An adventure into the Northern regions of Queensland, both fascinating and dangerous unforseen events.

Once again when reading Di Morrissey stories you are transported into the story. This time we are taken to Queensland northern regions, Cooktown, the Daintree rainforest and it's colourful residents. We hear about the history of early settlers, imigrants and tales of their lives. All this while experiencing the search for a brother by his sister and their adventures in this fascinating region. Thank you Di for another great adventure.

EASY and ENJOYABLE

Di Morrissey's writing is without doubt the most careful investigator of terrain and history of her topic. She knows her country well and describes it's people and their customs with authority. A littler slow in places, never-the-less a very enjoyable and easy read.

The time was ripe then when an international workshop dedicated to the physical oceanography of the Adriatic Sea was convened in Trieste on 21-25 September 1998. Its objectives were to assess the current knowledge of the oceanography of the Adriatic Sea, to review the newly acquired observations, to create syn� ergy between model simulations and observations, and to identify directions for future Adriatic oceanography. This book, however,is not the mere proceedings of the workshop. It was written as a monograph synthetizing the current knowledge of the physical oceanography of the Adriatic Sea, with the hope that it will serve as a reference to anyone interested in the Adriatic. The book also identifies topics in need of additional inquiry and proposes research directions for the next decade.

This rollicking, highly original first novel tells the story (in reverse chronological order) of four sisters and their family, as they become Americanized after fleeing the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. A family of privilege in the police state they leave, the Garcias experience understandable readjustment problems in the United States, particularly old world patriarch Papi. The sisters fare better but grow up conscious, like all immigrants, of living in two worlds. There is no straightforward plot; rather, vignettes (often exquisite short stories in their own right) featuring one or more of the sisters--Carle, Sandi, Yolanda, and Fifi--at various stages of growing up are strung together in a smooth, readable story. Alvarez is a gifted, evocative storyteller of promise.

Doesn't Make It

Alas, the novel is difficult to follow. Characters are not alive in the pages: Papi appears as a cartoon of an inflexible patriarch, Mami a rather boring and trite nightmare mother, the girls difficult to distinguish. When the narrative lapses into stream of consciousness prose, the reader is left trying to understand when, where, and who is streaming. Early on I was engaged by the tale, but quickly became tired of bickering, undifferentiated characters. Like each of the daughters, I would want out of this family. This type of structure, moving from one viewpoint and setting to another, requires discipline and skill, and I don't think Julia Alvarez is up to the task in this attempt. Also, in this Kindle edition, there are scanning errors. I become less and less tolerant of this as I read more and more in the e-format. At $0.00 cost one might thing it's unfair to complain, but if the work is worth publishing, it's worth taking care with the details.

Nothing Particularly Memorable

I'm feeling pretty ambivalent about this one - I didn't love or hate it. Don't read it if you are looking for a conventional novel with a forward-moving plot and lots of character development. Do read it if you like experimental novels that do quirky things.

The book is comprised of a series of related vignettes that move backwards in time. They are written with such a degree of verisimilitude that I suspect they are largely autobiographical. Some of the vignettes are more interesting than others. I personally enjoyed "The Rudy Elmenhurst Story" and "Daughter of Invention" best. Others struck me as superfluous fluff - a quick way to add padding to a few really well-written essays so the whole lot could get published as a novel.

When I finished the book, I felt neither inspired nor annoyed. It was entertaining at times, boring at others. It certainly wasn't a waste of time, but I doubt I'll remember it in a year. Upon finishing the last page, I just blinked a few times and put it back on the shelf.

How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent is a great book that tells the story of a family that has to completely change their way of life. The Garcia girls are from the Dominican Republic and live a pretty comfortable life. This changes after their father gets into a bit of legal trouble. The girls and their mother are forced to flee to the United States of America where their life style is a complete change and their social status is no longer as promising as it was in the Dominican Republic. This book was required for my thematic approaches to literature class and I would recommend it to any student that is interested in reading about families that migrate to the United States

Forced to emigrate by straitened economic conditions, he journeyed to the Pacific Northwest intending to find work as a lumberjack. The Man Who Changed Rowing Forever

Anyone who rows or watches rowing will find this book edifying. The story of George Pocock is an amazing one. The man changed the sport by building the most technologically advanced shells of his time. His shells virtually dominated rowing from coast to coast and were used by several Olympic champion crews. Yet he always said there are no fast boats, just fast crews. Pocock's son followed in his footsteps, continuing to build the world's finest shells on the shores of Lake Union in Seattle. It is not by accident that the University of Washington has been dominant in collegiate rowing for many years. Go Dawgs!

I ran across this little & thin book of much information when I searched the web for "green minerals". I had found them in my unconsolidated soils and after checking my mineralogy text book wanted to do some cross-comparing. An excerpt came up and I read it, and then I knew that I had to have the whole thing. Its a good guide book.

A must have for people who do not want to spend $800 for the SHRM material

I didn't want to spend the $800 for the SHRM online material, so a friend recommended this book and I'm glad I took his advice. I used this book exclusively for studying for my SPHR exam and passed on the first try! Like some of the other reviewers said, it's a little wordy and can be confusing because information is repeated throughout the book, but if you're able to get past that and focus on the pertinent iformation, this is a great study guide because not only does it provide all the information that's in the SHRM material, but it goes further by providinig background information and "real life" stories and case studies to help with your comprehension of the material. The online tests and flash cards are also great tools.

The only negative that I have with the book is that it doesn't prepare you for the "type" of questions on the exam which are scenario based and highly subjective. To prepare for these typ of questions, I would recommend getting a study guide that has "test prep" questions with an explanation of the answers. I got one for $9.99 on Amazon, and it did an amazing job with preparing me with how to answer these type of questions.

Review of PHR/SPHR Study Guide

I come from a resourcing and recruitment background and decided to study for the PHR exam as a means to broaden my knowledge and add a qualification to my resume. I bought this book after great reviews by other users thinking that it could be used as the main basis upon which to study for the PHR exam. I read the book from cover to cover twice, condensed and summarized, took the chapter review tests and all the PHR online test practices that came with the accompanying DVD in which I was scoring full marks by the time it came for me to take the exam. I failed the exam yesterday and whilst I don't hold this book accountable for my performance, I would say to those who are using it without broad practical HR working experience and/or without the help of other study techniques, that you may find that it isn't enough. Most of the questions in my PHR exam were dissimilar to those in the book - sometimes using terminology I was unfamiliar with, and were often ambiguous where it was difficult to choose a 'best' answer because in the real world it would have depended so much on the situation. Some of the questions drilled down into detail that isn't covered in the book. I left the exam yesterday feeling disappointed and whilst as I say, I don't 'blame' the result on this book, I would like to warn students who do not have a breadth of personal HR experience not to pin all your studying on this one book.

Great Study Book - Only reason I passed

I bought this book because I didn't want to purchase the SHRM $800 plus study guide. I made notes from each chapter took all of the exams and read all of the answers in the appendix. The one thing I appreciate the most about this book was the answer keys. Each question not only gave you the answer but the reason why it was right and gave the definition or reason why the other answers were not correct. I really believed this helped me pass my exam because I was not only able to practice sample questions but also able to study the other terms in the same sitting.

The book is a bit wordy but I really liked the real life scenarios it had through out the chapters and if you are already working in HR (as you should) you can make your own real life connections to the text. What I did not like was the fact that the book repeated information through out the book. It would start talking about a topic and go more in depth in the following chapters.

My study method was to take notes from each chapter (read approx 10 pages a day M-F) then the last month prior to my exam I studied my notes chapter at a time M-W. Nine days before the exam I studied a chapter a day and ended each day with taking the chapter exam. I took the exam once checked my answers, then studied the answer key and retook the exam about 30-60 mins later. The next day I would take the exam again and study the next chapter, take that chapter's exam, study the answer key and retake the exam 30-60 mins later. The cycle repeated until I was done with chapters 2-8. On the day before the exam I retook every chapter exam; studied my notes from the first section of the book (essentially I had transcribed the answer key from the pre-test) and took the exam then I checked the answers and then retook the exam 30-60 mins later. I did not do too well on any of my first attempts and thought for sure I was going to fail my exam.

I am proud to say that I sat for my exam today and I passed. In order to pass you need an understanding of HR. Simply studying terms and court cases will not do it. This book will give you that and if you can embrace the knowledge and not simply learn for the sake of learning and passing the test this book should be all you need. I was unable to utilize any of the online tools this book offers because my computer is bobo and I was able to pass using only this book and the practice test it contains.
