Hunter's Run, by George R. R. Martin, Gardner Dozois, Daniel Abraham

Running from poverty and hopelessness, Ramn Espejo boarded one of the great starships of the mysterious, repulsive Enye. But the new life he found on the far-off planet of So Paulo was no better than the one he abandoned. Then one night his rage and too much alcohol get the better of him. Deadly violence ensues, forcing Ramn to flee into the wilderness.

Mercifully, almost happily alone—far from the loud, bustling hive of humanity that he detests with sociopathic fervor—the luckless prospector is finally free to search for the one rich strike that could make him wealthy. But what he stumbles upon instead is an advanced alien race in hiding: desperate fugitives, like him, on a world not their own. Suddenly in possession of a powerful, dangerous secret and caught up in an extraordinary manhunt on a hostile, unpredictable planet, Ramn must first escape . . . and then, somehow, survive.

And his deadliest enemy is himself.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Martin (Song of Ice and Fire series), Dozois (Strange Days) and Abraham (A Shadow in Summer) revisit classic themes of exploration, exploitation and what it means to be human in this gritty SF adventure. Humanity has finally reached the stars, only to find that all the best spots have been claimed by other races—the Silver Enye, Turu, Cian and others. Human colonists serve as world-building crash-test dummies, dropped onto empty planets deemed too dangerous or inconvenient for other races, to pave over whatever marvels and threats evolution had put there. On the misbegotten colony planet of So Paulo, ore prospector Ramon Espejo has no illusions, especially about how the Enye view humanity. Then Ramon murders the wrong man in a drunken fight and takes off into the wastelands to avoid the Enye authorities. Once in the outback, he discovers he's not the only one trying to hide from the Enye—and that the deadly cat-lizards called chupacabras are far from the worst dangers on So Paulo. This tightly written novel, with its memorable protagonist and intriguing extrapolation, delivers on all levels. (Jan.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
In music, supergroups of established artists are rarely greater than the sum of their parts. The same often goes for science fiction, but critics agreed that these three authors beat the trend by producing a tight, consistent novel. Whether because of Martin€™s decades of collaborative work, Dozois€™s long career as an editor, or Abraham€™s fresh prose style, every reviewer said the book seemed as if it were written by one person. The only complaint came from reviewers who had read an earlier, novella-length version of the story; they felt that expanding the story enriched it somewhat, but not by much. While it would be hard to match Hunter€™s Run with any of these authors€™ previous works, it can certainly be called a successful experiment€"and a compelling SF novel.

“This is smashing SF—a great manhunt story.” (Express)

“[A] tense interspecies battle of wits with tangy atmospherics and a bleak lesson on the meaning of freedom. A.” (Entertainment Weekly)

“[S]o sharp you have to be careful not to cut your fingers while turning the pages...HUNTER’S RUN is the sort of tense, what’s-gonna-happen-next battle of cultures and wits that keeps you guessing. And, perhaps, rekindles your childhood love of sci-fi.” (The Star Press (Muncie, Indiana))

Not "Song of Ice and Fire" or "Long Price Quartet"
By Rick H
I bought this book because I love George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (who doesn't? -- see A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)) and his student Daniel Abraham's excellent Long Price Quartet (see A Shadow in Summer (The Long Price Quartet)). I was not familiar with Gardner Dozois.

Do not expect either series. Sure, this is sort of a science fiction book, in that it takes place on a colonized planet, has an alien race that shuttles humans around, and vehicles that hover. This is the story of one man's flight from his crime, his discovery of and capture by another alien race, and his struggle to get free -- all the while having to come to terms with who he is, what is right and wrong, and where and how things belong. The evolution of this character in his struggle to survive is fascinating -- and while it sounds like a very introspective story, it's still a solid adventure.

This is a bit of a brainy book - folks who like Fantasy or Science Fiction for fast paced action may not like this. This is for people who like serious character and story development. And, of course, Martin just happens to be a master at that.

Highly recommended.

Hunter's Run is well plotted, fast paced and great entertainment
By J. C. Amos
This is another book that I bought based solely on who wrote it. I love Martin and Abraham is also a great writer, though I had never heard of Dozois prior to this. I didn't know what I would think, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Hunter's Run has action, drama, humor and bizarre aliens; just about all you could ask for in a great sci-fi book. Is it a masterpiece? I still can't quite decide...

My favorite part of this book is what most reviewers seem to dislike the most: the main character. Ramon Espejo is a pretty despicable human being. He's a murderer and a criminal, but I'll be damned if he doesn't provide an entertaining point of view. Maybe I've gotten to the point where I've read too much typical fiction with do-gooder protagonists that an a**hole is just what I needed. And even if he is an a**hole, he is funny and has some great dialogue, especially with his travelling companion/captor (who for the sake of not spoiling, I will not reveal here.) And as the story progresses, even though he is still sort of despicable, he does have an epiphany of sorts that changes him as a person. On the basis of how he thought and how he acted, his decisions were believable and I thought his progression as a character was really well done.

The actual story, which I can't speak much on because I'd give it away, is also well done. It is a nice tight plot that flows well from start to finish. There is some good action and some crazy situations, but given the circumstances, there is nothing unbelievable. By the end of Hunter's Run, I was left a little disappointed that it had ended but in no way dissatisfied with the ending. There are no loose ends and it is its own complete story.

This really teeters on the edge between a 4 star and a 5 star book. I'd have to say I'll give it 4.5 stars and curse Amazon once again for not having a more intricate rating system. Pretty much the only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 is that considering the prose of Martin and Abraham, the writing could have been better. Don't get me wrong, the writing isn't bad, it's just not on par with Song of Ice and Fire or Abraham's very eloquent style in the Long Price Quartet. Toward the beginning of the story, the writing seemed a little lazy and hurried, like there were more details that could have been included. But as the story progressed and the main character began to develop, the writing almost seemed to get better, so perhaps all of this was intended. The same can almost be said about the story. It's rare that the reader actually wants more time to be spent in the development of the characters and setting before the story really gets started, but I felt at the beginning it moved a little too quickly. Once the story gets moving however, I forgot all about that. I think the only other thing that keeps it out of 5 star territory is that it's not quite as grand nor the scope quite as great as some of the books that I consider 5 star.

I'd really be interested to know how three authors actually piece together a book like this, what the writing process is. (Okay, so let's take a drunken a-hole down on his luck, a backwater prospecting planet, and some really bizarre aliens... go!) In any case, the outcome is great. Despite my somewhat indecisive misgivings, I'd recommend this book to any sci-fi fan.

Great Stuff
By S. M Stirling
Usually a collaboration, and still more a three-way collaboration, is less than the sum of its parts. These three have produced a book as seamless and fresh as one by an individual writer -- and a very good one. It's an intriguing modern-space-opera setting, combined with a frontier tale and a 'first contact' story with some very intriguing aliens. But the hero (or given his character, the protagonist) steals the show even from the strange world aand stranger aliens. Bravo!

Combat, Ritual, and Performance: Anthropology of the Martial Arts, by David E. Jones

This is the first book to describe martial arts and martial behaviors as serious topics deserving of serious study. Although there have been a number of readers dealing with warfare, this is the only one that, among other things, focuses on the warrior, both ancient and modern.

Presents a collection of readings which introduce the study of martial behaviors in a cross-cultural context. The subject matter ranges from a consideration of the warclub as weapon and status symbol among the chiefdoms of the American Southwest at the time of European contact to contemporary ritual warfare in the highlands of Bolivia.

All over the world, warriors have left their mark on culture. Their codes of behavior become the basis of diplomacy, models of service, and courage in the protection of social institutions. Chivalry in the West arose from the codes of the noble knights and ^IBushido^R, (The Way of the Warrior), the Bible of the Samurai, still serves as the basis of etiquette in modern Japan. In practically every society myths and tales of culture heroes who are warriors are important in the enculturation and socialization of children. Martial arts, which are stylized behaviors displaying techniques related to those practiced on the battlefield, are considered here to be more about culture, art, and history than about fighting.

As much stew as you can make from very few oysters
By Kindle Customer
The martial arts, variously defined, are certainly worth scholarly examination. The editor has done his best to provide a survey of the social science literature on the subject. Unfortunately it falls a little short of the mark.
This isn't entirely his fault. There just isn't that much in the scholarly literature on the subject. He had to go pretty far afield in subject matter and in time to fill a volume. And it shows.
Some of the articles are interesting from a social science perspective but have absolutely nothing to do with combatives, hoplology or the like. The piece on Tanzanian dance competition, for instance, is fascinating. But the author demonstrates in the first couple pages that the practice has no martial past.
Others, such as the first article in the book and the two articles by Donohue suffer, I fear from two common sins of anthropology. The authors ignore that which does not agree with their theses, retain a tad too much scholarly detachment when investigating exceptionally personal and transformative practices, make universal statements based on a very limited cultural milieu, and seem to have trouble taking believing that practitioners of cultural practices have insight into their own lives and experience.
Other articles such as the ones on the Ayarrs and somatic nationalism in Indian wrestling hit the sweet spot of hoplology and social science scholarship.
The book could have been better. But given the material the editor had to work with it is a decent effort.

Explore the full potential of NHibernate to build robust data access code

About This Book
  • Build a robust and scalable data access layer using NHibernate's features and practical wisdom
  • Use patterns such as specification and query object to make data access layer maintainable and extensible
  • Work effectively with legacy databases using lesser known NHibernate features
Who This Book Is For

This book targets .NET developers who have never used an ORM before, developers who have used an ORM before but are new to NHibernate, or have used NHibernate sparingly and want to learn more about NHibernate.

What You Will Learn
  • Map domain entities to a database schema using the different mapping mechanisms available
  • Configure NHibernate through XML configuration
  • Save, update, and delete entities in the database and query data from a database using different querying methods
  • Optimize database operations for speed and memory consumption
  • Use NHibernate in real-life software projects
  • Get to know about data access patterns such as repository, specification, and query object
  • Use NHibernate with legacy databases
In Detail

Connecting the object-oriented world of .NET to the relational world of databases has always been fiddly but with the onset of ORMs such as NHibernate, developers have finally got some relief in this area.

You will begin with a bird's eye view of NHibernate, touching upon its core concepts. You will define domain model and map it with database schema using different techniques. You will then look into multiple ways of storing domain entities in a database and learn important concepts such as transitive persistence, transactions and unit of work. This will be followed by retrieving data from database. Next, you will optimize your code, explore concepts such as the onion architecture, and learn where NHibernate fits best in an application's architecture. After introducing a well-known repository pattern into our application, you will learn to deal with legacy databases. We will conclude with infrequently used features such as stateless sessions, the second level cache, concurrency, and so on, which might come handy.

Definitely the book NHibernate was lacking
By Samir Aguiar
I have just finished this book and I'm glad I bought it. This is the NHibernate book I was looking for.

I decided to learn more about NH because I'm using it at my current job and I was tired of asking for help when something complex was needed. But although I was not a beginner, I was not an expert either so the official documentation never helped me much. This book though is an in-depth tutorial, a guide, that you can easily follow along from the beginning to the very end while understanding every piece of it.

Chatekar's writing is clear and straightforward. It's detailed enough to give you an understanding of the topic and summarized enough so you don't get tired. The first half of the book is more about teaching you the basics: there's a simple problem and the author slowly builds a solution that uses NHibernate. The examples are easy to follow and the chapters are divided so that NHibernate configuration, entities mapping and database querying/writing are all covered separately. The second half of the book advances into more complex topics such as project organization (software architecture), NHibernate usage on web projects, design patterns, dependency injection, performance (caching, lazy loading, future queries) and so on. Also, along the road the author gives a handful of valuable advice about best practices and common pitfalls/caveats so that in the end you are not just a person with a new complex skill and no idea of where to begin to apply it.

The only two things that prevented me from giving it 5 stars were the lack of a code revision and more explanation of entities mappings.
In the first half, the author goes into implementing a solution to the problem proposed. If you try to follow along, you won't be able to either compile or run the code as there are a lot of tweaks required. I've only managed to run it after changing NHibernate's configuration and checking the book source (which also didn't compile). The book webpage could at least contain some errata or guidance for that (I did submit some to Packt but it never got published).
Secondly, I still think that there could have been more discussion about mappings and relationships, which are the heart of NHibernate and the source of many Stack Overflow questions. Again, the documentation is not very helpful here. For instance, the author made all relationships bidirectional and never got much into unidirectional relationships. Why one-to-one relationships cannot be unidirectional? What about mapping an FK Id into its own property to avoid loading an associated entity and mimic ISession.Load() behavior? What about nested relationships with relationships between children? Those are a few questions that remained after reading (and which of course I'll be exploring myself) but could have been clarified in the first chapters.

Anyway, despite the above critics the book is definitely worth it and will help anyone to overcome the initial learning curve of NHibernate. It's not meant to cover all the features but rather just kick start the reader -- which it has successfully accomplished.

It's a textbook. What do you expect, pull an all nighter like you did with Harry Potter? No, it's pretty boring. But I got an A in the class so I guess I learned something.

The Monster Butler. Allen Nicol, by Allan Nicol

Archibald Hall was one of Scotland's most enigmatic criminals. A man of multiple personae, Hall was more widely known as Roy Fontaine, the Monster Butler who murdered five people, including his own brother. After his convictions for murder in both Scotland and England in 1978, and with talk of a film of his life story, Hall took the opportunity to glamourise his past in books and magazines. What can be unravelled from his web of lies, though, is that he began the sinister transformation into Roy Fontaine, the gentleman butler - ready to seduce, steal and deceive - after effecting a more refined accent and studying etiquette and the aristocracy whilst serving his many jail terms. But how does a man go from thief to killer? Was he always destined to be an unfeeling, cold-blooded murderer? Or was he simply a desperate man obsessed with making a fortune by any means? And what could have influenced his bizarre outlook on life? These are the questions Allan Nicol examines in this illuminating new account of 'The Monster Butler'.

A Twist on True Crime from the UK
By Kim Bryan
In 1924, a serial killer was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His name was Archibald Thomson Hall.

Hall, who later would rename himself Roy Fontaine, would begin traveling a path to life imprisonment at the age of sixteen; his story beginning with a seduction by his mother's friend and a raid of the family's military based home in search of the Nazi memorabilia he collected, despite a world at war against the Germans.

From there Hall/Fontaine would engage in petty thievery and homosexual prostitution, all the while maintaining heterosexual affairs with naive women willing to open their wallets to him; these affairs just a mild inconvenience to his legitimate romances with a string of men.

Taking employment as a butler in various estates, he would use position to plot his next heist. Yet Hall/Fontaine would eventually make the leap from burglarizing butler to serial killer. His victims included his lover and cohort, David Wright, former British Parliament member Walter Scott-Elliott and wife, Dorothy Scott-Elliott, and his brother Donald McMillan Thomson Hall.

If not the keen eye and high suspicions of a hotel clerk, it can only be imagined how many more people would have died at the hands of Hall/Fontaine.

In his 2011 true crime book The Monster Butler, author A.M. Nichol puts a new spin on a genre without a lot of room for flair.

In the first of three parts, Nichols takes excerpts from Hall/Fontaine's 1999 autobiography To Kill and Kill Again: The Chilling True Confessions of a Serial Killer, creating essentially a recounting of crimes in first person. The second portion of the book, details the crimes based on news reports, interviews, police reports, and forensics with a sprinkling of author commentary on his personal observations. And in the third and final section of The Moster Butler, Nichol explores the heredity versus environment debate of serial killers - was Hall/Fontaine simply insane, or could it have been factors of an unhappy childhood and lack of identity that created a killer?

Scottish attorney A.M. Nichol has a truly deep understanding of the criminal mind as is evidenced by his ability to see through the fantasies of a killer and reconstruct the events based on indisputable forensics to get to the truth. And the final section is an intense, thought-provoking dialogue about what makes a murderer.

Prior to reading The Monster Butler, , I was unaware that Nichol was a solicitor - which, as regular readers, I often times avoid due to their writing styles. However, I am happy to report that, while Nichol waxes eloquently about Hall/Fontaine, he does not do so arrogantly - simplistic yet thorough but doesn't require a legal degree to get read.

I really enjoy venturing outside the U.S. true crime market; there's so much fresh material that most often I know nothing about because it hasn't broadcast repeatedly on every channel in the 24-hour cable news channel line-up.

Last, but not least, I give a kudos and applause to U.K. publishers for their use of color photographs. I realize that it increases printing costs but it's so nice to see such a clear image to assist in my reading. The higher price is not a deterrent to me as I see that I am paying for quality over quantity. (Hint! Hint! to American publishers!)

The true horror of an atypical serial killer
By John Milton
Serial killers are fertile subject matter for the silver screen: Norman Bates, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Hannibal Lecter, Michael Myers, and TV's very own Dexter. Many of these characters have at least some of their backstory rooted in fact. However, truth can quite often be stranger than fiction...
Archibald Hall went by the more exotic sounding name of Roy Fontaine. Fontaine/Hall was born in Glasgow in 1924 and by the age of fifteen, he was a thief and burglar. In prison, he studied etiquette and the aristocracy and on his release, found work as a butler; and ended up returning to prison numerous times for further thefts.
Hall/ Fontaine progressed from stealing jewellery to murder; and shot, suffocated, strangled, drowned and poisoned his five victims. The tabloid press dubbed him "The Monster Butler" and he was one of the last remaining offenders in England serving a whole life tariff until his death in 2002.
Author Allan Nicol's book The Monster Butler turns the spotlight on Hall's life and tests the veracity of his claims in his own books.

Many may never have heard of Hall. Perhaps unsurprisingly so since at the time of his crimes, the country was still reeling from the murders attributed to the Yorkshire Ripper; and in Scotland in particular, the brutal rape and murder of two teenage girls in Edinburgh, dubbed the "World's End Murders", a case which is still very much an ongoing matter for the Scots legal system more than 30 years later. These crimes undoubtedly eclipsed Hall's own horrific acts.

Nicol has clearly done his homework and researched thoroughly the crimes and claims of Hall. Subsequently, the first quarter of the book succinctly outlines Hall's exploits as detailed in A Perfect Gentleman and To Kill and Kill Again by none other than Hall himself. The lion's share of The Monster Butler is taken up with Nicol's dissection of Hall's assertions and analysis of his crimes, using proven facts and empirical evidence, revealing the truth of the matter and showing Hall not as the self-styled gentleman thief he would have the media and public believe, but as a narcissistic cold-blooded killer who let nothing and no one stand in his way. Hall's victims included a former Member of Parliament and his own brother: the first known "chloroform murder" in British history.
The closing stanza of the book is in effect, a whistle-stop tour of Hall's potential inspirations for his delusions from the silver screen and a brief analysis of his background, attempting to reveal possible reasons for his psychopathic behaviour in later life.

There are those who will not enjoy this book and would prefer the glossier version provided by the killer himself in his own tomes where he paints himself as a victim of circumstance and some sort of Raffles-type criminal. Nicol exposes the truth and dashes many of Hall's claims as exaggerations, boasts or downright lies.

As with Manuel- Scotland's First Serial Killer, Nicol's previous book, the author brings to bear his 30 years experience as a legal practitioner but does not utilise a writing style that is impenetrable or full of so-called "legalese" and at a little over 200 pages long, The Monster Butler is a thorough yet concise study of the life of a man who exemplifies the real horror that exists in society; and the subject matter of which is currently providing the basis of a film starring Dominic Monaghan (Lost, Lord of the Rings, The Day), Gary Oldman (Dracula, Leon, The Fifth Element, Batman Begins) and Malcolm McDowell (Clockwork Orange, Doomsday, Rob Zombie's Halloween) will star as Hall/ Fontaine.
