I also enjoyed seeing the couples from the previous books in the series. While it is not necessary to have read the previous books in the series, I think fans of the series will like this book better because it ties up the story from the previous books.

End to the Mayhem
By J Devoe
I've read all 4 of the Mayhem books and this is probably my least favorite of the four, even though I was sooooooo excited when it came out. I felt like I was waiting forever!

I was really excited to see how Paul and Charity's story would unfold, but I was a little disappointed. I'm a bit of a sucker for "unrequited love" getting an actual chance, but Charity was hard to like the more I got to know her. She has serious daddy issues and while I do understand that practicality was part of her personality, I didn't always feel like she supported Paul the way she should have if she had been in love with him forever. Paul, bless his hear, was just annoying at points. I almost wanted to check to make sure he hadn't regressed to an angry toddler at times for not getting his way or not being able to be flaky toward people who depended on him.

Like the other Mayhem books, there are several scenes that are, um, "steamy"....but that's not really a strong enough word. Very detailed and a little rougher/detailed than other regency romances.

I would still recommend the book; but, like most, there were things I wish were a bit different about it.

Sad to see the series end...
By J-Phi
I've read this entire series and I have to admit I'm sad to see it end. Grace Callaway is my favourite new regency/Victorian writer hands down!

Having bought the previous books on a whim, I didn't originally plan to get this one based on the reviews of it which told me it would be annoying. I was led to believe that Charity would be unlikeable and that Paul would be whiny and unable to get over himself. This couldn't be FURTHER from the truth. Jack and Charity are imperfect emotionally (obviously in this series, like in others despite being plump or very slender or not classically beautiful, all the heroines are blessed with an excess of good looks deep down!) but this author, like in her previous books in the series, explores and reveals the reasons for their emotional issues in a very meaningful and useful way. Grace Callaway allows the characters to be just emo an needy enough that they play on our sympathies and that we can identify with their flaws but not so much that it gets whiny or annoying.

One thing I really liked is that in this novel, despite their disagreements, there wasn't a lot of cutting ones' nose to spite ones' face by the heroines. The arguments and disagreements didn't last very long. Neither Charity and Jack are too stubborn for love (TSFL). They see faults in themselves and their behavior pretty quickly and don't feel they are always the injured party. They seek out opportunities to apologize and truly you feel the love between them. If they are a little stupid at times, who isn't?!

I really enjoyed this. I wish there was more. I've heard there's a related novella in the Summer anthology the novel is in so I'm definitely getting that. This author has one more book not in this series but it's a paranormal historical (Abigail Jones) and I'm not that into that genre. But this is such a great author that I think anything she wrote is bound to be good so I might try out that series as well.
