About the Author
F. L. Karsner is a fifth generation Floridian who grew up in a rural Panhandle village near Tallahassee. In the late 60's, she married a Navy Ensign and followed him from Florida to the South Pacific. It was in the Navy that she first experienced different lands, peoples, and cultures all of which would forever influence her view of the world. On returning to Florida, she and her husband raised two daughters. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Jacksonville University, became a Registered Nurse, and began to pursue her love of the art and science of medicine. The care of cardiac patients took her from the nursing floor to the cardiac catheterization laboratory to clinical research, ultimately becoming a Certified Clinical Research Professional. To maintain her interest in the arts, she painted, created pottery, and sang in the Sweet Adelines as she moved from Florida to Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and finally back to the Sunshine State. At the millennium, she was President of her own consulting company which provided clinical research services to the domestic and international pharmaceutical markets. Today, she lives with her husband on the Intracoastal Waterway in Ponte Vedra Beach surrounded by the marsh, two rivers, a resident eagle, and untold hawks, egrets, raccoons and slithery friends. Her new novel, HEALER'S MAGICK, is the first in a magical realism series set in the 18th century Scottish Highlands. She can be reached online at flk@flkarsner.com.

Engaging from page one!

An engaging novel from the very first page. F.L. Karsner's ability to have the reader connect with the characters on several layers is part of the charm of this book. The characters are well developed, the plot is engaging and the story moves at a fast pace, all which make the reader want to know what happens next. A real page turner. The protagonist's strenth of character, indepdendence, and nursing skills lend a reality to the book. Then, the element of magic makes it even more exciting. I'd suggest that fans of Scottish heritage or fans of magical realism read this novel because the novel brings to life the unique wonders of the Highlands, its special scents, and scenery. Further, it gives you a glimpse of the admirable traits that are so prevalent in the Scottish folk from early times to the present.

Set in Scotland after the battle of Culloden it’s a captivating read about a healer who lives in a world infused with possibility and magic. Back in the eighteenth - century many though the lead character Caitlin to be a witch with a huge black wolf who is both her companion and protector. The Authors medical background -- brings to life the healers journey. A strong vein of morality at the heart of this storyline, it’s a reminder to show compassion to one another including our friends in the animal kingdom. Once I picked the book up I couldn’t put it down.

Excellent tale of characters' adventures and challenges through every imaginable hurdle one can imagine. Healer's Magick is just that. . . . MAGIC!!!
The story moves quickly and you cannot wait to pick up the book next time to see what is now going on. Great attention to detail but not so much that it bogs down. . . the pace continues throughout all the way to the end. Can't wait for Karsner's next book to see what happens to these colorful characters full of life, courage and charity.

About the Author

Tai-Ran Hsu, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, San Jose State University, California. Dr. Hsu is the author of the earlier edition of this book, which is considered one of the bestselling textbooks on the subject of MEMS.

This is an excellent resource for MEMS background information

New in this edition are micro-fabricated gyroscopes and microphone elements, the latter of which is already appearing in consumer devices. The second edition updates modernize what was already an excellent book.

I'd recommend that if you're not sure about spending the money on the book that you use amazon's search inside this book and take a bit of a look. Much as you'd do in a bookstore, thumb through, search for a couple of items of interest, that sort of thing.

Professor Close researches, teaches, and serves in the marketing community. A main interest is in event marketing–namely how consumers’ experiences at sponsored events influence attitudes and consumer behavior. This research explains: engaging consumers with events, uncovering drivers of effective event sponsorships, how entertainment impacts affect towards events/purchase intention towards sponsors, the role of sponsor-event congruity, and why consumers may resist events. A scholarly book edited with Lynn Kahle, Ph.D., Consumer Behavior Knowledge for Effective Sports and Event Marketing (Routledge, 2011) synthesizes thinking in the area of sports and events.

Synergistically, Professor Close researches consumer experiences with electronic marketplaces–online experiences, and how they interplay with on-ground events. One of the goals of this current volume is to bring forward new thought in this topic. Her research ties theory with implications for consumers, society, or consumer-focused business practice. Professor Close has contributed over a dozen peer-reviewed research publications and book chapters. These appear in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Advances in Consumer Research, Journal of Advertising Research, and Journal of Business Research, among others. This research has been featured on CBS, and in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, New Scientist, The St. Petersburg Times, and The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Where creating knowledge via research is important, Professor Close believes that disseminating knowledge is crucial to move the field forward and to inspire young minds. She is currently teaching Integrated Communication Management, and she has taught MBA Market Opportunity Analysis, Marketing Management, Advertising, Integrated Marketing Communication, International Marketing, Strategy, and Sales/Promotions courses. A goal of this teaching is to spark student interest in the fields of advertising and marketing by involving students with research projects, co-collaborating on new ideas, and hosting esteemed marketing executives. She takes pride in engaging students’ thinking in marketing theories and applications, especially in the local entertainment and technology economies.

For community service, Professor Close serves the local and national marketing and academic communities. Nationally, she serves as President of the American Marketing Association’s Consumer Behavior division (CBSIG.org). Involved with doctoral education, she serves on the Board of Directors to current doctoral students AMA’s doctoral student group. She serves various leadership roles for the Association for Consumer Research, Society for Marketing Advances, and Academy of Marketing Science.

Professor Close brings experience as a marketing research consultant, as she has contributed marketing research projects for: Hallmark, Coca-Cola, Dodge, Ford, Cingular, New Media Institute, Harvey’s Grocery, United Community Bank, AT&T, Fashion Show Mall, Suzuki, Tour de GA, Road Atlanta, Red Rock Country Club, and Lexus.

Prior to joining Texas Advertising, Professor Close served the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s business faculty for five years. Prior to that, she studied advertising and marketing at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication (ABJ 1997; MMC 2000) and the Terry College of Business (Ph.D. 2006). Beyond her passion for advertising and marketing, she enjoys spending time with her husband Ben and baby Corbyn, playing tennis, volunteering, and travelling.

Nuggets of Leadership Wisdom

Bill's latest book is a kind of distillation of his learnings, values, and leadership principles from 30+ years at Willow. Written in 76 short, concise chapters, "Axiom" is both inspiring and instructive. Each chapter contains a principle, wrapped in a slogan (or "Axiom") that Bill has coined to summarize a specific facet of leadershipo. The chapters are self-contained, like Proverbs. You can read one, put the book down and go apply the principle. No chapter takes more than 10 minutes to read, but each will take months (if not years) to fully implement.

Axiom is one of the most practical books on church leadership in our day. I found myself putting most chapters into practice the same day I read them. Those familiar with WillowWorld will recognize many (if not all) the book's principles from previous Leadership Summits or Hybels' sermons. For me, the book was both a great review and a kick in the seat to go lead better, and lead better in specific ways.

Axiom reminded me once again of the importance of leading daily, improving myself and my church regularly, not settling for incremental growth, and the absolute necessity of church leaders fighting for the advancement of the kingdom. I recommend this book to all churchworld leaders.

Speed of the Leader, Speed of the Team

Bill Hybels revs up in chapter one--and the good stuff is still kicking in chapter 68, "Read All You Can." He writes, "I have little patience with leaders who get themselves into leadership binds and then confess that they haven't read a leadership book in years. If you're a serious-minded leader, you will read." In the book's foreword, Henry Cloud writes, "Great leaders do their homework so that weariness and unsteadiness are kept at bay."

Amen to that vote for lifelong learning, also affirmed in the "Book Bucket" one of 20 buckets in my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit. Consequently, I was eager to read the latest book from Bill Hybels, one of the most gifted leaders I've ever met. Axiom, with 76 pithy leadership proverbs, doesn't disappoint.

"Speed of the leader, speed of the team," was and is one of Bill's oft-mentioned axioms. Few leaders make this pronouncement because the camera immediately focuses in on them. As the first president of Willow Creek Association, I watched Hybels up close and he always shared that core value confidently, yet humbly. His walk and his talk backed it up. He writes, "If you cannot say, `Follow me,' to your followers--and mean it--then you've got a problem, a big one."

He elaborates. "Follow my values. Follow my integrity. Follow my work ethic, my commitment, and my communication patterns. Fight as I fight. Focus as I focus. Sacrifice as I sacrifice. Love as I love. Repent as I repent. Admit wrong as I admit wrong. Endure hardship as I endure hardship." Then he concludes this one-page proverb with the whole point of it. "When requisite actions back them up, these are the words that set followers' hearts soaring."

Scan the 76 mini-chapter titles and you'll be pulled into the street-smart, God-smart wisdom. They include: Language Matters, Make the Big Ask, Hire Tens, The Dangers of Incrementalism, Never Say Someone's No for Them, The Tunnel of Chaos (a key idea in my Culture Bucket), Disagree Without Drawing Blood, Admit Mistakes and Your Stock Goes Up, and Arrive Early or Not at All.

Warning! Don't carelessly toss these axioms into your repertoire without understanding the biblical and leadership context. In my days at Willow, "Don't Screw Up" was a common benediction at meetings--but it created anxiety, not blessing. The leader knew how to communicate it, but the lieutenants didn't.

a concise toolbox for any leader

Leadership is no easy task. In the midst of all the hard work and busyness, an ordinarily effective leader can become careless, frustrated, or downright hopeless. Bill Hybels who has spent three decades building one of the most successful churches in America, has dedicated his life to developing successful ministry leaders around the world. Too often he has seen churches and ministries fail due to a considerable lack of quality leadership. God's work demands our best.

Hybels attempts to break leadership into small, manageable leadership truths. Leadership Axioms aims to provide leaders with a toolbox of handy leadership proverbs that he or she can apply to almost any leadership challenge.

Obviously, these axioms will not solve every single leadership dilemma. The leader needs to take this information, digest it, and use it appropriately. At times the axioms seem to contradict each other (see chapters Language Matters and Just Say It), but in the end, these words will ring true to any leader. Having this reference on your shelf would be a good idea.
