Great Book for Newcomers and Prince2 Foundation Material

Background- I am a Cisco professional with about 4 years experience in administration and engineering.

I was interested in a certification with project management and read this while waiting for my Prince2 manual to come in. I finished half the book and it definitely helped me get into Prince2 topics and familiar with the elements.

When my manual came in, I was overwhelmed by the information it contained. Prince2 For Beginners is great, covers most of the topics you need and will make you confident in learning the stuff. I passed my exam, I would of definitely done better if I read the whole book front to back. Take notes while you read this book and you'll be golden with some practice on the side.

Absolutely Hilarious

Short version: Twilight fans will probably enjoy it; Twilight lolfans and haters will love to hate it. Either way, it's worth checking out.

Long Version:

Okay. This book is not, in actual fact, any good. At all. HOWEVER, it is a thing of beauty and a joy forever because it is incredibly funny in its ridiculousness. As soon as I heard about it I was instantly sold and have been waiting anxiously for months to get my hands on a copy.

Here's what you need to know: The book apparently takes place in an alternate universe in which the Cthulhu Mythos, rather than being a set of stories written by H.P. Lovecraft, was a real ancient mythology. This mythos is studied academically in modern times, but isn't really part of popular knowledge or culture. Our main character Andromeda (yes, really) has a strange dream about a beautiful boy and a terrifying sea creature. She shrugs it off, but a few days later the boy from her dream shows up at her high school. Riley, stilted of speech and inhumanly beautiful of countenance, seems simultaneously angered and fascinated by poor 'boring' Andi. What could it mean???

Right now you might be thinking, wow, that sure sounds like Twilight-but-with-Cthulhu. And you would be absolutely correct.

If you've ever read a detailed critique of Twilight or its many knock-offs (Awoken seems to take quite a bit of inspiration from Hush Hush as well), you already know what there is to dislike about this book. The love story is contrived and borderline abusive. The main character has little personality beyond 'whiny'. The antagonists are boring and one-dimensional. Etc, etc.

And yet...this is, in a way, the ultimate fantasy of its kind. Vampires and werewolves are ultimately strong humans; angels and fairies and whatnot are more than regular people, but generally written to be very human as well. In Awoken, a lot of time is spent pointing out just how inhuman and ~above humanity~ Riley is. He (spoilers?) literally has the power to initiate the end of the world. And yet he will prevent that destruction, because of his deep and abiding love for ordinary Andi. The all-out embracing of the tropes is, as I noted above, deeply hilarious.

Also, shout-out to Riley's 'Uncle Neil' (Nyarlathotep), a minor character in the story who basically steals the whole damn book right around the time that he calls Riley 'Jolly Green Giant'. If Serra Elinsen writes a ten-book series about the adventures of Uncle Neil and his curio/cultist supply shop 'Crawling Chaos', I will buy and read every one.

In the tradition of The Fisherman's Wife and Calamari Wrestler, this novel explores what it's truly like for a woman to love a cephalopod. But unlike these earlier works, it plumbs the depths of the madness of Cthulu, while never leaving behind the joys and lightheartedness of first love.

Could this be the next Twilight? The next Fifty Shades of Grey?

Miss Elinsen's novel Awoken is the most heartfelt book I've ever read this year. I can feel the love and heart that was poured into this book, the love between Riley and Andi is so good gives me tears. And I just LOVE Uncle Neil, he is so awesome it makes me wish I could have an uncle like him! This book became quickly one of my favorites, along with Phantom of the Opera and I cannot wait for more from Miss Serra Elinsen, if you can I would say read this book as soon as you can!!

Odom's convoluted, wordy and dry writing style unfortunately muddles his in-depth expertise knowledge of networking, i.e. repeated usage of the same words (define and function) within the same long sentence sometime 2-3 times! Consequently, what can be articulated eloquently within a page instead drags on for several pages. After a month of slogging through the book, I discovered, belatedly, that the accompanying CD had light wears (as expected) but also one visible crack on the back rendering it unusable!

For anyone wondering this is the newest version for the 3.0 test published in 2016. The book was a little bit roughed up and smelled funny but it did travel all the way from India. Haven't yet tried the online material. If you want to save some cash this is the way to go, table of contents are exactly the same as non-international version.

The man unpacked his valise and put things in a drawer of the chiffonier, then hung his Price Albert coat� in the closet.� When he turned from the closet he was in shirt and vest. The boy's eyes rounded.� Sewn to each side of the vest was a holster, reversed, and in each holster was a pistol, butt forward.� As he watched, sucking in his breath, the man took the weapons out, revolved the cylinders, filled a chamber in one he had evidently fired,and replaced them before hanging the vest, too, in the closet.�The pistols were a pair of nickel-plated, short-barreled, unsighted, single-action .44 Remingtons, obviously manufactured to order.�The handle of one was black gutta-percha, the other pearl.

One of the top three best westerns ever

I would put this book up there with "Lonesome Dove" and "The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales" as one of the best westerns I've ever read. I have owned several copies of this book since I was in high school (1977) and have always enjoyed reading it. The book has a sad air to it, considering the circumstances of its hero, J.B. Books. I have almost come to tears several times while reading it, when I put myself in Books' shoes.
Some of the best lines in Western fiction are in this book:
"..I would not die a death such as I have described." "No?" "I would not. Not if I had your courage. I would not. And especially your skill with weapons." (conversation between Dr. Hostetler and J.B. Books)
"Day after tomorrow," he said. "When you see me then, in my Sunday duds, there will be no tears." (J.B. Books to Bond Rogers)
To overuse a cliche, if you read one western, "The Shootist" should be it.

Its all in the way it is presented

If you think about it, its hard to make a western very intriguing and original, but some authors have an awesome way of putting words together for the enjoyment of the reader. The story itself is good but not extraordinary, but the way its put together and that characterization is what makes it special. It is a very good book !!

Great Western Novel

I saw the John Wayne movie for the first time, recently (don't know what took me so long). I was impressed with it, and it interested me in reading the book. I just finished it, and it is truly one of the best westerns I have ever read: a great story, economically told. While the movie is generally true to the book, there are some differences. I found the book to be more hard-edged and graphically violent than the film. The Gillom Rogers character (played by a young Ron Howard in the film) was portrayed differently in the book: a lot meaner. I actually preferred his character in the book, as it added a certain symmetry and logic to the storyline. Overall, a great book that asks the question: How do you want to go out?
