Excellent content, but rife with editing issues

I would really have liked to give this book at least 4 stars for the content, but the editing, or lack thereof, makes it very hard to read. The errors seem to get more numerous toward the end of the book, as though whoever was doing the proofreading just burned out. There are run-on sentences sometimes 5 or 6 lines long that have an error toward the end that causes you to reread the sentence several times to get the point.

Having said that, the breadth and depth of the information is impressive, without getting so geeky that it requires a PhD to comprehend.

It’s a small thing - at least on the surface - but the security checklists in Appendix A look very good, and I plan on crosschecking our existing checklists against them, to make sure we have covered everything.

Mixed results

Glaring errors once the author leaves the realm of SQL. Anybody who configures a firewall like the author recommends will be wide open to attack. (permit any as first statement?) And users from external domains can go into local groups in trusting domains. Some sound ideas within the chapters specific to SQL Server. Not much beyond the recommendations of DISA's Security Technical Implementation Guidelines (STIGs to you DoD bubas) but a few good insights.

Pretty twisted, but also pretty fun

Nadia Nightside is a pretty easy author to recommend if you like straightforward, sexy stories. This one takes the view all the way from the girl's perspective which I enjoyed a lot. You're with her as she sees the other two of the “threesome” find out about their lust for each other, and you're in her shoes again as she's seduced into joining them for their fun. Very sexy scenes. Good writing. Good characters.

About the Author

Alexander Stanoyevitch is a professor at California State University–Dominguez Hills. He completed his doctorate in mathematical analysis at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has held academic positions at the University of Hawaii and the University of Guam. Dr. Stanoyevitch has taught many upper-level classes to mathematics and computer science students, has published several articles in leading mathematical journals, and has been an invited speaker at numerous lectures and conferences in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His research interests include areas of both pure and applied mathematics.

NOT easy reading - SOLID overview

I am over one third through a first reading of this text. I have a general methodology for reading texts or reference texts. First, a quick read through. Next a read through with note taking. Lastly, a final read through with additional note taking and working of exercises.

I bought this text because I am taking a college course in Discrete Structures this Fall, 2011, for my major in Computer Science. The course has no assigned text per se. Hence, the need for a comprehensive text to scare the bejeebers out of me, and get a good, solid grasp of what the topic encompasses. This text definitely does both.

This text is considered a one-semester course. It covers basic Number Theory, Probability and Statistics, Cryptography and Cryptanalysis, and much more.

Since it includes theory as well as practical exercises for the student, and requires the student to prove some of the theorems, it might be classified as an upper division text for the undergraduate student after completion of a course in mathematical proofs or similar.

Regardless, this text challenges me to learn beyond my comfort zone. Yes, it is intimidating. Yes, some of the material is beyond my current training and exposure. And, definitely, YES, I will learn more each time I read and study through it.

As I am always looking for texts to become a permanent addition to my library, this text definitely qualifies for permanent status. It will sit very nicely next to my:"The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-4A Boxed Set, Donald Knuth".

I believe this text deserves closer examination as a course text or reference text for your library.

His mom, Danielle Steel, takes us through her 19 twister-like years with Nick in a memoir more affecting than her potboiler novels. Like his AWOL addict father, Nick had good looks, bad behavior, and a yen for the feminine. Five days before he died, he phoned a woman he saw in a centerfold and had a new girlfriend by nightfall. But his fun was ever haunted by manic depression. At age 11, he was a bed wetter who ate all the Tylenol and Sudafed in the house. A Touching Tribute

I am 14 years old and just finished this story. It's always sad when someone loses their life, especially if they are young and seem to have a bright future ahead of them. Danielle Steel did a wonderful job telling the harrowing tale of her baby boy. (If you read some of the other reviews, some say that Ms. Steel only wrote the book for money. I disagree completely and don't understand where they get off saying that because the proceeds go to the Nick Traina Foundation and the sorrow of losing a child is not something that is taken lightly, esecially by the mother) I saw an ad for His Bright Light and decided to read it to learn about this serious illness. It taught me a lot about how manic depressives act and what goes on inside their heads. At the end I cried when I found out how he died and the events of the days before he did. Normally Amazon recommendations irritate the Hades out of me, but in this one instance, my interest in sailing, my annoyance at Danielle Steel's novel Miracle, and process of post-humous publication combined and encouraged me to read this book. I know some people poo-poo this book as something she shouldn't have written, but I'm glad she did. Some families bottle up their grief, and never tell a soul. Danielle does what writers do. Write about it. It was encouraging to see a parent who respects her child's songwriting, his creativity, and the personality behind his works. She dedicates the book to trying to explain the hardships that Nick went through that so many didn't see. It's a disease, and a deadly one, and some are not cured. This book is about him, unlike other books by parents of children who died by suicide, who write books entirely about themselves (ex. Theology and the Disciplines of the Foreign Service: The World's Potential to Contribute to the Church) and dedicate it to their child to promote a religion that he didn't even subscribe to.

Although I don't think she meant this to happen, this book also gave me a little bit of insight into why she wrote Miracle the way she did, and the piece of Nick and herself that is in it. Still irritated that it isn't really about sailing, but at least I understand now that it wasn't really supposed to be.

In some cultures, there are three forms of death. The first is when the body dies. The second death is when one is interred. The third death is when no one mentions their name ever again. I'm glad Danielle wrote this book, because it encourages people to remember him, and not just him, but his works.

I am a great fan. This book was not one of them. I admire you for putting up with so much of Nick. He consumed your life and as you said throughout the book and didn't spend enough time with your other children. I was almost relieved for you when he died as you were able to spend more time with your other kids and not have to deal with all the chaos that came with Nick. with all tech

Srinivas Rao Adige, educated at the Doon School, Dehradun and St Stephen's College, New Delhi, has worked for the Indian Administrative Service. A keen student of Indian history, he combines his passion for the past with his flair for writing. Adige is married and lives in New Delhi. The Mughal High Noon is his first novel.

Nice historical setting for a light, easy novel. Good style, easy flow of words to describe the settings of Mughul Court or a battle.
