Witkin’s photographs have made a colossal impact upon contemporary culture, influencing artists such as the Chapman Brothers and Erwin Olaf, musicians such as Diamanda Gal�s and Trent Reznor, and the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, among many others. Vanitas provides a cross-section of the artist’s work from the 1970s to the present. Not for the faint of heart

Not for the faint of heart. Brutal yet beautiful. Morbid imagery, but not disgusting or distasteful. Joel-Peter Witkin does use real deceased human subjects in his photo surreal scenes, but it's not typically gory or focused on gore, blood and guts. It's more in the mind set of seeing the beauty in the decay. Life is not only about living, death is a part of life and life is a part of death, all of which can be seen as beautiful since you cannot have one without the other. It's complicated imagery that makes you think deeply, and sometimes cringe.

I would call it modern fine art / modern photography, but the imagery is timeless. He does do some post work in Photoshop or some other photo editing application to finalize many of his masterpieces.

JOEL-PETER WITKIN: VANITAS was published last year in the Czech Republic. Conceived as a way to allow Witkin to comment on the creative nidus of his own creations this monograph presents a collection of Witkin's latest photographs, his retablos, created over the last three years. The monograph, in English and in Czech, with a text by the art historian Otto M. Urban summarizes the development of Witkin's life and work.

Witkin is a Brooklyn born photographers who stylized black and white portraits focus on still life and portraiture and stirs up controversy whenever they are shown. Witkin's black-and-white portraits and still-lifes of hermaphrodites, body parts, severed heads, and mutilations and religious themes are the subjects and objects Witkin presents to us. For Witkin, the goal is simple: "I wanted my photographs to be as powerful as the last thing a person sees or remembers before death." Morbid to some maybe, but he photographs his subjects beautifully creating an atmosphere of decadence. His influences come from his appreciation of Goya, Odilon Redon Hieronymus Bosch, and Giotto. This book is a survey of his work from the 1970s to present day and presents a collection of Witkin's latest photographs, his retablos, created over the last three years.

The American photographer Joel-Peter Witkin, born 1939 in Brooklyn and now living in Albuquerque, NM, has been one of the most outstanding representatives in the world of photography since the end of the 1970s. His stylized black and white images are included in all major photography collections around the world. Witkin focuses mainly on still life and portraiture. His work presents a unique view of the contemporary world and he often works populated with bizarre creatures and themes have been described as `shock fodder' to the religious right due to references to religious themes (the crucifixion, saints, etc.) as well as to classical painting (Francisco Goya, Odilon Redon, Joan Mir�, Hieronymus Bosch, etc. Also thanks to the work of Joel-Peter Witkin the concept of decadence and the decadent has recently emerged more and more in relation to contemporary art. The book represents a cross section of the artist's work since the 1970s to the present. In addition to photographs, lesser known drawings and paintings are also included in the book.

In Witkin's words, placed throughout the book, `My art is the way I perceive and define life. It s sacred work, since what I make are my prayers. I am not looking for sensations, even though I work with very striking elements. I merely want to express myself. Even though the elements may vary, the results should still aim to celebrate life and the positive side of it. They should educate us and lead us to greater love and mercy I only take photographs of what I believe in: if I show death, that is because even in that condition I recognize this power of reality that no imagined work can reproduce. I believe that Christ was a man who transcended this bodily form and became God: or to put it in terms of my personal belief - God placed on the man called Jesus the mask of Christ!'

This volume, perhaps more than any of his other monographs, reveals the artist behind the strange creations that have flowed from his creative mind throughout his career. Great book for my collection

Joel-Peter Witkin is a master at "out-of-the-box" thinking with a great sense of humor. Some of the art is not for the "faint of heart" but ALL of his art is inspiring and worth exploration. His art is beautifully executed as well, as is this book which is well done and the images well reproduced. I am delighted to add it to my collection.

About the Author
NG KENG TIONG has worked as a Principal Engineer at Singapore Technologies (ST) Electronics Limited, a subsidiary of ST Engineering. Upon graduation from the Singapore Polytechnics, he signed up with the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) as an aircraft technician and worked in the E-2C Hawkeye repair bay, servicing the aircraft's avionics using automated test systems (CAT-IIID and RADCOM) and other in-house test equipment. Upon invitation, he left the RSAF after his first contract and joined his present company, doing test program development and PCB diagnostics using Schlumberger S700 series testers. Since then, he has worked on other test platforms such as the Teradyne Spectrum™ 8800 series, the Westest-DATS/2000 test station, and some special-to-type-equipment (STTE) of similar nature. He also has experience in logic simulation using HHB Systems CADAT™ software and the CATS- 10000™ hardware modeler, as well as Teradyne's LASAR™ simulator. He has worked with engineers from companies such as Elbit and Thales, and recently completed two test benches for testing the transmitter and servo amplifier control of a naval sonar system. In the course of his work, he encountered many printed circuit boards and electronic modules without schematic diagrams or documentation. That started him on the journey of doing PCB reverse engineering, in part or total, to perform the necessary troubleshooting for repair. Over time, he has refined the skill into an art for which this book is all about.

Worth every cent and more ! A most excellent book

I purchased this book after having discussed it with the author on the EEVBlog web forum. I have been reverse engineering complex printed circuit boards for many years, and enjoy the challenge. The author of this book has similar experience and it shows in his excellent coverage of the topic. He has correctly identified the key aspects of such a task and the need for the methodical & disciplined approach in order to achieve success. This book would suit anyone who has an interest in the reverse engineering of PCB's, and even those with previous experience will likely learn from this book. I certainly did ! There is no requirement for complex or expensive tools beyond the basics normally found on an electronics workbench, but MS Visio is recommended for the documentation. Visio is not essential to success however, and should not put buyers off of this book. I know of no other book that covers this topic so well for those starting out on PCB reverse engineering. The author writes in an easy to read fashion and offers purchasers of his book free downloads of additional useful material via his web site. The quality of materials used in the production of this book are excellent and it should have a long life in the lab. All who have seen my copy of the book have been very impressed with it. Highly recommended to those embarking on PCB reverse engineering, both beginners and the experienced.

Reverse engineering PCB's is to electronic circuit boards what hacking is to computer software...something people do, but no one admits to doing it, LOL.
Mr Ng not only does it, but he lays out a very clear and systematic approach to the entire process. I am self-taught in this field, and it was a real joy to find that someone had actually written an entire book on the subject. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic.

Growing up in midtwentiethcentury Italy

Brilliant, modest but very famous author, who is able to write with humor about growing up in her brilliant, illustrious family. Not ashamed to admit failings of herself or family members. Her Italian is accessible to the intermediate reader. Many words are not in the dictionary, however, as they are specific to her family. She was clearly a nerd growing up, home schooled until middle school, not ever very energetic but left a legacy of stories about life under Mussolini, WWII, & beyond, interacting with major literary stars in the postwar period. Interesting that she is known as a Jewish author in Italy, but her Jewish father had no interest in religion nor Jewish heritage as far as I can tell, was an atheistic, focussed intellectual with no interest in the arts. Her mother was a non-practicing catholic and probably a culture vulture. The family hobnobbed with the Italian intelligentsia, which included many of Jewish ancestry. Her writing reflects much of life in midcentury Italy & seems to be known by all Italians.

Just out of focus, beyond the brightest light of the narrative, are the events of the times -- the rise of fascism, the Second World War, the Mussolini racial laws. In between are the family's experiences -- births, deaths, marriages -- and characters -- her parents, siblings, friends, husband. The seemingly inessential turns out to have great import, and the incredible understatement that results from not focussing on great events paradoxically gives those events an overwheliming reality.

Not focused enough

I was somewhat disappointed by this book, which is supposed to be Ginzburg most famous novel. Even though it is essentially a biography I still expected it to have a logic plotline, such as was the case in let's say Frank Macourt's Angela's Ashes. In Frank Macourt's memoir it was clear where the plot starts and how it is directed. Lessico famigliare mainly deals with the small details of life. For example, her mother's showering with cold water or Natalia being unable to give orders to her housekeeper. There is nothing wrong with giving those details, which could make the novel more human and vital. But when there is not much more than details the reader is bound to feel confused, or at least I was. It is basically a matter of proportion. She spends more time on describing her mother taking piano lessons than on her own entire married life!

I can honestly say that I disagree with the person that gave this book 1 star. Pastor Jim sent a free copy to me based on a relatives request and this book has changed my life and I made a nice donation to his ministry upon my increase. So Pastor Jim's humble act of generosity has been returned to his ministry ten fold...just like the Bible says. If you read and apply everything in this book in addition to your daily walk with God, it will change your life! Pastor Jim is not saying there is a "shortcut" he is saying there is a Covenant that God made for all believers that they should not lack or want in any area of their lives, money, health, happiness and this is what the book shares and how to apply that blessing to your life. There is power in speaking Gods words! I would highly recommend this book and I am just one humble person who was given a free copy by a relative and its has changed my life forever. This is one of those books that comes along once in a while that is life changing.

If you use LaTeX every day, this is the book to get

There are easier introductions to LaTeX (including many on-line from various university courses) but when it comes to doing difficult things this is the book. I have both the German version (3 volumes) and the 3rd English version of this. Typical German thoroughness -- a very extensive index, lists of commands and symbols, clear and concise explanations. As another reviewer says, it's not for the beginner. You can indeed learn LaTeX from this book (first several chapters are simpler) but it is oriented to the person using LaTeX all the time. Especially nice are the detailed explanations of tables, page layout, math mode (both standard LaTeX and AMSLaTeX). There's no disguising that it takes time and effort to get into LaTeX, but the results are well worth it. When you have a difficult usage question, this book will help you find the answer in minimum time.

The best guide for everyday use

For anyone coming to LaTeX from a background in mathematics many sources of help are available, but it is more difficult for someone coming to it from a feeling of dissatisfaction with the results obtainable with typical WYSIWYG word processors. When you are surrounded by people who think that Word is wonderful and that its equation editor can handle any equations you need, getting to the point with LaTeX where you can use it to advantage may seem more trouble than it is worth. You will probably start with Leslie Lamport's LaTeX: A Document Preparation System, but although that is a good and authoritative start it is not really enough, as there is a great deal more to know than can be found in a short book, and in particular you need to know about all that is now available in the form of packages.

Fortunately there are some excellent sources of more detailed information, and two of these stand out: Kopka and Daly's "Guide to LaTeX" and Mittelbach and Goossens's LaTeX Companion. I acquired both of these about six months ago, but decided to defer posting reviews until I had discovered by experience which of them I actually used more, and the winner is clearly Kopka and Daly, mainly because it is much the easier to find one's way around. It is quite adequate as a complete guide to LaTeX (i.e. you don't really need to start with Lamport, though it's probably a good idea if you do), as the opening chapter on "basics" really is about basics, and the book progresses from there in a reasonably gentle way.

Great reference for Latex

I think that this book is a great reference for those that have already some familiarity with Latex. It covers pretty much any aspect that one needs to be effective in Latex. One of the best parts about this book is that there is an appendix which has the syntax of most commands in Latex. I do not own the third edition but I have done a side by side comparison of it with the fourth edition. In general the material all the same minus some formatting differences. I noticed that one chapter did not make it from the third edition to the fourth which was on class writing. Instead a chpater on modifying pre-existing classes was included.

If you already own the third edition, then this may not be as substantial revision to warrant the purchase of this edition, but I do like the new layout of this edition compared to the third.

BEWARE. I do not think that this is best book for those begining Latex. Instead, I recommend "Learning Latex" by D. F. Griffiths and D. J. Higham. This book has the Latex code written right next to how it would appear.

About the Author
Dr. Woodrow C. Monte has decades of experience in food science andnutrition as a researcher, teacher, inventor, industry consultant andconsumer advocate who is committed to food additive safety and theprevention of food borne diseases. For over 30 years he has studied the link between artificial sweeteners and the diseases of civilizationincluding Alzheimer's, Heart Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, numerous forms of cancer, Autism and other Birth Defects.Dr. Monte's testimony before Congress was instrumental in the prevention of Sulfites from receiving status of US FDA GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) and the implementation of mandatory labeling for most foods thatcontain this dangerous additive.Through his research, Dr. Monte has been awarded 22 US patents. He hasshared his technical expertise during hundreds of television and radioappearances including a special feature on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and 60 Minutes. He is the author of numerous scientificpublications and the book While Science Sleeps: A Sweetener Kills.Dr. Monte is a dedicated scientist with both a Ph.D. and M.S. in FoodScience and Nutrition and a B.S. in Biology. My daughter died

This book helps me better understand some of the following. My teenage daughter started drinking diet-colas with aspartame, and soon after she started having seizures. That lead to an eternal stream of medications and their side affects, including blurred erratic speech when to many pills were prescribed. She kept drinking that stuff. I begged her to stop. She moved on to bi-polar depressions and screaming rages. When she was in her 30s, a Harvard professor, who created Epilepsy.com, told me 'aspartame definitely lowers the threshold for seizures'. More begging. I couldn't get her to quit. Addiction, I guess, like cigarettes and alcohol. She became evermore mentally unstable. Simultaneous care from a neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychologist. She received government financial assistance. Finally I felt guilty at feeling relieved when she died in her late 30s, with no quality of life left. 20 years of suffering. Two car crashes with my grandchildren in the car. Tears. Pain. Death for my daughter. At one time she was so lovely and happy. She gave that drink to her grandson. He started having rages in the classroom and at home. The father, grandmother, and me, the grandfather, took control with constant adult supervision. My wonderful grandchild never had another rage after no more drinking aspartame in the diet-cola. No more car crashes with adult supervision and her not being alone with the children. I so wish as a young parent I had been able to understand what's in this book. I'll never understand why the FDA allows aspartame to be placed in 1,000s of food and beverage products. I could ramble on, like this, in tears, for such a long time... need to go think about something else.

The truth about aspartame is finally revealed

This book was authored by a scientist who initially fought aspartame approval by the FDA. He reveals how aspartame was quickly approved after Pres. Reagan appointed Donald Rumsfeld to the cabinet. Mr. Rumsfeld was the head of the Searle company who invented aspartame. Shortly after that , aspartame was approved as a food additive. He shows how the increase in Alzheimer's, MS, autism, breast cancer, and several other diseases coincide with the release of aspartame in sodas. This book is a must read for anyone who is concerned about the increased rates of Alzheimer's ,breast cancer , lupus,and all these other diseases of civilization.

Couldn't put this down- all yellow highlighted- Truly & expertly explains in very logical science a great deal of our modern medical problems & the culpability (to the point of criminal) of major government agencies & their collusion with Pharacuetical/ big business companies-- If only I had had this info before I was drinking Diet Coke @ day & using the ditto machine as a teacher 1968-2002-fortunately I was an elementary music teacher- which limited my use of "ditto" to printing programs couple times a year- there was a time when I thought I had MS- had some of symptoms- + a breast cancer scare from a false mammogram - was advised to stop caffeine pop drinks- completely stopped drinking all pop 15 yrs ago- the severe dizziness/ eye weirdness went away-

Gerard Colby is a writer, investigative journalist, and educator. He has written for the North American Newspaper Alliance, the Nation, the Los Angeles Times, In These Times, and TowardFreedom.com. Colby has taught the history of the political economy of Central America at Burlington College and political science and international economics at Johnson State College in Vermont, and is currently studying for a master’s degree in American history at the University of Vermont.

you really should read the updated version of this book

Perhaps the Du Pont's were happy this book went mysteriously into "out of print limbo" after the first printing quickly sold out. .... But before it vanished it was one fantastic popular and well researched book in 1974. The same thing happened again in 1984 when it was reprinted, then vanished from store shelves!! Anyone who can should grab and read this updated "kindle only" version. You simply do not find this kind of information else ware (and who knows, it may soon vanish too??)

This content of this book goes beyond the financial antics of a rich family and into the people (many named Du Pont but others to) who used there amazing wealth to political power, then steered the path of this and other nations (often into profitable wars). Hitler would have a hard time doing some of the things he did without friends like the Dupont family. Actually war/conflict and banking control has been very good for the Du Ponts going back to before the civil war. It seems to be better for them today in this age of credit card monopolies world banks and tax exempt but very powerful corporate foundation control Geo-politics groups. How these things are run is a lesson we all need to learn. But except in rare books like this one, your just not going to find such information.

All the Dirty Little Secrets the Du Ponts don't want you to know

The Du Ponts, who are known for their chemical company have been part of the American landscape from almost the beginning. The family came to America to get away from the violence and persecution related to the French Revolution. They settled in the State of Delaware where they based their first industry manufacturing gunpowder. By the Civil War, they profited from one of the first “Trusts”, as they tried to control the market for gunpowder used in bullets and artillery.

When the family split over control of the company, Alfred du Pont set-up in Florida and help to make Palm Beach the resort of the rich and powerful. During WW One they were accused of war profiteering, during the ‘30s they sold munitions to Chinese Warlords and the Nazis. After gaining a major stake in General Motors they were in the forefront of fighting unionization and the use of strikebreakers.

Being staunch Republicans, they spent millions trying to stop Roosevelt from becoming and staying President. They funded volunteers and organizations advocating the defunding of many of Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation and reforms. They have been a major power in the State of Delaware, both as politicians (such as Governor Pierre (Pete) du Pont) and backers of the Republican Revolution (in 1994) under Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

The Du Pont Company has spent millions over the years trying to undermine environmental regulations and regulatory bodies. They have been accused of cover-ups of the dangers of Freon’s effect on the ozone layer, pollution of the air and water near their manufacturing plants and the use of paid specialist to act as experts at government hearings. Little of what they do ends up in the news due the use of money to pay-off many of those affected by their pollution problems.

Colby spent years interviewing ex-employees and discredited whistle-blowers as well as a large legal team that bury people under paper and counter-lawsuits. At one point Colby was subjected to this legal nightmare when he filed a federal lawsuit against DuPont. He documents the way Du Pont treats people who cross them, as well as the feuds that have erupted among the family.

About the Author
David Petersen was born in 1977. His artistic career soon followed. A steady diet of cartoons, comics and tree climbing fed his imagination and is what still inspires his work today. He is a three time Eisner Award winner for his work on his Mouse Guard series. David received his BFA in Printmaking from Eastern Michigan University where he met his wife Julia. They continue to reside in Michigan with their dogs Autumn and Bronwyn

David Petersen's Mouse Guard series continues to deliver quality stories and fantastic art. In this volume, we have particularly wonderful background stories for Kenzie, Saxon, and Sadie.

If you're a fan of adventure tales at all, please read the Mouse Guard series - you'll be glad you gave it a chance and will be clamoring for the next available volume.

Pretty good read

I'm a big fan of the Autum and Winter books. I thought this was a clever venue to share short and back stories about characters we all know. I think, given the "fables" approach, this would even work as a stand alone for those not familar with the series. For parents with kids of age, I could imagine these shorts could work for bed time stories.

The story of the crab, the snake, and the owl is probably my favorite, reminding me of classic "clever little hero out smarts big baddies" fables.

For those who have read Peterson's prior works, I have to say I prefer the longer stories. That's not to say these are lacking, just that when I get a book I like, I want more. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because I am comparing to the other works.

All in all, a good read, especially for parents with children

All Hail the Mouse Guard

Mouse Guard is the best kept secret in comics. You would think SOMEONE would have made an animated film of this by now! If you like Fables, Sandman or any of the myriad of independent comics that have a fantasy slant to them, this should be right up your alley.
