About the Author
For the past two decades, Cecie Starr has been known as one of the best-selling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect. Instead of building houses, she now builds, with care and attention to detail, incredible texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Ralph Taggart, Former Chair of Biological Sciences at Michigan State University, Ralph Taggert is now the chair of Geological Sciences. Professor Taggart, known for his outstanding research in Paleobotany, has taught the general biology course for over 20 years.

Christine Evers has been creating multimedia and Web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. She earned her B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook. After working as a research assistant studying the developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied evolutionary biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

Lisa Starr earned her B.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of California at San Diego Revelle College in 1982. Over the next five years, she became expert in molecular and cell biology as she helped build a veterinary virology research program at the startup biotech firm Syntro (which was later spun off into Protein Polymer Technologies). During this time, Lisa invented the cDNA cloning kit and the mRNA isolation kit that launched Invitrogen (now part of Life Technologies). She left Syntro to launch a molecular biology division for a veterinary vaccine company (Synbiotics, later acquired by Pfizer Animal Health), and then spent seven years at The Scripps Research Institute investigating integrin isoform expression in development and cancer metastasis and training postdoctoral candidates. She was recruited to start up the biotech firm Ixsys/Applied Molecular Evolution (later acquired by Lilly) and to establish proof-of-concept for combinatorial library construction as well as antibody randomization/humanization at the fledgling firm. Prior to joining the Starr franchise, she was recruited to start up Desmos, another biotech firm, that was later spun off into Cythera/Novocell/ViaCyte. Since 1997, Lisa has been responsible for the incredible art in the Starr biology textbooks, and began authoring the books in 2004.

part one was so amazing that I couldn't put it down

Part two of an incredibly hot lesbian erotica trilogy! I don't always read on to part two, but in this case, part one was so amazing that I couldn't put it down!

Again, just amazingly relatable characters, lots of sexy scenes, and more of a storyline than one usually sees in shorts.

Highly recommend, can't wait to read more from this author!

New Beginnings

Written by an Indian author about a group of lesbians at a college in India. A small group of students hope to expand their lesbian group so that more "straight" girls who date dull Indian guys can become lesbians. The action is typically non-stop, with the usual lesbian climaxes. Nothing surprising, not particularly erotic. The author writes well, no weird sentence structures often found in Indian stories. It appears parents still try to match up their children in India, mostly for economic reasons, not love. This tradition is dying out. At this college, women are taught to assert their freedom.

Over the past 10 years or so, biblical critics have poked and prodded the canonical Gospels in an attempt to resurrect the historical Jesus for the late 20th century. Witherington (Jesus, the Sage, etc.) explores the stunning variety of portraits of the Nazarene drawn by contemporary critics from John Dom Crossan to John P. Meier. By way of introduction, he suggests the resemblances of this so-called "third quest" for the historical Jesus to the earlier quests of late-19th and mid-20th century scholars to locate the Jesus of history behind the Christ of faith. In addition, Witherington argues here that any portrait of Jesus succeeds or fails according to the extent to which it recognizes the fundamental character of his Jewish self-identity. Each chapter assesses the strengths and weaknesses of particular contemporary understandings of Jesus. For instance, the methods and conclusions of the Jesus Seminar are attacked as spurious and ahistorical, while Meier and his monumental A Marginal Jew are praised for properly locating the life and work of Jesus in their Jewish context. Witherington provides a good overview of recent Jesus scholarship. Unfortunately, it's too often overshadowed by the fact that, when differing from other scholars, his tone is unjustifiably combative and sometimes pejorative.

sound conservative scholarship

ben witherington is a conservative evangelical who has written many works on nt theology. this book on the "third quest: ( a term first used by tom wright to describe the resurgence of interest in the historical jesus in the past few decades; the first quest started in the mid 1800's with renan and ended with the works of schweitzer ). in this work, witherington examines the works of notable scholars in the field, including crossan, borg, sanders, wright, meier, schussler-fiorenza, theissen, horsley, vermes, and raymond brown. while witherington is polite, fair, and essentially accurate in his critiques, he does use his viewpoint as the measuring stick, making this work biased but still very good. he is quite kind to nt wright as well as jp meier (whose work A MARGINAL JEW )is considered to be the best work on the subject available today. he is much less so to the jesus seminar as well as elizabeth schussler fiorenza (who are on the far left in the debate). one reviewer said that one should read the individual works and truly ther is no substitute for this; but this book was not wriien for the advanced scholar. overall, this work will be of most value to conservative christians who want a good introduction to the various authors in the field.

Witherington brings things down to earth

Witherington definitely has his own agenda, I wouldn't deny that. However, some of these previous reviewers seem to believe that some books come to be inside an opinion vacuum. to them: EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN AGENDA!! Witherington puts forth a study of the Jesus Quest that I found helpful and quite enlightening. My largest criticism of Witherington's book is that it is difficult to read.

A Judicious Introduction to Third Quest Scholarship

John Meier said in the introduction to Vol. 1 of A Marginal Jew that "there are enough 'Jesus books' to last three lifetimes." Simply reading Meier's work nearly uses up one of these lives.
Enter Professor Witherington, who is not only well aquainted with the scholarly (and not so scholarly) works written by Third Questers, but is also well-respected by biblical scholars with diverse theological commitments. In this work, Witherington summarizes the contributions of over 20 authors, including himself, offering both commendation and criticism.
As an evaluator of others' works, Witherington is fair and judicious. He is certainly not shy about offering criticism concerning other scholars' methodology and hermeneutic, but he showcases both the positives and the negatives. The other reviewer who said that Witherington "trashes" other scholars would do well to read chapter 7. As much as Witherington disagrees with Fiorenza's thesis, that Jesus was a prophet of Sophia, he does in fact voice affirmation of her conclusions more than a few times, including agreeing that Jesus was seeking change in the Jewish patriarchal system (pg. 165). On the other hand, having a great admiration of Meier's work didn't keep him from questioning Meier's assumptions concerning "decades of liturgical adaptation, etc.." leaving their mark on the four Gospels. (pg. 200).
A minor critique-this book is a good place to begin a study of Third Quest Jesus scholarship, but I would also recommend reading a work that details some of the criteria used by historical critics in evaluating the authenticity of Jesus' sayings(ie. multiple attestation, dissimilarity, etc.). Witherington briefly discusses criteria and method (pg. 46-47), but not in great detail. In his end notes he points the reader to another one of his works, The Christology of Jesus, for a fuller treatment.
Minor quibbles aside, this work is a needed service to those who stand intimidated by the mountain of material that modern Jesus scholarship has produced. Dr. Witherington's careful commentary on contemporary contributors gives one confidence and direction for one interested in Third Quest studies.

A little bit overpriced for what it offers

I purchased this book because I am a Portuguese instructor and I was looking for a textbook that students could use as a reference.
The book has some interesting texts and summarizes grammar content in an easy and productive way. I was very glad I found it.

However, I was really disappointed by the price of the book and what it has to offer. It is quite overpriced (everywhere, not only at Amazom) and I was bit upset when I saw that all the pictures in the book are in black and white and not in a good quality. I was looking for something to teach colors in Portuguese and all the colors are shown in black and white (ex: The eggplant is purple - and you see a B&W picture). Another example: the pictures of our coins. They are also in awful quality and you can barely see the details.

I would recommend this book if you are willing to pay a little bit more than I believe it's worth. It has some great things about it and it has been so far one of the best textbooks I've found if you are trying to teach a class and follow a textbook. The only problem is the lack of colors and good images. I hope the next edition includes colors and better pictures because we teachers know that image holds students' attention.

Great book! - but note important facts

This is a great book for me, because of my situation and the resources that I have. If you are using this book as a textbook for a class, you will probably agree that this is the best book out there.

That said, here are the two most important things you need to know about this book.

#1 - THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN IN PORTUGUESE, not English. All of it. If you do not have anyone to guide you through it, I think it would be very hard to learn, as a beginner, from this book.

#2 - If you buy this book, as I did, and cannot read anything in it (I am sure that it says it somewhere in the book, albeit in Portuguese), there is a website on the back of the book where you can listen to all the audio samples. As you go through the book you will see pictures of little headphones and you might think that you are missing a CD or something. Nope, its all on the website.

Needing a urgent revision!

I am brazilian and I am a journalist and Portuguese teacher.
This book needs a revision! It has mistakes about our culture, about grammatical rules, and the dialogues and oral activities are terrible! Very poor vocabulary and a strong and unusual "carioca" accent.
