Castaneda meets Tolkien, inspirational fantasy

This book is an inspiring tale about shamanism in Anglo-Saxon times. The reader will immediately see the influences of Castaneda, Tolkien, and the Jungian/Joseph Campbell shool of psychology.

Bates does tie in some interesting historical facts, and does a good job of explaining Wyrd and other Pagan concepts. The only issues are that it does not live up to the story telling ability of either Castaneda or Tolkien, and comes across a little too clean & idealistic. The tale seems to be a fairly bare frame on which to hang the author's admiration for his own view of pre-Christian culture.

In doing so, the book reflects an idealised and romantic view of Pagan culture, akin to the fantasy traditions of Wicca. As a fellow Pagan, I can empathise with the urge to imagine these ancestors as wise custodians of the land. However, the evidence indicates that they were actually not all that different to us in exploiting natural resources (there were just less of them to make an impact), and they almost certainly practiced some rites that we would baulk at today. For every wise one, there would have been many more who were just ignorant and superstitious.

As comforting as it may be to our own conscience to believe in the 19th Century ideal of the noble savage, or the New-Age fantasy of the all knowing shaman, it does our ancestors a disservice to always imagine that their efforts came to nought, and their descendants ended up inferior to them.

The book is well worth the read as great inspiration, but take it with a grain of salt, as a simple tale based on very limited historical information seen through a very thick lense of idealism.

A Shamanic Book About Shamanic Anglo-Saxonry

This is one of my favorite books on heathenry. Brian Bates really manages to penetrate with imagination and scholarship what the life of an Anglo-Saxon sorceror was really like, and his vision of Wyrd is palpable and powerful. This book is really a wonderful fictional companion to Siegfried Goodfellow's Wyrd Megin Thew : The Wild, Wooly Strength of Heathen Ways, which also covers similar material in a non-fiction setting, but Brian Bates was the one who set the standard! You will find yourself identifying with these characters and taken back into a world where magic was still alive, and where elves and fairies were not cute little creatures, but powerful, awesome, inspiring, and sometimes intimidating creatures that wizards knew how to bargain with!! Highly recommended.

An Excellent Tale

I read this book back in the 90's after a band called Sabbat wrote an album (Dreamweaver) based on the novel. My copy was getting rather tatty so it's nice to see it back in print once again. My new copy is on the way :)

The Way of Wyrd is an excellent story exploring the differences and similarities between Christianity and Paganism.

Wat Brand is sent to explore Pagan England to learn their ways ready for when Christianity invades.

However, his guide, Wulf, shows him far more than he could ever have imagined and Wat becomes submerged in the way of Wyrd. For the best way to learn of the Pagan spirits is to meet them face to face.

Robust and comprehensive guide to the new SAT's grammar

As an SAT tutor, I recommend certain books to my students so that they can accomplish as much as possible outside of my office. The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar is the most helpful book I've yet seen for the new SAT (which will debut in March of 2016). Here are a few reasons why:

1. The book is comprehensive. I've been teaching SAT prep for a long time, and most of my students are fairly to highly serious about their scores. I'm glad to be able to offer them a workbook that covers everything, rather than one that covers most of the test.

2. Practice question realism is very good. It's essential that students get used to the nuances and style of the real test, and unlike books published by most companies, this one aptly mimics the complexities of real SAT passages and questions.

3. It's up-to-date. The new SAT writing section is much different than that of the current SAT. This book reflects all the changes we know about right now.

4. The book cross-references the College Board / Khan Academy tests, so that students can look up authentic questions on which to practice concepts.

The only real criticism I have of the book is the formatting and look - it might be easier for certain students to use if the graphic design and layout were more engaging. But this is easily the best book on the market for students who truly want to understand the material.

A favorite for both tutor and student

I agree with Vince Kotchian on all his points. I am a tutor and I know my students work well with the lessons in this book. They read the grammar rules for a topic like subject-verb agreement, then they do her exercises. Step by step, my students master each rule. I'm so glad she took the time to make up so many questions for practice. I can assign some for HW after we do a few together. It's great for self-prep as well.

Like the others who have reviewed this book, I am a professional test prep instructor (GMAT, SAT and ACT). I'm not sure what the other instructors see in this book, but there are clearly a lot of errors. Since this is about the new SAT, I'd expected the usual errors, such as typos and mistakes in underlining or answer choices. What I did not expect were mistakes with basic subject-verb agreement and rudimentary grammar. For example, in English, the words some, any, none, all and most can be used as singular or plural. "Some food is on the table." "Some guests are sitting at the table." Yet the author says "any" and "none" are only singular while the others are only plural. Thus, in the book, the use of "any" (I forgot the exact sentence) was used incorrectly in a sentence in a practice exercise. I believe it was something like, "If any participants are sick..." This, according to the book, is grammatically incorrect. It should read, "If any participants is sick..." After seeing this, we no longer use this book at work.

I realize I'm in the minority here, so for the sake of the students learning from this book I sincerely hope the author corrects her mistakes in later editions.

disappointing

I was really disappointed with this book. The quality is very bad and it looks like it was printed on an old home printer. The information inside is useful, but the projects look as if they were made by a child. No fine finishes, very amateur.

In this somewhat interesting (if overpriced) look at how and where America's rebellious pop-culture child has ended up, Talevski details the machinations, politics, and philosophy involved in founding the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His telling of how it came to be housed in Cleveland along with his rundown of each year's induction ceremonies since the hall's 1986 founding is well done?and would have been enough. However, in the rest of the book?which is mostly a more in-depth look at each of the 149 inductees through 1997?Talevski offers nothing new except inductees' real and full names and dates of induction. The eclectic bibliographic information for each artist can indeed be helpful because it has been pulled from sources that are not always used to the fullest extent, but the entries themselves seldom reveal anything not already available in other pop-music reference works. Appendixes provide a chronological listing of inductees by year and category and, perhaps most interestingly, nominees who were not inducted. This is an excellent rock reference book.

This book provides a critical summary of the origins of rock and roll and the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. It details the early history of rock and the historical basis for the Hall of Fame's location in Northeast Ohio. It also serves as a biographical reference tool of the present Hall of Fame inductees. It provides a unique look at a very popular destination for today's rock fans.

Misleading advertisment

I received this book in great shape, but the picture and impression you see here is extremely misleading. The book is much, much smaller than expected with a bland beige cover and thin black writing. It looks nothing like this image from Amazon. When I unwrapped it, I was so sad that I paid $80.00 for it...this is NOT an $80 book...it's more like a $15.00 book. This was an xmas gift...so unfortunately I don't have enough time to return & reorder, or else I would. Shame.
