Well worth reading,

This is a really good little book, not too big to be off putting whilst full to the brim with motivational guidance. Short to the point chapters lead by meditative quotes at the head of each page. The author then elaborates on each of these in a down to earth and personal level and concludes each section with thought provoking questions to galvanise the reader into action. I dare even the most complacent sloth not to be inspired to full fill their dream. If you want to pull yourself out of a rut and move on with daily living in a more positive and happier frame of mind, then read this book.

We all want to find happiness and be free from suffering. Happiness comes from positive mental states and actions and suffering from the opposite. The twelve-part process of dependent arising shows how actions underlain by ignorance propel us from one rebirth into another, keeping us trapped in suffering, and how through understanding reality correctly we can break this cycle. The twelve links that make up this chain of causes and effects are an extension of the four noble truths, the heart of the Buddha's teaching, and demonstrate in particular the connection between true suffering and true sources of suffering. This oral teaching by Geshe Sonam Rinchen is based on the Rice Seedling Sutra and the twenty-sixth chapter of Nagarjuna's Treatise on the Middle Way.

About the Author
Geshe Sonam Rinchen (1933–2013) studied at Sera Je Monastery and in 1980 received the Lharampa Geshe degree. He taught Buddhist philosophy and practice at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India, as well as in dharma centers around the world.

Disappointed

I was very disappointed with this book. With a plain, straightforward title, I had hoped the writing style would be the same. But it seems the author's goal was to shed light on Tibetan sources that dealt with karma, rather than to shed light on karma itself.

I often felt he was explaining about mandalas that symbolize karma, rather than explaining karma.

Karma is a complex topic. I don't feel I understand it any better after having wrestled with this book.

Good introduction on the twelve links of D.O.

If you are looking for a good introduction to the twelve links of dependent origination, this is a very good book. D.O. is a central concept of the Buddha's teachings.

Like many topics in Buddhism, however, one is given a list -- six of this, eight of that, etc. I often find myself asking: "what did the Buddha mean by 'form & function?'" This book tells you in plain English. I'm a big fan of Ruth Sonam's style.

While this book may not answer all of your questions about karma, if you're a beginner like me, it's a good start.

Love it!

One of the best cookbooks I've seen for kids because it's not only chock full of awesome recipes that kids and adults will like but really involves kids in the cooking process. As a mom of three and an aspiring cookbook author, I find that when you cook with your kids and show them what they are eating, they are way more likely to try new foods and enjoy what they've made. I feel like the "family meal" these days has turned into a separate meal for kids and one for the adults but this cook book really makes it easy to cook a meal the whole family will enjoy that is healthy, visually appealing AND tastes great. I also really like that it's a learning experience about different cultures with recipes like "Mmmmoussaka" and "Creamy coconut rice pudding with chunky mango sauce". Good job Ella's Kitchen!

Great Cookbook

I'll admit it - I hate to cook BUT I'm willing to give it a go to ensure my kiddos have good, healthy food on their plates. This cookbook has been a great go-to in our house. Fun, creative, healthy recipes that even a novice like me can make and gets my little guy involved in the fun. He loves helping wash all the veggies and comparing how his dish looks "just like the picture mommy" when we are done. I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone with toddlers looking for some fun new recipes.

An amazing cookbook for families

I purchased this book to help find ideas for kid friendly and tasty meals for the two children of a friend who are staying with us for their summer vacation. While neither are picky eaters, they are both complaining eaters. If it's not a food they have eaten or seen before, it is automatically "gross", "disgusting", "scary", or "eww." No parent likes to hear these words uttered over and over (and over) again. Mealtimes get to be so frustrating that it becomes easier and saner to make separate meals. To be honest, I purchased this book on a whim, and so far, so good. I let each child go through the book and mark recipes they would like to try even if it was something that fell into one of the aforementioned categories because we could talk about substitutions for the offending ingredients. After two weeks and several recipes, it is a pleasure to report that there have been a whole lot less complaints at dinner time. Being able to pick the meal choices has helped reduce the griping about what weird stuff they are being forced to take in for sustenance :) After realizing that how a food is prepared can make it taste good (or bad), they both became a lot more involved in grocery shopping and meal prep. They now are helping to create menus of what we will have for meals each week.

Even though the recipes are simple, the end result is anything but. There hasn't been a bad meal yet made from the recipes in this book. A favorite was the "Mega Mac & Cheese". Instead of making one large dish, each person got to make their own personal mac & cheese by adding in items like ham cubes, peas, broccoli, etc. The sweet & sour shrimp (and chicken) was also a big hit. There are recipes for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and desserts in this book as well. I went ahead and purchased "The Cook Book, the Yellow One" which is full of baking recipes, and it's been a huge hit as well. I sincerely hope that Ella's Kitchen comes out with additional cookbooks. A "green one" to cover produce, and a "purple one" to cover a little bit of everything (In their baby food pouches, Ella's offers a red one, a yellow one, a green one, and a purple one, so I'm guessing that's where the cookbook names have come from.).

This a a great family cookbook whether or not you have picky eaters or kids that willingly eat whatever they are offered. The recipes can be made as is, or very easily changed with additions or substitutions. There is no major prep work required, most of the recipes are quick and simple, and families can have a sit-down meal in the time it takes for pizza to be delivered.

The idea for the volume first came about through a conversation the editors had at the Sustainable Management of Soil Organic Matter Conference in Edinburgh in September 1999. It developed with two symposia on Amazonian dark earths that were held in 2001 in conjunction with the Conference ofLatin Americanist Geographers in Benicassim, Spain, and the Congress of the Brazi lian Archaeological Society in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, respectively, and culmi nated at the First International Workshop on Terra Preta Soils held in Manaus and Santarem, Brazil, in July 2002. As a comprehensive treatment of these dis tinctive anthropogenic soils has never been published, we decided to select papers from these symposia and develop an edited volume. The result con tains the efforts of an international group of distinguished scholars from the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, biology, geography, and soil science. The 15 chapters of this volume provide an array of interesting and comple mentary interpretative stances developed from a diverse body of investigative methodologies. The readerwill note that there are some inconsistencies inter minology and differences in interpretation among the chapter presentations. However, the editors purposely allowed these to remain and retained as much as possible of the authors' own words, since we feit that it was important to maintain the flavor of the symposium atmosphere in this volume and conse quently did not intentionally force standardization upon the authors."

The regenerative qualities identified in prehistoric, anthropogenic Amazonian dark earths suggest that notoriously infertile tropical soils can be greatly improved. Soil enhancement practices by ancient Amerindians allowed them to cultivate the land intensively, without needing to continually clear new fields from forest. As increasing populations place ever greater pressure on tropical forests, this legacy of rich, 'living' soils warrants further study in the search for high-yield, land-intensive, yet sustainable forms of management. The international group of contributors to this volume provides a variety of stances centering on aspects of the origin, distribution, variability, persistence, and use of Amazonian dark earths.

About the Author

Dr. Bruno Glaser is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Soil Science and Soil�Geography at the University of Bayreuth. For over seven years he has been conducting Amazonian dark earth research from a soil science perspective including soil fertility, sustainability, and archaeology aspects.

Dr. William Woods is Professor in the Department of Geography and Director of the Archaeology Program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. For over thirty years he has been conducting prehistoric and historic settlement-subsistence research in the eastern United States, Latin America, and Europe.

SCHOLARLY INTRODUCTION TO AMAZONIAN DARK EARTHS

Amazonian dark earths are a type of soil that has long been known in the Amazon but whose origins have been disputed for many years. Over the last 10-15 years there has been a consensus that these are anthropogenic soils created by agricultural and social methods of old indian cultures in the Amazon.

This book is a compilation of significant academic articles on amazonian dark earths. The most active academics in dark earth study are represented, as well as a good array for sites are studies, from the Tapaj�s, Negro, Solimoes, and Napo river basins. Also studies are done on the composition of these soils and their anti fungicidal and fertile properties. The most interesting feature of these soils is their continued extraordinary fertility even many centuries after they were formed.

Dark earths are an interesting phenomenon that may hold the key to productive agriculture in the Amazon basin, as opposed to common slash and burn techniques that are so devastating to the region.

This book is not a lively account of dark earths, but a scholarly text. For someone interested in dark earths from a less technical background, I recommend "1491" by Charles Mann, in which there is a significant portion on dark earths. This book is for those seeking a deeper knowledge of the subject.

An eclectic selection

This is a collection of just some of Dickinson's nearly 1800 poems which the editor, T.Johnson, published in the "Complete Works of Emily Dickinson". I have both, and have read them extensively. All of my favorites are in this collection. I have read it, and carried it with me, so often that the book is becoming worn. I will replace it, soon. Since E.D. never titled her poems, the collection is indexed by each poem's first line. This has been an effective method for me.

Everyone who aims for the ultimate, the elusive, and the exquisite, ought to pack. The edition is affordable, durable, well-organized, comprehensive . . . and produced with care NOT to alter the form or format of the poems . . . which for some dreadful reason a lot of folks seem to feel compelled to do . . .

For those whose aquiantance with the Belle of Amherst is limited to the classroom edition - i.e., There is no Frigate Like a Book, et al., look again. Dickenson really is the epitome of the rugged individualist - a free spirit - in ways surprisingly opposed to her contemporary, Whitman, she arrives at similar conclusions going no further than her garden. She is the inward sojourner - at home in the harshest tensions and conflicts of the psyche - where her distinctly feminine sensitivity speaks truth in "slant" - as she qualifies her enormous insight.

Most haunting: 'Success is counted sweetest', 'To learn the Transport by the Pain', 'My life closed twice before its close', and, "My Life had stood - a Loaded Gun -". Dickenson laments our sovereign anguish, our exile from the immediate truth or the comprehensive immediacy of truth, the quest for which her poems articulate an urgent hunger enveloped in alternately the most naturistically ambient references or stonily direct terms.

beautiful and essential

Although all talk about 'life after death' is absurd according to the basic axioms of modern, materialistic science, there is still those who like to think deeper over the matter. Not surprisingly Carl Jung - one of the greatest psychologists and philosophers ever - was among those who could see beyond the prejudices of his time.

In this book we get all the colors of Jung's rainbow: the depth of his wisdom, his profound intellectual knowledge, but also his complete inability to see anything in any text except a reflection of his own ideas.

Jenny Yates has made a brilliant selection, mixing the obvious excerpts from Jung's memoires and the introduction to "The Tibetan Book of The Death" with some real gems. She has also written an excellent introduction making this one of the best volumes of the 'encountering Jung' series.

Essential for everyone interested in the more spiritual/mystical side of Jung. As well as for anyone fascinated with the eternal mystery of death and dying.

Several friends have died recently. And I am nearing the last stage of mortality. When I was a university professor, I used Jung's works to teach university classes on the archetypal journey in Literature and Film, including popular culture. Jung's understanding of the unconscious, individuation, and the quaternity came out of life-long study, experiences, and professional interactions with patients and world-class scholars. He was/is an excellent healer and his insights invariably useful. That he viewed death as a goal is worth processing.

Dense prose, esoteric subject matter

The prose is a bit dense and the subject matter sometimes too esoteric to hold my interest. I ended up just skimming most of it. I'm keeping it, however, because of Jung's description of his near-death experience, which is quite interesting.

This book would probably be better titled "Qigong". It contains all 4 sets of Baduanjin, 3 sets of Yijinjing, the 5 animal frolics, Yang Taiji Short form (24 movements), Taiji Sword, Taiji Pushhands, and assorted other exercises.
