The book is a decent one. I've made reference to better ones. The teacher doesn't coordinate with it and even uses the older book. I'm sure I would feel better if we actually used it. I'm glad I got it on Amazon and didn't have to pay book store prices.

About the Author

Elliot Aronson�

Elliot Aronson is one of the most renowned social psychologists in the world. In 2002 he was chosen as one of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the twentieth century. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Santa Cruz and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Stanford University.

Dr. Aronson is the only person in the 110-year history of the American Psychological Association to have received all three of its major awards: for distinguished writing, distinguished teaching, and distinguished research. Many other professional societies have honored his research and teaching as well. These include: the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which gave him its highest honor, the Distinguished Scientific Research award; the American Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, which named him Professor of the Year of 1989; the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, which awarded him the Gordon Allport prize for his contributions to the reduction of prejudice among racial and ethnic groups. In 1992, he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has served as President of the Western Psychological Association as well as President of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology.

Tim Wilson�

Tim Wilson did his undergraduate work at Williams College and Hampshire College and received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Currently Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, he has published numerous articles in the areas of introspection, attitude change, self-knowledge, and affective forecasting, as well as the recent book, Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious. His research has received the support of the National Science Foundation and the National Institute for Mental Health. He has been associate editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and a member of the Social and Groups Processes Review Committee at the National Institute of Mental Health. He has been elected twice to the Executive Board of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology and is a Fellow in the American Psychological Society. Wilson has taught the Introduction to Social Psychology course at the University of Virginia for more than twenty years. He was recently awarded an All University Outstanding Teaching Award.

Robin Akert

Robin Akert graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where she majored in psychology and sociology. She received her Ph.D. in experimental social psychology from Princeton University. She is currently a professor of psychology at Wellesley College, where she was awarded the Pinanski Prize for Excellence in Teaching early in her career. She publishes primarily in the area of nonverbal communication and recently received the AAUW American Fellowship in support of her research. She has taught the social psychology course at Wellesley College every semester for over twenty years.

Fantastic book on a very interesting subject.

This is the most thoroughly engaging, thought provoking, and useful textbook I have ever had to read. Although it was assigned reading, I always looked forward to it and often read beyond what was required. The stories at the beginning of every chapter, the famous quotes that relate to the issues discussed, and the numerous examples of experiments cited in the text make this an excellent book. I plan to read some of the recommended titles for further reading that the book suggests.

Best book for social psychology

I'm a psychology professor and I have strong feelings about the books I use. This book is perfect. Organized, up-to-date, interesting examples. The book also has the clear imprint of the kind and thoughtful Elliot Aronson. If you teach you will appreciate the instructor resources. The PPTs are complete with ideas for notes; the IM has great class activities, and there is a test bank. This has everything you need to get your course up and running. Thank you Dr. Aronson!

Social Psychology Textbook

I bought this textbook for my social psychology class. The book is well organized and easy to read, with key concepts or definitions either bolded or slanted. I bought the book new, and so it came new without any highlighting or pen markings. I like how each definition is explained by classic studies in the field. Also concepts are further explained through both classic studies and more recent studies. This is a fantastic textbook and has end of chapter reviews and tests. This social psychology textbook compares different aspects of psychology like personality and other social sciences to better understand concepts. This book is fairly large compared to other textbooks. The textbook has supported material online and can be bought accompanied by MyPsychLab.

The Must-Have, Essential Guide for Your Canon T5!

Your Canon T5 comes with an instruction booklet and more documentation on CDs. That's enough to get you started, but if you really want to take full advantage of your T5, you must buy this book. Trust me, it's money well spent! I discovered my T5 had far more sophisticated features than I realized. This book not only takes you through the mechanics of using these features, it also explains how to get the best exposures for myriad situations. The format is easy-to-read; the writing clear and concise.

I was "just OK" with my Canon T5 until I read this book. Now, I'm thrilled with it because it does so much more than what I thought after reading Canon's documentation that came with the camera. Even you're happy just shooting on Auto or using the presets on the camera, this book is offers helpful tips on how to get the best shot possible. If you want to take control of your T5 and take full advantage of everything it has to offer, you NEED this book!

PLEASE NOTE: I also bought the Kindle version so I would have the information handy for reference on my phone and tablet. I found the Kindle version to be not as user friendly as I'd hoped and for the expensive price, I would not recommend it.

I'm a Dummy, and I could understand this guide.

Before buying my T5, I practiced with my boyfriend's T3. He couldn't explain all the settings and buttons, and some of what he explained, I didn't understand. This book really helped this strictly point-and-shoot photographer understand how to work with a DSLR. I love this book and i love my new camera!

About the Author
J. Allison Butler has worked for many local, regional, and state transportation agencies during his 30-year career. A prolific writer in his area of expertise, Butler has been a consistent innovator in such fields as spatial database design, traffic engineering, planning policy, and economic development. He was a key participant in developing the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) certification program. He is a co developer with Dr. Kenneth J. Dueker of the GIS-T Enterprise Data Model. Mr. Butler is a frequent conference speaker and workshop instructor on a number of topics including highway safety, geodatabase design, agency management, and land-use planning. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and his Master of Science degree in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

We've needed this for a long time

The first of its kind, Designing Geodatabases for Transportation is likely to remain the best of its kind. Al Butler has violated several "rules" of technical writing:

* He has opinions, isn't afraid to express them, and does so in an engaging, conversational style enlivened by war stories and thinking outside the polygon. Most technical texts have no discernible voice and read as dull as dirt (apologies to soil scientists).

* He pragmatically and mercifully separates "need to knows" from "nice to knows", steering the reader around minutiae only a true nerd could love; yet retains that deeper content in unobtrusive places. Many technical works overwhelm the reader with information, providing no indication of relative importance.

* He manages to make ArcObjects comprehensible to the non or new programmer by providing simplified object model diagrams.

* He demystifies the arcana of internal ArcGIS data types, relationship classes, and other poorly explained (elsewhere) geodatabase concepts.

* Most importantly, he maps geodatabase structures to their counterparts in relational database theory. The more you understand the relational database foundation of the geodatabase, the better you'll be at designing them--this section alone makes the book worthwhile. If you're a database person adding the Geographic to your Information Systems background, this book will greatly aid your transition.

As for the transportation content, it's all there--linear referencing, dynamic segmentation, traffic counts, HPMS, editing and publishing data for State DOTs, network datasets and even geometric networks (typically not used for transportation purposes), the evolution of GIS transportation data models, etc.

Finally, and refreshingly, the author takes a one-size-does-*not*-fit-all approach, providing the reader a pick and choose, cookbook-like approach to suit individual need.

Still working my way through the book, but nodding my head in agreement more often than usual--a good indication, to me anyway, that the author:

* Knows his subject matter
* Has a gift for conveying that knowledge clearly to others.
* Has been out in the real world, solving real world problems
* Understands the business side of the Transportation house

Highly recommended to anyone interested in general geodatabase design, specific geodatabase design (transportation and possibly utility geodatabase design since linear referencing and networks play a role), and transportation GIS.

Al Butler was instrumental in helping develop the GISP certification program, and this book is another fine contribution to the GIS profession. We've not only needed this book--we need more books written like it. To my relief, it was and is not YASTMB--Yet Another Show-and-Tell Map Book. It's a practical how-to and reference for doing your job better.

Books on the geodatabase tend to be oriented toward the introductory side (quite often geared toward teaching basic geodatabase concepts over a 16 week semester) or written at a level that is not attainable to the GIS novice. Designing Geodatabases for Transportation reaches well beyond the introductory level to provide a thorough explanation of the geodatabase, however it also takes the time to create a foundation based on fundamental geodatabase concepts.

At 461 pages Designing Geodatabases for Transportation probably shies away from being a weekend read to brush up on the geodatabase before launching into a project, but it is a solid reference for someone looking to trudge through the material prior to setting off on a geodatabase project. The author (J. Allison Butler) breaks the book down into three sections (Basic geodatabase design concepts, Understanding transportation geodatabase design issues, and Enterprise-level solutions and modal data models).

While not suited to someone new to GIS, Butler presents a resource that allows those with a comfortable working knowledge of GIS to begin working on applied geodatabase design. Overall, Design Geodatabases for Transportation is laid out in 18 chapters and could be used in an intermediate or advanced level GIS course (although it's important to note that the book does not have tutorials and doesn't come with the almost standard evaluations copy of ESRI software).

Designing Geodatabases for Transportation allows the reader to get comfortable with the idea of transportation in GIS. It also allows reader to expand their knowledge in how the geodatabase can be incorporated into their data management plans. Butler takes time to address the incorporation of GIS transportation standards such as the UNETRANS network data model. The book's intense focus on a specialty matter narrows the audience, but by the same token it provides a level of knowledge that is sometimes hard to come by in GIS books. Rather than focusing on the end products of a GIS (i.e. maps), Butler takes the time to work with the mechanics of transportation data.

The book proved beneficial for anyone interested in learning about how transportation-related GIS data can be structured. It covers general fundamentals about GIS data management, from relational database techniques, database design, and provides great examples that other books covering the same material may not describe as well. This book encouraged me to take a look at how I manage my GIS data and guided me on how to improve on data management. Overall, it's a good book to have, a good resource for GIS transportation planners, GIS Managers, Modelers, or GIS practioners in general.

Tobias Wolff's latest collection of short stories, written over a period of thirty years, contains twenty-one previously published in book form with ten new stories added. The characters and situations are diverse although a good many stories take place in the snow; as one character says, however-- and I tend to agree with him-- snow is much overrated. I also agree with the writer Edward P. Jones whose definition of a good short story is one that "the world, for even one character, has shifted, whether to a large or a tiny degree." These stories (at least practically all of them) would interest Mr. Jones. In some of them the shift is enormous: a bank customer is shot in the head by a robber; one hunter shoots a friend, a fellow hunter; a young man in an act of definace paints a white picket fence red; a professor, having learned that she has been duped into interviewing for a teaching position that the search committee has already decided on, veers from her canned lecture on the Marshall Plan into an extemporaneous speech about the barbarism of the Iroquois. In others the world moves inside the head of the character. In "Awaiting Orders" a sergeant realizes that he is ashamed to take a woman and her child home with him, not because he has a male lover, but because she will see that he doesn't care for the lover as much as the lover cares for him. "What he feared, what he could not allow, was for her to see how Dixon [his lover] looked at him, and then to see that he coud not give back what he received. That things between them were unequal, and himself unloving." A man at the death watch for his mother no longer knows how to be a son but can be a father.

Mr. Wolff writes about relationships, the "shakiness" of families, young love, betrayal, characters who are down and out although they seldom whine-- in a word often decent people. One of my favorite stories is "The Night in Question," a beautiful moving account of a brother and sister who had an abusive father. The siblings are worlds apart because the brother has gone off the deep end with religion but still so close because of their love for each other. It bears reading again and again.

Wolff's seamless transparent prose is for the most part free of metaphor although older people have "wintry smiles" and a "wide woman" on a bus has flesh under her arms that "swings like hammocks." These stories are not for the lazy reader for they are as subtle and complex as anything Henry James ever wrote although Mr. Wolff certainly is a master of the short story himself.

Perhaps in the tradition of Raymond Carver's decision to compile in 'peak-career' his 'greatest hits' compilation of short stories in Where Im Calling From, out comes Tobias Wolff with this fantastic book.

These stories are short-short (more in the length tradition of Barthelme than Carver), but you will be amazed on the clarity, load of the subject, conciseness, and impact. The tone and style can shift between stories as well--humurous to morose, declarative to imperative, relaxed to upfront, 'heavy' themes to moderate/light--perhaps testifying to how careful Wolff plans, writes, edit, and re-edit his stories before publishing. The craftiness or perhaps sheer natural talent of Tobias Wolff in working with shorts is astounding. He makes it look easy.
