Beautiful but not informative

I am a big fan of Elizabeth Messina and I absolutely LOVE the quality of all her images. I bought this book in hopes of learning a lot more detail and technical information about her process, but I was very disappointed.

Her process and philosophy can be summed up in one paragraph. In order to create the soft and luminous look of her images, she basically shoots with film and always uses the natural light available. Nearly ALL of her images are generally shot at the same settings, a wide aperture of f2.0 and 1/60 sec and sometimes f/4 at 1/125 sec...or some variation of this. When working with the light, she always puts the light behind her subject or to the side and exposes for the shadows.

This is pretty much all the technical information you will get from this book. She repeats this same information over and over and over and over again in the subsequent chapters. The rest of the book's content is general and emotional rather than pragmatic, practical and informative. She rarely talks about "HOW" she achieves the look of her images.

For example, nearly every single image in this book will only tell you the camera, film type, and exposure settings used but she leaves out some of the most vital information about how she is metering and exposing each image. The reader can only ASSUME that she is exposing the shadow side of her subject's face every single time. But what is she using to get the meter reading? A handheld spot meter or her camera's center weighted meter? In addition, there is absolutely no mention of how or who is processing her film.

The rest of the book is common sense principles that you don't need to pay for. For instance that you should know your equipment well and experiment with exposures, that you should create a comfortable environment for your subjects in order to evoke a natural emotion etc.

Overall, this would serve as a beautiful coffee display book - but if you're a photographer wanting to learn how she attains the quality of her images, you won't get it. Elizabeth only talks about her love for using natural light, shooting at wide apertures and exposing for shadows.

Jose Villa shoots in a similar way, but I found his book "Fine Art Weddings" (by the same publisher) to be much more pragmatic, informative and useful.

Would have been better as a coffee table book

The author's images are lovely, but I felt this straddled the line between a display book showcasing images, and a book aimed at instruction, and satisfied neither category. The verbiage was general and lightweight, with plenty of fluffy bits about being honored to photograph certain celebrities or how a mother's glow enhances the image. There was virtually no instruction or direction of any kind. Very disappointed and will be re-selling my copy.

Great start, but then too vague.

I read an article in a photographer's magazine about this book, including an excerpt from the book. The information provided in the article was really good, so I ordered the book. I really didn't need to. The most valuable information was provided in the article. While the book covers many subject areas, the information provided is very rudimentory (beginner level) and extremely vague. Each subject only has a handful of paragraphs with extremely basic information.

Also, this author only shoots with film. While the author was kind enough to provide the aperture, film speed (ISO), shutter speed and lens info for each photo in the book, she doesn't indicate how she processed the film which makes a HUGE difference. Not all her photos have the same light or effect, and yet for the majority, the settings are f/2, 400 ISO, 1/60 with a 80mm lens. Plus, film cameras and digital cameras don't always use the same settings for similar effects. And, of course, digital cannot imitate film. With post-processing you can get close, but it's just not the same.

Additionally, if you want to follow the few directions she does provide, be prepared to tote a reflector AND assistant with you for nearly every shot.

This could have been a great book, but instead, it was a disappointment if your are looking for anything but the most basic of instructions.

I've read a borrowed copy of this; seeing that Amazon had it, I bought my own copy - I could see that digesting this material is going to take a while. The text is all here, unabridged. The image quality of the illustrations leaves a lot to be desired with this edition, however. It looks like a second-generation xerox in spots. If this is a problem, do yourself a favor and look for the 1980's hardcover reprint. The images are much better in that one. That said, the substance of this book is thoroughly recommended for the serious student of electrical engineering as well as fans of Tesla. Since this text was written in the late 1800s, and is reprinted here without alteration, the language can sometimes have the density of Shakespeare (without the poetry). Much of the phraseology has passed out of use in the last hundred years. This material is written for the intelligencia of Tesla's era, and not "dumbed down" for this age as many other books are. This is an advantage for someone who wants an authoratative viewpoint on this subject (who more authoratative than Tesla!), but poisonous to the casual reader. Many of the inventions discussed in this book are now commonplace (for instance - the AC induction motor, fully described here, is in use everywhere). Nikola's own depth of understanding of the principles involved make this a thoroughly intense experience for those who are ready for it. Readers who can understand this material are going to experience the devine "Ah-ha" on a regular basis throughout this book. Others will be put to sleep. When I was young I planned to write something along the lines of "an evaluation of Tesla's scientific contributions." Three things stopped me: 1) procrastination, 2) laziness, and 3) the impression that everyone who writes about Tesla will have a "kook" label stick to them for the rest of their lives. Why this is so is interesting, but first about the book. This is a reprint of one published a little more than a hundred years ago, and is most definitely not a "kook book." The author, Mr. Martin, writes a very good description of the nature and significance of Tesla's work up to about 1895. The second part of the book consists of reprints of lectures delivered by Tesla, apparently written by the great man himself. The book contains many good diagrams and illustrations. Both parts have the expected "old-fashioned" feel, but the book gives us a chance to compare Tesla's writing style with that of a contemporary. My own impression is that Tesla's writing style is fairly good as well as interesting, though perhaps even more florid than customary during that age. The book is rather long, and I would venture only two types are likely to read it in entirety: 1) historians of science, and 2) the Tesla sycophants. When the book was originally published Tesla was at the height of his powers. About that time his assertions started to become more and more grandiose, if not fantastic. Following the debacle of his "world wireless power transmission" scheme (just prior to WWI), his reputation suffered. Although he lived until 1941, in later life he tended to be increasingly seen as an eccentric loner and kook. He died in loneliness and poverty. OK, so why does a "kook" label tend stick to anyone who has more than passing interest in Tesla? The first reason is, of course, the fantastic and eccentric claims Tesla made late in life. But by itself this is not enough - after all, even the great Newton dabbled in alchemy and the Book of Revelations late in life. About the Author
Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia in 1856. He emigrated to the United States in 1884 and worked for a short time for Thomas Edison. A pioneer in the field of high-tension electricity, Tesla made many discoveries and inventions of lasting value to the development of radio transmission and electricity, one of the most famous of which was the power system at Niagara Falls. He died in 1943.

Record of a pioneering work

A volume that records the early pioneering work of an electrical genius and inventor, in the same platform of Thomas Edison and Charles Steinmetz, Guglielmo Marconi and George Westinghouse, though never as well known. It shows in great detail not only the works of Tesla's experiments, but will give the reader a glimpse of the amazing range of his thinking. From alternating curent generators to Unipolar generators (generators being just one field of study) to theories and applications of polyphase currents and motors to high frequency and high potential currents, this gives the reader some basic understanding of his pioneering work.
This is not about his life and times, and how this genius could understand the mysteries of electromagnestism but could not help himself when it comes to battling corporations represented by lawyers of JP Morgan. It may seem outdated, since the work was published in the 1890s. But nowhere can you find a book that will explain more about the foundations of his technical and scientific work.

This is the real thing

This book is the compilation of Lectures given by Tesla in the late 1880's where he explains basically everything he has done so far, including real practical advice on how to build motors, coils, etc. Get it and ask yourself howcome he is rarely mentioned in today's textbooks.

This is a very detailed technical writing of Tesla's major inventions, and it was published in 1894 by Electrical Engineer Magazine. If you want to really dig into the essence of Tesla's inventions this is an good source. So is "The Complete Patents of Nikola Tesla" ISBN 1-56619-266-8 published 1994. The number of contributions he made to technology is incredible! This man was truly amazing and probably the greatest genius of all time. It's too bad he was such an eccentric and failed to share more of his work with his peers. Had this happened our world would probably be far more advanced technologically. But the works he did share drastically changed the world for the better. He is finally beginning to get the credit he is due. If he could have appropriately financed his endeavors, there is no telling what might have transpired.

The author of several novels, Devi is best known in India, especially in her native Bengal (Bangladesh). In this collection of three powerful stories, she exposes the conditions of tribal peoples in India. Some readers will not like her journalistic style, but U.S. and Canadian readers will find many painful parallels to Native American fiction in Devi's stories. These three focus on the surviving bonded labor system and its deleterious effects on men and women. In "The Hunt," Devi highlights the role of women resisting not only the destruction of the environment and tribal traditions but also the exploitation of women in postcolonial India. Translator Spivak has published two of Devi's other stories in her collection of essays, In Other Worlds: Essays in Cultural Politics (1987). Imaginary Maps features an interview with Devi and Spivak's critical commentary, which is unfortunately not for beginners. Recommended for more scholarly collections.

Globalism and hidden modern slavery

Spivak presents a collection of three of Devi's stories. Devi, a journalist and "organic intellectual" who has focused largely on women's issues and globalization, serves here to detail the intricacies of global capitalism and alienation. Devi's stories are powerful as works of literature, and heartwrenching as stories representative of true-to-life experiences.

Spivak's introduction is informative, dense and jargony, but of course integral to an understanding of the works at hand. She pleads the American reader to not "museumify" the writings that she translates, that is not to view them as representative cultural artifacts to be observed and objectified. This is an important ideal to abandon when reading Devi's work because it is representative of so much more than words on a page, more than painstakingly detailed characters. Devi's writing is historically and contextually complex, and deserves acclaim for its purpose rather than its literary characteristics.

Accordingly, the language seems bland. Perhaps something was lost in translation, or perhaps this functions to strengthen Devi's ultimate purpose as a writer.

This is a powerful expos� of the effects of global capitalism, told in the form of three colorful, sometimes humorous, sometimes painful, highly readable stories. It gives an insider's look at the current realities faced by tribal peoples in India and challenges the privilege of those who look on or look away without committing to making change.
