Had an affair? Get this book now!

Divorce is caused by us putting the puzzel pieces together the wrong way. Boy is that the truth. Mark Smith helps post affair couples recover by going back to their childhood and bringing them up to the present to see how the drama has played out and how the puzzel pieces were put together in a way to have an affair happen. He says to 'seek to learn all you can from the experience [of the divorce]'. I like the stress on interdependence as the goal for a healthy relationship. This is a great book for navigating marital problems. The author shouts "you married them for a reason" and "the universe wants to heal our wounds"! Reading this no-nonsense hard-hitting approach to taking responsibility for your own life and for your own marriage. "The Secret to Healing Your Marriage After An Affair" is filled with wisdom, humor, fun, drama, pain, and hope. This books takes a 'therapeutic' approach and model for marriage--"we married the right person"---TO DEAL WITH and heal OUR OWN ISSUES. Marriage is for healing childhood wounds. This approach is taken by Imago therapists, Bowen Family systems therapists and others. A great approach to healing and making real changes that last. Mark Smith shares very personal stories from his own life and from the lives of those he has helped. My favorite line in the book is--"Anyone who has ever been in a relationship has been in therapy even if they have never darkened the door of a therapist's office". And I liked the warning when a spouse or partner starts talking about unmet needs--"Treat [those] words about unmet needs like an emergency siren." The author believes we are like and imprinted by our family-of-origin, this insight can be useful to getting unstuck in marriages and moving beyond a divorce. Great tips in the book.

This is a tough subject!

Thanks for this book ... affairs are one of the worst forms of betrayal and they cause so much destruction. Affairs are taken so personally by the one that has been cheated on and triggers so many issues, however, affairs are only a symptom of the bigger problem inside the one doing the cheating. We all have our ways of self-sabotage, and having an affair is just another (larger) way to push the person you love away because you don't feel good enough or because shame has infested the marriage. You get to the source of the problem (which is usually not the affair) and fix something much deeper in order for couples to not only heal from the destruction an affair can cause, but also heal the inner soul that caused that action in the first place.

This Will Always Stay With Me...

I read the original copy and am resubmitting my review. This book has stayed with me all this time. I was originally interested because Chelsea Bruck, my 22 year old "down the line" cousin who grew up three houses away from me, went missing after a Halloween party. Her family has no idea where she is nor do the police. It is like she just disappeared. Her family is hoping she is still alive and believe she is part of a human trafficking ring. I pray she is not living the hell Emily Goodwin depicts in her book.

I am truly speechless right now. I still can't wrap my mind around what I read. I'm in shock and am deeply saddened that horrible things like this exist in our world.

Stay delves into the corrupt, evil world of kidnapping, child slavery, and human trafficking. Readers follow Addie's nightmarish journey as she is kidnapped, forced to live in deplorable conditions, and made to do unconscionable acts. Aside has three "roommates" and together they all show different ways young girls react to this horrifying situation. Emily Goodwin does an incredible job of describing and explaining how child sex slaves exist in their terrifying reality.

Addie is the strong personality and fights her situation as much as she can. She can handle being hurt for her "disobedience," but she follows the rules when her family and her roommates are threatened. She tries to close herself off as she is being abused, but she never loses hope.

The author shows that males are also bought and abused in this horrific world through Jackson, who was sold by his grandmother as a child to be used and abused over and over again. Addie and Jackson find hope and good within each other and join forces to try to escape their hell.

I recommend this book for readers who are able to handle this material. The author does not approach this subject lightly. Instead, she paints a vivid picture of the depravity of human nature and the evil and likeness that some people are capable of. I didn't get expect Stay to delve this deeply into childhood sex and abuse, but I am glad she did because I have a newfound understanding of what children go through and how some can come to love their abusers, why some don't try harder to escape, why some don't fight their circumstances, and how some can hold on to hope.

I can't say that I enjoyed this book because that just seems wrong. I am grateful, though, for the awareness the author brings to this aspect of our world. Human trafficking, kidnapping, and childhood sex and work slaves do exist. There are evil people in our world who inflict this type of inhumane pain and suffering on innocent children and young adults. It never really seemed real to me in my "happy, everyone loves everyone" world, but I just didn't want to think people around me were actually capable of being such monsters.

I have never read a book like this before, and I know the reality of it will forever haunt me. I pray for those who are living this hell right now to never lose hope and to one day make it back home where they will once again feel safe and loved.

I pray Chelsea Bruck from Maybee, Michigan is found safe and alive, and if she's being forced into this hell, that she holds onto to her strength and faith and her love for her family and friends to help her survive. If you read this and believe in prayer, please say a prayer for Chelsea and her family.

Dark, Intensely Disturbing Brilliance....

Beautiful. Terrible. Riveting. Poignant. Getting it? Yes, STAY, is all of those things and so much more. I really dug this author's Contagious books (Zombie post-apocalyptic fun) and was taken with her writing in those works. I tried this because of the excellent ratings, though the subject matter is very disturbing (never a turn-off, just a caution). After reading STAY, I'm still sticking with Goodwin as being a horror writer. Though this is a love story of sorts, and has the HEA lots of us readers really like, the journey is a raw, brutal and terrifying one and somehow the category of romance doesn't exactly work. The entire genre thing can be somewhat subjective in a mixed work like this one and some might see it differently.

Addie Miller is a college girl spending the day at the parade when she witnesses something she shouldn't have. Addie's torn from her normal life into the underground world of human trafficking, where victims are too young to know their own mind, too beaten, starved, and overworked in the sub-human conditions to even think.

I gulped this down in about four hours. The house could have been on fire. It was that good. STAY felt like a recounting of actual events, not fiction. It was such a real-feeling story (as I read) STAY seemed true. That's just flat-out talent, and Goodwin has it.

Fans of CAPTIVE in the DARK and The DECIMATION of MAE will really like this. STAY is just as dark but somehow, hope is threaded somewhat more surely in this tale and that small granule kept me super-glued to the pages.

Warning: the subject matter in this book is extremely disturbing and must be read with that in mind. The brutality of the sexual interaction does not have an erotic spin to it and comes off as what it is: criminal.

Highly recommend.

Such tragedy that we live in a time where human trafficking exists

Oh man was this book unbelievable. I initially bought this book when it was released mainly because I love all books by Emily Goodwin. Although I was really afraid to read it knowing what the subject matter of the book was about and the fact that it was a dark romance. Human trafficking is such a controversial topic that is prevalent in our world today. I was afraid of the romance part because too many books make the evil guy the one that the main character falls in love with. I loved the fact that the damaged guy received hope from Addy. I initially started the book and didn’t think I would be able to finish reading it cause it was so dark. I hated reading about the abuse that Addy went through but I was so glad that I finished it. I actually really really liked it. The characters were really well developed and you could tell that the author had done some major research when she wrote this book because so many of the thoughts and actions of the captive were so vivid it would give me the chills. There never was a slow moment in this book it was non stop thrill from page one to the last page. This book doesn’t glorify rape, and human trafficking it shows the strength that one endured in the most terrifying part of their entire life. I highly recommend this to any reader that wants something that will make them think and enjoy the life that they live because in a blink of a eye it could all be gone. I purchased this book before it was removed by amazon.

About the Author
Wei-Chau Xie is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environment Engineering and the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. He is the author of Dynamic Stability of Structures and has published numerous journal articles on dynamic stability, structural dynamics and random vibration, nonlinear dynamics and stochastic mechanics, reliability and safety analysis of engineering systems, and seismic analysis and design of engineering structures. He has been teaching differential equations to engineering students for almost twenty years. He received the Teaching Excellence Award in 2001 in recognition of his exemplary record of outstanding teaching, concern for students, and commitment to the development and enrichment of engineering education at Waterloo. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award in 2007, which is the highest formal recognition given by the University of Waterloo for a superior record of continued excellence in teaching.

Necessary and Sufficient

I am a structural engineer that just retired after a 47 year carreer. I have not solved differential equations for years but always thought how important they were to engineers and wanted to revisit them in my retirement. This book is tailored for solving physical problems and does not wander to pursue mathematical oddities. The presentation is very clear and thoughtful and should be of great help and interest for students as well as practising engineers. I recommend highly to all persons interested in the subject.

Oregon has some spectacular geology and for all the rockhounds out there, UO geologist Marli B. Miller's newly updated Roadside Geology of Oregon provides everything you need to know about pulling over on road trips to gawk at feldspar and fossils. The first version of this guide came out in 1978, and a whole lot of awesome geology has taken place since then.
The book is easy to follow, including a plethora of maps and details descriptions of how Oregon's iconic landscapes came into being. For example: Oregon's oldest exposed rocks are 400 million years old, found in central Oregon. And how cool is it that Mount Pisgah is made of "altered 30-million-year-old basaltic lavas"? Marli B. Miller is a senior instructor and researcher in geology at the University of Oregon. She completed a MS and PhD in structural geology in 1987 and 1992, respectively. She teaches a variety of courses, including structural geology, field geology, and geophotography. In addition to numerous technical papers, she is the author of Geology of Death Valley National Park, with coauthor Lauren A. Wright, and the photographer for What s So Great About Granite? Marli has two daughters, Lindsay and Megan.

One of the very best Roadside Geology books

I just finished reading Miller's 2nd edition yesterday and am very pleased with it. I live in Oregon, am not a geologist or scientist, and have taken the 1st edition on many trips, and I expect to take the new edition on many more. It is superior in many ways to the 1978 1st edition (with no disrespect intended to Alt's and Hydmann's first venture into the roadside geology business). I also think it is one of the best written of the 15 or so Roadside Geology books I own.

She has used more modern names for the state regions and has slightly rearranged the order of presentation for the better. She has paid close attention to details, thousands of them. (I wonder what her notebooks look like.) Evidently, she has personally driven most if not all of the roads described in the book, and she seems to have taken most of the photographs herself. (She likes polarizers and deep blue skies!)

What does Miller do that makes her book so good? She seems to have tried to reach a broad range of readers, both those who already are familiar with geological concepts, explanations, and vocabulary, and those who are approaching a geology book for the first time. For example, geologists think of rock formations and accreted terranes the way that novelists and biographers think of people as characters: you've got to give them names and ages and a certain "personality". Then the writer has to refer to dozens of them, but not lose the reader, who may be picking up the book months after reading it the last time. In the 1st edition Alt & Hyndman solved the problem by avoiding formation names and just using descriptions of the rock types in them. Miller bravely uses the actual names of formations and adds succinct reminders most of the time of what the formation contains. It worked for me, and now terms like Siletzia, Columbia River Basalt Group, Tyee, and Clarno all make music for me. Her other science writing skills are very good.

She succeeds in making it much easier to actually locate a site while being a passenger and reading aloud the relevant passage to the driver. She often gives the mileage marker, a great benefit from the Oregon Dept. of Transportation. She often thinks to tell you where the point happens where you pass from one terrane and/or formation to another. She posts actual color photos of interesting sites and points out what to look for in the picture. The books are printed on heavy-weight glossy paper that reproduces color photos very richly and with a lot of detail.

The famous strip maps of the Roadside Geology series are enhanced in her hands. The glossy paper, use of color, and modern printing techniques permit her and the publisher to put much detail into the maps. They are very rich. The material is referenced both by the labels and pointers as well as text descriptions of what is on the roads. As other authors have done, she sometimes refers to a small town that is not on the map, but not too often.

She has included coverage of some minor roads that were not described in the first edition. Two examples are Oregon Rte. 205 branching from US 26 near Portland to Tillamook and OR 205 in the southeast Oregon basin and range region near Steens Mountain.

She includes the big geological stories of Oregon: examples are subduction earthquakes, the clockwise rotation of the coast mountains around a center in southern Washington, the effect of the Missoula ice-age floods on the Columbia River region, and the Basin and Range faulting. Little tidbits are included, too: the folding of the Oregon coast with low center (near Newport, if I recall correctly) and the making of the weird Oxbow on the Snake River and many more.

I think even readers from other states and countries may find this book well worth reading because Oregon has such complexity and Miller has described it so well.

The Roadside Geology Series just keeps getting better and better!

I have been reading the Roadside Geology books (and Geology Underfoot) for at least 20 years, and have copies of all that have been published. I’ve studied the original version of RG Oregon numerous times, and have been waiting for at least the last decade for an updated edition. This has especially been the case since I read Roadside Geology of Idaho, by David Alt, which included his theory that the Columbia Plateau flood basalts and the succession of calderas forming the Snake River plain (of which the Yellowstone volcano is the latest) were both the result of an asteroid strike in southeastern Oregon about 17 million years ago. No mention of that was made in the original version of RG Oregon.

Unfortunately, no mention of that idea was made in this version either, at least not directly. That’s okay, because in all other ways, the 2nd Edition is well worth the money, as well as the time it takes to read it carefully.

Although the theory of an asteroid strike isn’t even mentioned, there is a set of drawings on page 215 that shows the distribution of the major units of the flood basalts, beginning with the Steens Mountain series in southeastern Oregon between 16.8 and 16.6 million years ago. This matches up beautifully with the location of the initial impact crater, especially since it is circular, more or less. It is followed by the Imnaha series, which began in the same area and flowed northeast into Idaho and around the Wallowa mountains to flow west. Above that lie the massive Grand Ronde series, which overlie the Imnaha series and cover the southeastern third of Washington. Not only that, they flowed west all the way to the Pacific and caused some interesting land forms and features there. Not once, but many times. At the same time, the less extensive Prineville and Picture Gorge series added to the volume of flood basalt in north central Oregon. As if that weren’t bad enough, the Wanapum series (also referred to as the Yakima basalts in the original versions of RG Oregon and Washington) flowed over much of the Grand Ronde basalts in Washington and northern Oregon, again all the way to the Pacific. Finally, as a kind of sputtering last gasp, the Saddle Mountains series covered areas of the Wanapum series in southeastern Washington and northern Oregon as well.

In all, we’re talking a total volume of around 52,800 cubic miles, covering an area of more than 77,220 square miles. Some single flows had volumes greater than 480 cubic miles. Clearly the Columbia Plateau Basalts are the North American equivalent of the Siberian Traps that may have contributed to the Permian-Triassic extinction (also known as The Great Dying), and the Deccan Traps in India that may have contributed to the Cretaceous Extinction (along with whatever hit Chixulub).

The other interesting fact mentioned in this edition that didn’t get mentioned in the first is the existence of McDermitt Caldera (pg. 234 map) as the oldest of the Yellowstone Hot Spot calderas. It is within the Steens Mountain area. For more on the theory, read Roadside Geology of Idaho.

Why am I so interested in the Columbia Plateau basalts? I grew up in Richland, Washington, and traveled around that part of Washington and Oregon. In some sense, my fascination with geology rises out of my childhood curiosity about what might cause flood basalts.

But there is much more to like about the 2nd Edition of RG Oregon, including all the color photos, the carefully drawn geological maps, the updated application of plate tectonics theory to how Oregon grew through the addition of terranes accreted from elsewhere as the North American Continent has expanded westward since the North Atlantic began to open back during the Triassic Period, and the fact that Oregon appears to have been rotated clockwise about 70 degrees since the first terranes were accreted probably beginning around 100 million years ago or more. Also of value is the discussion of the Missoula Floods during the last Ice Age. These caused the Channeled Scablands in Eastern Washington, left huge sandbars in places you’d never expect them up and down the Columbia River, and large rocks in the Willamette Valley that could only have come from Montana or Alberta Canada. You can read all about them in “Glacial Lake Missoula and Its Humongous Floods,” also by David Alt.

For anyone with an interest in the geology underlying the scenery you see out your car windows when you drive around this great nation of ours, I highly recommend the Roadside Geology series, as well as the Geology Underfoot series by Mountain Press. And I encourage the editors at Mountain Press to update more of their books, especially Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas (and any of the others that haven’t been upgraded to full color).

I can hardly wait till there’s a Roadside Geology book for every state in the union because reading them is almost as good as visiting those states for those as can’t, and greatly increases the enjoyment of visiting by providing an understanding of how the land forms beyond your car windows came to be the way they are.

Worthy and much needed successor

For years I have been hoping for an updated Roadside Geology guide to Oregon. This book lives up to my expectations and is worth purchasing even if you already have the old version. That first edition, by Alt & Hyndman, is nearly 40 years old now. It was the very first Roadside book, I think, and they deserve plenty of credit for kicking off the genre. Since then, however, the science has advanced a lot, as has book printing technology, and so has the Roadside series. Alt and Hyndman went pretty easy and light on details, but experience has shown the publishers that people actually do want more. The recent guide to Massachusetts, for example, is much longer than the Oregon book, despite MA being a tiny state and less rich in geological wonders.

The new guide by Miller lives up to the current standard for the series. It probably has twice the word count of the A&H book (more pages, and less white space), covers several roads they left out (e.g., OR218 through the interesting Clarno/John Day region) lots of detailed, color geological maps using standard formation names, as well as helpful color photos, including a bunch of aerial shots that give context to what you'll see from the road. Reflects the state of the science today. In some areas that just means details have been fleshed out. The big story, though, is the understanding we now have of terrane accretion -- how much of Oregon was assembled over the last 200M years from chunks of land that plate tectonics brought in from faraway places.

A very minor gripe is that I wish Miller had given a nod to Alt and Hyndman somewhere, such as the acknowledgements section. True, her book not an 'update', she clearly wrote from a clean slate, but it still would have been gracious to do so.

Another great series addition

This book takes on a new slant in the Supernatural Bonds' series in that this one introduces a demon who happens to have the ability (and need) to change between the sexes.

Since I do not like writing reviews that give away the story, I will simply say that the human male in this story, the other part of the equation, happens to be 100% alpha male himself. From there, that gives you a good clue as to where this story possibly goes. Of course there is always the villains that are written in her stories as well, the agonist to the antagonist well balanced, leaving you with a desire to keep reading to see who will succeed and who will succumb.

I have, thus far, enjoyed this entire series (this is Book 7) and I am starting Book 8, Dragon Games next. I usually recommend that people start at the beginning of a series, but in this series I would highly recommend that you do. The characters are linked from story to story, reappearing in the books as you go, so to get a true picture of this universe that Jory Strong has created start at Book 1. If that is not an option for yo this can certainly be read as a stand-alone.

I enjoy the fact that Jory has an actual story as the foundation of her books in this series, rather than reading from one sex scene to the next. The combination allows for a good story experience that is, at times, extremely visual and stimulating at the same time.

The Duality of Succubi and Incubi

The story is, at least to me, a fascinating one. It is the duality of what Succubi and Incubi are in one interpretation, that being a single being that can take both female and male forms and switch between the two of them at will... That's something that hasn't been written about very much and is a refreshing change of story ideas to me.

Miguel is a police detective in a world where supernatural beings exist side by side with humanity. They look like humans, they have jobs and lives much like humans, but they also have to deal with their supernatural abilities which can make things interesting at the least and troublesome in the extreme. His friends are supernatural or supernatural/human mixes, though he is not fully aware of all that goes on around him until he becomes involved with Ianthe.

Ianthe is a Succubus. She has been in this world before and forced into doing some evil things by her master at that time, but she has broken free and Miguel accidentally summons her. It turns out that only he could have because of the needs he has within him and what Ianthe is.

Ianthe is both male and female. Incubus and Succubus. And she is exactly what Miguel needs in order to find happiness in his life. Tat realization takes some time and Ianthe and her male form Ian make things more complicated. Miguel's friends also doubt Ianthe's promise that she does not want to hurt him and that makes things more complicated still, though eventually she does find friends and defenders that if not support her, at least understand her.

There are male/male and male/female sexual situations of course, but they are not the point of the story. Of course they are hot and need to be there to move the story along, but the story is not one sex scene after the next.

It is a thoughtful exploration of what it means to know oneself. Who you are, what you are, and why you are.

That's cryptic, but needs to be as the story is so focused on that theme that revealing more of it would be doing a disservice to the work...

I give it four and a half pitchforks out of five.

The one thing that I miss in the work is that Ianthe in both forms has no horns or tail. That's not much to be disappointed in, and really other than that the work is enthralling, well written and I think well worth reading for anyone that wants to see another view of Succubi and Incubi that isn't what you would expect...

Fascinating read

The idea of an incubus and succubus as the same being is not one I'd read about before, so that was new and intriguing. Demon Familiar is part of the Supernatural Bonds series and I was glad Miguel finally got his story. It's erotica, so there's a lot of sex, and there is some m/m sex, so if that's not your thing, then you probably wouldn't like this story. That said, Ianthe and Miguel together are explosive and I really enjoyed their story.
