About the Author

Alexander Stanoyevitch is a professor at California State University–Dominguez Hills. He completed his doctorate in mathematical analysis at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has held academic positions at the University of Hawaii and the University of Guam. Dr. Stanoyevitch has taught many upper-level classes to mathematics and computer science students, has published several articles in leading mathematical journals, and has been an invited speaker at numerous lectures and conferences in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His research interests include areas of both pure and applied mathematics.

NOT easy reading - SOLID overview

I am over one third through a first reading of this text. I have a general methodology for reading texts or reference texts. First, a quick read through. Next a read through with note taking. Lastly, a final read through with additional note taking and working of exercises.

I bought this text because I am taking a college course in Discrete Structures this Fall, 2011, for my major in Computer Science. The course has no assigned text per se. Hence, the need for a comprehensive text to scare the bejeebers out of me, and get a good, solid grasp of what the topic encompasses. This text definitely does both.

This text is considered a one-semester course. It covers basic Number Theory, Probability and Statistics, Cryptography and Cryptanalysis, and much more.

Since it includes theory as well as practical exercises for the student, and requires the student to prove some of the theorems, it might be classified as an upper division text for the undergraduate student after completion of a course in mathematical proofs or similar.

Regardless, this text challenges me to learn beyond my comfort zone. Yes, it is intimidating. Yes, some of the material is beyond my current training and exposure. And, definitely, YES, I will learn more each time I read and study through it.

As I am always looking for texts to become a permanent addition to my library, this text definitely qualifies for permanent status. It will sit very nicely next to my:"The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-4A Boxed Set, Donald Knuth".

I believe this text deserves closer examination as a course text or reference text for your library.

Like Kurt Cobain, Nick Traina lived for punk rock (his bands made two CDs, Gift Before I Go and 17 Reasons), succumbed to heroin addiction, and died of suicide. His mom, Danielle Steel, takes us through her 19 twister-like years with Nick in a memoir more affecting than her potboiler novels. Like his AWOL addict father, Nick had good looks, bad behavior, and a yen for the feminine. Five days before he died, he phoned a woman he saw in a centerfold and had a new girlfriend by nightfall. But his fun was ever haunted by manic depression. At age 11, he was a bed wetter who ate all the Tylenol and Sudafed in the house. He first considered suicide at 13, as Steel learned by reading his diaries after his death.

There is tension in this story--one doctor told Steel if she could get Nick to live to 30, he'd probably live a normal life span. (For example, Nick's troubled dad resurfaced, sober, soon after his son's death.) A Touching Tribute

I am 14 years old and just finished this story. It's always sad when someone loses their life, especially if they are young and seem to have a bright future ahead of them. Danielle Steel did a wonderful job telling the harrowing tale of her baby boy. (If you read some of the other reviews, some say that Ms. Steel only wrote the book for money. I disagree completely and don't understand where they get off saying that because the proceeds go to the Nick Traina Foundation and the sorrow of losing a child is not something that is taken lightly, esecially by the mother) I saw an ad for His Bright Light and decided to read it to learn about this serious illness. It taught me a lot about how manic depressives act and what goes on inside their heads. At the end I cried when I found out how he died and the events of the days before he did. If you would like to learn more about manic depression from something other then a medical textbook or are a fan of Link 80 and/or Knowledge, read this book and get know Nick Traina and the mother who loved him and never gave up hope.

Normally Amazon recommendations irritate the Hades out of me, but in this one instance, my interest in sailing, my annoyance at Danielle Steel's novel Miracle, and process of post-humous publication combined and encouraged me to read this book. I know some people poo-poo this book as something she shouldn't have written, but I'm glad she did. Some families bottle up their grief, and never tell a soul. Danielle does what writers do. Write about it. It was encouraging to see a parent who respects her child's songwriting, his creativity, and the personality behind his works. She dedicates the book to trying to explain the hardships that Nick went through that so many didn't see. It's a disease, and a deadly one, and some are not cured. This book is about him, unlike other books by parents of children who died by suicide, who write books entirely about themselves (ex. Theology and the Disciplines of the Foreign Service: The World's Potential to Contribute to the Church) and dedicate it to their child to promote a religion that he didn't even subscribe to.

Although I don't think she meant this to happen, this book also gave me a little bit of insight into why she wrote Miracle the way she did, and the piece of Nick and herself that is in it. Still irritated that it isn't really about sailing, but at least I understand now that it wasn't really supposed to be.

In some cultures, there are three forms of death. The first is when the body dies. The second death is when one is interred. The third death is when no one mentions their name ever again. I'm glad Danielle wrote this book, because it encourages people to remember him, and not just him, but his works.

Depressing

I am a great fan. This book was not one of them. I admire you for putting up with so much of Nick. He consumed your life and as you said throughout the book and didn't spend enough time with your other children. About the Author

Elliot Aronson�

Elliot Aronson is one of the most renowned social psychologists in the world. In 2002 he was chosen as one of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the twentieth century. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Santa Cruz and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Stanford University.

Dr. Aronson is the only person in the 110-year history of the American Psychological Association to have received all three of its major awards: for distinguished writing, distinguished teaching, and distinguished research. Many other professional societies have honored his research and teaching as well. These include: the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which gave him its highest honor, the Distinguished Scientific Research award; the American Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, which named him Professor of the Year of 1989; the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, which awarded him the Gordon Allport prize for his contributions to the reduction of prejudice among racial and ethnic groups. In 1992, he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has served as President of the Western Psychological Association as well as President of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology.

Tim Wilson�

Tim Wilson did his undergraduate work at Williams College and Hampshire College and received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Currently Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, he has published numerous articles in the areas of introspection, attitude change, self-knowledge, and affective forecasting, as well as the recent book, Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious. His research has received the support of the National Science Foundation and the National Institute for Mental Health. He has been associate editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and a member of the Social and Groups Processes Review Committee at the National Institute of Mental Health. He has been elected twice to the Executive Board of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology and is a Fellow in the American Psychological Society. Wilson has taught the Introduction to Social Psychology course at the University of Virginia for more than twenty years. He was recently awarded an All University Outstanding Teaching Award.

Robin Akert

Robin Akert graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where she majored in psychology and sociology. She received her Ph.D. in experimental social psychology from Princeton University. She is currently a professor of psychology at Wellesley College, where she was awarded the Pinanski Prize for Excellence in Teaching early in her career. She publishes primarily in the area of nonverbal communication and recently received the AAUW American Fellowship in support of her research. She has taught the social psychology course at Wellesley College every semester for over twenty years.

Fantastic book on a very interesting subject.

This is the most thoroughly engaging, thought provoking, and useful textbook I have ever had to read. Although it was assigned reading, I always looked forward to it and often read beyond what was required. The stories at the beginning of every chapter, the famous quotes that relate to the issues discussed, and the numerous examples of experiments cited in the text make this an excellent book. I plan to read some of the recommended titles for further reading that the book suggests.

I'm a psychology professor and I have strong feelings about the books I use. This book is perfect. Organized, up-to-date, interesting examples. The book also has the clear imprint of the kind and thoughtful Elliot Aronson. If you teach you will appreciate the instructor resources. The PPTs are complete with ideas for notes; the IM has great class activities, and there is a test bank. This has everything you need to get your course up and running. Thank you Dr. Aronson!

Social Psychology Textbook

I bought this textbook for my social psychology class. The book is well organized and easy to read, with key concepts or definitions either bolded or slanted. I bought the book new, and so it came new without any highlighting or pen markings. I like how each definition is explained by classic studies in the field. Also concepts are further explained through both classic studies and more recent studies. This is a fantastic textbook and has end of chapter reviews and tests. This social psychology textbook compares different aspects of psychology like personality and other social sciences to better understand concepts. This book is fairly large compared to other textbooks. The textbook has supported material online and can be bought accompanied by MyPsychLab.

The Must-Have, Essential Guide for Your Canon T5!

Your Canon T5 comes with an instruction booklet and more documentation on CDs. That's enough to get you started, but if you really want to take full advantage of your T5, you must buy this book. Trust me, it's money well spent! I discovered my T5 had far more sophisticated features than I realized. This book not only takes you through the mechanics of using these features, it also explains how to get the best exposures for myriad situations. The format is easy-to-read; the writing clear and concise.

I was "just OK" with my Canon T5 until I read this book. Now, I'm thrilled with it because it does so much more than what I thought after reading Canon's documentation that came with the camera. Even you're happy just shooting on Auto or using the presets on the camera, this book is offers helpful tips on how to get the best shot possible. If you want to take control of your T5 and take full advantage of everything it has to offer, you NEED this book!

PLEASE NOTE: I also bought the Kindle version so I would have the information handy for reference on my phone and tablet. I found the Kindle version to be not as user friendly as I'd hoped and for the expensive price, I would not recommend it.

I ordered the kindle version of this book and it has been extremely difficult to navigate back and forth between sections. For this type of book, it is probably better to order the paper-back version.

I'm a Dummy, and I could understand this guide.

Before buying my T5, I practiced with my boyfriend's T3. He couldn't explain all the settings and buttons, and some of what he explained, I didn't understand. This book really helped this strictly point-and-shoot photographer understand how to work with a DSLR. I love this book and i love my new camera!
